fantasy football – “meet the FFGeeks” Jako from Australia

Fantasy Premier League

I’ve neglected the “meet the FFGeeks” series recently and I have to apologise to the latest contributor Jako from South Australia who sent me his contribution a while ago but I haven’t posted it until now.  If you haven’t seen it before this is where we find out a bit about the regular visitors and commenters on the site.  Not only their FPL strategy but a bit about their lives outside FPL

I see you’ve been coming on the site recently. Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi, my name is Peter, I’m 51 and live about 50 kilometres outside of Adelaide, South Australia on a small acreage, with my wife and teenage daughter.
I enjoy most sports, having played Australian Rules Football for years when I was younger, along with tennis and baseball during our summer, and also indoor cricket at nights for many seasons.
I also closely follow NFL Football, our local motor racing, formula one, and have an interest in land based fishing (as opposed to boat fishing).

How long have you been playing FPL and what is your motivation

My Fantasy Premier League career began in the 2013/2014 season, after agreeing to enter a team in a league being set up by an ‘internet friend’ who I met on an Australian Stock Market message board site, which I frequent regularly.
Prior to this I had only the most basic knowledge of international football, the English Premier League and its associated players, and had not watched any matches whatsoever, and didn’t know any of the players at all.
I did however have some fantasy experience, having played Australian Rules Football Fantasy for many seasons, and Australian Rugby League Fantasy for a couple of years.
There is no doubt after learning of my lack of experience, my internet friends expected me to come last in their league for sure.
My initial strategy was just to become competitive and not be an easy beat, so I attempted to identify which players were ‘fantasy relevant’, and concentrated on doing research on them in particular, to assemble a reasonable team.
Sadly, It has taken me a couple of seasons to reasonably understand most of the rules, and how best to take advantage of them, as the rules are quite different from the fantasy games I had experience in.
In my first two seasons I did not watch any matches at all, and just read internet reports on the most fantasy relevant players, which amused my internet friends no end, as I could comment on players, but did not even know what they looked like, their style of play, or any of their previous history.
This season however, I have streamed a few matches via the internet, when I have had multiple players in the first match of the game week, and the start time was suitable (In my state of Australia, games start at 11:15 at night, for a 12:45pm local time kickoff).
So while my results have not been particularly spectacular overall, I have remained reasonably competitive in my league, which was my main goal……and have not come last at all.

I only found the fantasyfootballgeek site this season, and have been quite impressed with the research, and have enjoyed reading the different articles.

Lets take a look at your team and your rank history?

How have you been doing this season

This season has been quite tricky (by all accounts) compared to past seasons, I am again doing OK in my leagues, having been in the top four for most of this season, and about 50 points below the top placed player.

Your best ever fantasy moment

Perhaps the best moment in my brief EPL Fantasy history, was the first time I scored over 100 points in my first season.

Thanks very much Jako and good luck for the rest of the season
