Fantasy Premier League, Player Rankings

The cheap rotations

Here are some options for cheap defenders who rotate home and away so as much as possible you always have a defender playing at home where most of the clean sheets occur.

Sunderland and Newcastle:  Van Aanholt (£4.5m) and Coloccini (£4.5m)  plus GK Mannone (£4.5m) and GK Krul (£4.5m)

The Sunderland defence I think will be one of the more successful budget defences and due to policing reasons they rotate perfectly.  I had gone for O’Shea but Van Aanholt looked impressive bombing up and down the left flank.  Mannone looks to have won the battle for the GK spot and this is the GK option that works well at £4.5m each

Newcastle and Sunderland had 6 clean sheets each last season

Next 10 fixtures:  Villa A, Palace H, Spurs H, Hull A, Swansea H, Stoke H, Leicester H, Spurs A, Palace A, Everton H

Stoke and Swansea:  Wilson (£4.5m) and N Taylor (£4.5m)   plus GK Begovic (£5.0m) and GK Fabianski (£4.5m)

Stoke was hardly impressive in their first defensive performance at home to a fairly toothless Villa team but they do have a record of clean sheets at home.  Wilson has kept out Huth and looks good value if he can hold it.  Otherwise its £5.0m Bardsley as the best pick.

Stoke had 7 home clean sheets and Swansea 6 home clean sheets last season

Next 10 fixtures:  Burnley H, WBA H, Leicester H, Southampton H, Newcastle H, Newcastle H, Swansea H, Leicester H, West Ham H, Arsenal H

Palace and QPR:  Ward (£5.0m) and Ferdinand (£4.5m) plus GK Speroni (£5.0m)  and GK  Green (£4.5m)

The Palace defence held up pretty well against the Arsenal defence apart from a couple of set pieces.  Maybe some of the Pulis magic remains.  MacKay is quite a defensive minded coach so that should help as well.  Good first fixtures.  QPR were not that impressive though but are good value and in theory should be better given the players available.

Palace had 8 home clean sheets last season. QPR had 10 in the Championship

Next 10 fixtures:  West Ham H, Sunderland H, Burnley H, Stoke H, Leicester H, Hull A, Chelsea A, Villa H, Sunderland H, Man City H

Burnley and Hull:  Duff (£4.0m) and Chester (£4.5m)  plus GK Heaton £4.5m and GK McGregor (£5.0m)

Hull despite the great clean sheet were under the kosh for long periods and Burnley were ripped apart by Chelsea but for Burnley, thats not representative of the coming opposition.  Good fixtures and Hull at home are the main attractions.  Good fixtures

Burnley had 11 Championship home clean sheets last season. Hull had 8 home clean sheets

Next 10 fixtures:  Stoke H, Villa A, West Ham H, Sunderland H, WBA A, Palace H, West Ham H, Everton H, Southampton H, Hull H

Aston Villa and WBA:  Vlaar (£4.5m) and Pocognoli (£4.5m)  plus GK Guzan (£4.5m) and GK Foster (£4.5m)

I’m not a big fan of either defence but they definitely are cheap.  Good start by Villa but I’ll be surprised if it lasts.  They also rotate perfectly due to policing reasons

Aston Villa and WBA both had 4 clean sheets last season

Next 10 fixtures:  Newcastle H, Hull H, Everton H, Arsenal H, Burnley H, Man City H, Man Utd H, C Palace H, Spurs H, Newcastle H

The Bargain Basement £4.0m defenders

The £4.0m players can be fillers on your bench especially if you are playing 2 elite defenders and then one rotation.  The £4.0m option becomes a cheap filler

Here are the options:

Bruce – Hull

Hull should pick up clean sheets at home but Bruce will only play in 3-5-2 and it’s hard to assess yet whether the manager will play 3-5-2 at home to some of the lower placed sides.  Is an injury doubt.

Moore –  Leicester

Hard to assess what their capability is at the moment after a tough game home to Everton.  Moore is a young CB who scored once in 30 Championship games last season so he’s not going to give you any attacking points.  Looks a good gametime play though

Hutton – Aston Villa

Back from the cold to play RB.  With Lowton and Bacuna at the club who can play RB though he has competition.

Those £4.0m  who have doubts:

Wisdom – Started at the weekend but has RB Gamboa in the background who could easily take his place

Dummett – Surprisingly started after playing second fiddle to Haidara in preseason.  Needs some monitoring before any security can be put to it.

Roberge – Should lose his place to £4.5m Vergini soon when he’s fit after Vergini’s impressive preseason
