fantasy premier league best midfielders – GW18 “ones to watch”

Fantasy Premier League, Player Rankings

Here’s’s our fantasy premier league best midfielders gameweek 18 article where we outline the best mids for the gameweek and beyond.  There’s a table of stats with a key underneath which gives enough information to help you make a choice over which midfielder you may want to transfer although I have notionally ranked them based on their stats.   It’s important though to read the narrative with the next 6 fixtures coming up as this is where I highlight their prospects and cautionary factors to bring your own subjectivity into it plus some comparison to other options in their teams in some cases.

Fixt ease:  The ease of attacking fixtures coming up.  Next 6/next 3

Undlyg stats rank:  I’ve ranked the players according to their underlying shooting and creating chances stats

Leaders in key stats

Minutes per FPL point

  1. Mahrez
  2. Ozil
  3. De Bruyne
  4. Walcott
  5. Deulofeu

Consistency

  1. Ozil
  2. Mahrez
  3. Eriksen
  4. Deulofeu
  5. YYT

Underlying stats

  1. Walcott
  2. Ozil
  3. De Bruyne
  4. Coutinho
  5. Mahrez

Fixtures

  1. Liverpool – Coutinho
  2. Man City – KDB, YYT
  3. Spurs – Eriksen
  4. Arsenal – Ozil, Ramsey, Walcott

So only Ozil in all 4 categories.  Mahrez, KDB and Walcott are in 3.   Deulofeu, Eriksen and YYT are in 2.  Ramsey is in 1

Ozil

Only ahead of the mind boggling Mahrez due to the better fixtures.  Mr Consistency has actually returned a goal or assist in his last 11 games.   Interestingly only Mahrez has a better 10+% than Ozil which is surprising given that he’s a mainly assist based player.  The returns are no fluke either.  Has the best creating chances stats of any premier league player.  If there is a shadow it’s the lack of shooting stats which is reflected in only 2 goals.  Has strong set piece representation

Bournemouth (H)
Newcastle (H)
Liverpool (A)
Stoke (A)
Chelsea (H)

Mahrez

I used the word mind boggling before and the stats definitely are.  How can anyone have a minutes per FPL point of 8.8 and a 10+ FPL points % of 56.  Thats just ridiculous and totally unheard of.  The underlying stats also back this up.  Also has pens and the leagues best penalty provider in Jamie Vardy.  Fixtures are going to be the test

Liverpool (A)
Man City (H)
Bournemouth (H)
Spurs (A)
Aston Villa (A)
Stoke (H)

De Bruyne

I’m a little sceptical about De Bruyne.  He’s like a lite version of Ozil without the CAM position (he seems consigned to the right flank) without the returns and for more cash? Still the stats actually match up reasonably well against the rest of the midfielders in the league.  Whether a midfielder show have a consistency rate of less than 50% at his price is another question especially as a mainly assist based player.  However home to Sunderland is the time to buy if you want him and not the time to sell although it’s possible he could be rotated given some articles recently and his newness to the lack of winter break

Sunderland (H)
Leicester (A)
Watford (A)
Everton (H)
Crystal Palace (H)
West Ham (A)

Walcott

Has got some good stats on limited gametime although they have been partly with his striker job share with Giroud.  If gametime security and 90 minutes is and a sound injury record is essential as an FPL player for you then he’s not your choice. Also yet to get a single bonus point despite 3 goals and 3 assists?  He has been a consistent performer over the seasons though.  However so has Hazard??  Sanchez returning could give some gametime issues but with Cazorla out and Ramsey central it does leave the right flank his to own.

Southampton (A)
Bournemouth (H)
Newcastle (H)
Liverpool (A)
Stoke (A)
Chelsea (H)

Eriksen

A bit of a bizzare one this.  Last season he had no consistency but a load of big 10+ returns.  This season he seems to be the opposite.  Good consistency but not much in the way of big returns.  Has got very good set piece representation and good fixtures coming.  The left flank position and lack of underlying stats are the negatives.  The Spurs alternative is £5.2m cheapie Delle Alli who’s currently in the favoured CAM position.  He has better recent form  but questionable how long he will hold the position as he was originally a Dembele replacement.

Norwich (H)
Watford (A)
Everton (A)
Leicester (H)
Sunderland (H)
Crystal Palace (A)

Deulofeu

Another interesting one this.  Has better consistency and return stats than Barkley.  Barkley though has far more ownership complications and as you may have felt last week will hurt you when he returns.  Barkley also is a more reliable 90 minute player and does have the position advantage of CAM over Deulofeus RWM.  Neither have any underlying stats to write home about.  Barkley is the safer choice.  Ive gone for Deulofeu for stats.

Newcastle (A)
Stoke (H)
Spurs (H)
Man City (A)
Chelsea (A)
Swansea (H)

Coutinho

Probably the most reliable player for a Liverpool team with good fixtures especially the next 3 but stuttering horribly.  Good returns over the season and in the last 4 however anytime you’re looking at someone with a consistency return rate of 36 % and a 10 + FPL points close to that of 21% then you know you’re in for a roller coaster.  Does have very good underlying shooting stats though which is something to hold onto

Leicester (H)
Sunderland (A)
West Ham (A)
Arsenal (H)
Man Utd (H)
Norwich (A)

Yaya Toure

Surprised me that he made the cut but actually the consistency rate compares well to others although the overall returns aren’t fantastic.  Also plays in a deeper position than you would naturally like.  Did show what he could do in the last 20 minutes of the Arsenal game.  Good fixtures and consistency but no underlying stats and overall returns could be better.  Will have pens when Aguero is injured or off the field which  so far this season has been over half the available minutes.

Sunderland (H)
Leicester (A)
Watford (A)
Everton (H)
Crystal Palace (H)
West Ham (A)

Ramsey

Made the cut based on his recent form when moved back to his favoured CM position and has really shown his box to box potential with 2 goals and an assist in his last 3.  Although to be balanced the returning games were Sunderland and Villa.  Should have good gametime security and proven in the position with good fixtures.  Cazorla is a long time away from being back to take over the position again. Has very good shooting stats.   A huge bandwagon at the moment.  It depends on how much you believe the new position will return for him

Southampton (A)
Bournemouth (H)
Newcastle (H)
Liverpool (A)
Stoke (A)
Chelsea (H)
