Champions League fantasy match day 3 – our UCL pundit Akis Goulioumis searches for the weakest links

Hi everyone,

As you all know, in the group stages format the same teams will face each other during matchdays 3 & 4. This is very important information for all fantasy players in the sense that can easily plan their strategy going forward.

What is more important for me is to identify the group stages’ “weakest links” and invest on their opponents hoping that they can… hammer them, even if this would require taking some “cost effective” hits.

champions League fantasy match day 3

Irrespective to their disappointing performance/points gained so far, I will not consider Leipzig, Feyenoord and Benfica as “weakest links”. Feyenoord are facing Shakhtar who are not in so great form, whilst Benfica and Leipzig are definitely not so bad teams as their points/performance suggest so far.

On the other hand, Qarabag, APOEL, Maribor, Olympiacos and Anderlecht can all be… beaten for good taken their opponents quality.

Qarabag-Atletico Madrid

Atletico are desperate to gain 6 points against Qarabag since their defeat at home from Chelsea has put their qualification at risk. I cannot see how Qarabag will score against Atletico’s defense. An Atletico Madrid starter-defender seems a must for the following 2 matchdays.

Anderlecht-Paris SG

Paris SG have scored 29 in goals in Ligue1 and 8 in the CL. Anderlecht have conceded 6 goals and scored none in the CL. I believe that selecting from Paris SG attack and defense are obvious choices. The only drawback is that Paris SG are going to qualify for sure, but it does not seem that Emery will be rotating players so early in the group stages. Don’t forget that the 1st place in the group does count for future draws.

Maribor-Liverpool

Maribor is not a quality team but you can never be sure with Liverpool. It appears that Liverpool has the potential to score many goals against the Slovenians, gain 6 points and, more or less, secure a place in the 16 of the Champions League. I am not sure though if it worth to spend a forward position for a Liverpool attacker instead of the likes of a Messi, a Neymar, an Aubameyang – but it feels like an attacking midfielder could do the job (Coutinho let’s say).

APOEL-Borussia Dortmund

The most obvious choice for me comes from this pair. Borussia has 0 points and needs only 6 points so that can qualify from a very hard group. APOEL are low quality and certainly

cannot compete against teams like Real, Spurs or Dortmund. Aubameyang is a must choice for me! I am not sure about picking a defender from Borussia. Like Liverpool they can concede goals by almost every team.

Olympiacos-Barcelona

Olympiacos are not in great form and seem to have huge problems in defence. Their new coach has adopted more defensive approaches and he is already planning to use formations with 3 defenders. Despite that, Olympiacos will have difficult times in dealing with Barca’s attacking options. Messi remains an excellent choice and he is in top form. I believe Barca will not concede a goal in Nou Camp, but I cannot say the same for the game at Piraeus – a traditionally hostile ground for most of European giants.

In conclusion, I think that the two following matchdays are very crucial for the UCL fantasy and it worth taking a risk with some hits with a hope that the above fixtures analysis will play vital role to score big numbers.

P.S Of course, Lewandowski remains a first class choice with Celtic at home. I am going to have him in my team and change him for Neymar in match-day 4. For those interested I will tweet my team tomorrow, but I am planning for a high-risk 12pts hit bringing Lewa, Aubameyang, Henderson and an Atletico starting defender instead of CR7, Dybala, Ganso and Zappacosta.

Good luck to all of you!!
