Fantasy premier league best midfielders GW2 – “ones to watch”

It’s very early on in the season and it’s difficult to follow a pattern based on the very limited stats that have been produced.  So at this stage it’s harder to rank the players than it will be in 5 or 6 games. However we have notionally ranked them but there’s enough information for you to make your own decision.  I’ve decided to keep the number of players to 10.  That does tend to mean that the players are at the higher value end.  However I have this week also written a budget midfielders article if you are looking for players in the £5.0m to £6.0m range

Here’s the table of stats with a key underneath:

fpl...gw2Ones2W

Key:

FPL pts pm: The minutes it takes a player to take earn an FPL point. The lower the better
Consistency: the % of games that a player gets a goal or assist
10+ pts %: the percentage of games that the players has got 10 or more points
Mins per G/A: The amount of minutes played it takes to get a goal or assist
Fixt ease 6/3: The teams rank of fixtures in terms of easiness over the next 6 and 3 fixtures
16/17 pts: The FPL points so far this season

Hazard

Home to West Ham was like a visit back to 14/15 season for the Chelsea LAM as he continued his good end to last season and form in the Euros.  No European football is also a massive bonus to keeping him fresh.  Also appears to be back on penalties.  The fact that he was up against an RB in Antonio who isn’t a RB at all and struggles positionally is probably the only warning.  The next 3 fixtures could hardly be much better.

Next 6 fixtures

Watford (A)
Burnley (H)
Swansea (A)
Liverpool (H)
Arsenal (A)
Hull (A)

Payet

There was a significant change to the positive when Payet came on against Chelsea.  Has all set pieces and his spectacular form of last season and in the Euro’s looks to have come with him.  The Europa League is the unfortunate distraction.  Bilic may feel forced to play him such is his importance to the side. Should be ready to start against Bournemouth which is an excellent fixture.

Bournemouth (H)
Man City (A)
Watford (H)
West Brom (A)
Southampton (H)
Middlesbrough (H)

Mahrez

If the constant transfer speculation was supposed to affect his form it wasn’t apparent in the opening game at Hull despite Leicester losing.  He was excellent and one of the few players who looked to be able to deal with having the ball rather than counter attacking.  Like Hazard looks to have regained penalties.  Fixtures could be better but Leicester may actually prefer teams who attack them

Arsenal (H)
Swansea (H)
Liverpool (A)
Burnley (H)
Man Utd (A)
Southampton (H)

De Bruyne

Hard to really know how the midfield will work with Guardiola at the helm given it’s early days but De Bruyne based on last year seems the natural pick. He certainly was heavily involved against Sunderland and despite no return was a promising attacking performance.

Stoke (A)
West Ham (H)
Man Utd (A)
Bournemouth (H)
Swansea (A)
Spurs (A)

Firmino

I’ve stuck with him despite him being the only midfielder who didn’t return a goal or assist against Arsenal.  It certainly wasn’t for lack of chances and he has to be rated as unlucky.  Certainly had the best returns of the 3 attacking midfielders of last season and may also keep the striking spot due to his pressing ability.  Good fixture next.

Burnley (A)
Spurs (A)
Leicester (H)
Chelsea (A)
Hull (H)
Swansea (A)

Eriksen

I’ve stuck with the Spurs midfielder despite thinking he was a little disappointing against Everton.  He showed little ambition to get into the box which was a negative compared to Lamela.  While he had a lot of involvement in the Spurs attack his output was less than it should have been.  However he does have the majority of set pieces which is a plus and last year was a consistent performer.

 Crystal Palace (H)
Liverpool (H)
Stoke (A)
Sunderland (H)
Middlesbrough (A)
Man City (H)

Sanchez

Like Firmino it was quite incredible he didn’t return a goal or assist in the game against Liverpool despite playing striker.  He’s a  bit of a streaky scorer and it was a disturbingly quiet performance in that game with little attacking output.  However there’s no doubting his quality and that he will still be a major attacking force in the premier league.  Mixed fixtures.

Leicester (A)
Watford (A)
Southampton (H)
Hull (A)
Chelsea (H)
Burnley (A)

Barkley

A disappointing season in 15/16.  However a goal, set pieces and a very promising attacking performance for the Everton CAM against a strong defensive team was certainly a good sign for the future given the good fixtures ahead

West Brom (A)
Stoke (H)
Sunderland (A)
Middlesbrough (H)
Bournemouth (A)
Crystal Palace (H)

Willian

The man with a decent share of set piece responsibility for Chelsea drew a blank but it was a positive attacking performance from the Chelsea midfielder.  Good fixtures coming up with no European distractions

Watford (A)
Burnley (H)
Swansea (A)
Liverpool (H)
Arsenal (A)
Hull (A)

Townsend

The Palace attacking midfielder carried on his Spurs and Newcastle shoot on sight policy to Palace and although there were no returns it was certainly a promising start.  Good fixtures to come after Spurs next week

Spurs (A)
Bournemouth (H)
Middlesbrough (A)
Stoke (H)
Sunderland (A)
Everton (A)
