The midfield is an interesting area at the moment dominated by a number of high ownership players.  You can see that they also dominate the squads of the top FPL managers I follow.  Here’s the latest ramkings with alot of stats though to help you make your own view.  There’s also a key to the table and narrative plus the next 6 fixtures.  Also there’s a short section on cheap fillers for your 5th midfielder

Sterling

After coming so close to winning the league last year it’s a real eye opener that suddenly a 19 year old is carrying the club.  Did so again at QPR.  No Sturridge either at the moment to help.  However he still seems to be holding his form and the fixtures are good.  Still has the best overall underlying stats.  Too good to risk with 52% ownership

Hull (H)
Newcastle (A)
Chelsea (H)
Crystal Palace (A)
Stoke (H)
Leicester (A)

Chadli

Didn’t really perform against Man City but if you’re ever going to take the plunge with Chadli GW9 is the time to do it home to Newcastle.  Has performed reasonably consistently and has excellent shooting stats as well as playing in an advanced position.  The best shooting stats of any midfielder

Newcastle (H)
Aston Villa (A)
Stoke (H)
Hull (A)
Everton (H)
Chelsea (A)

Fabregas

The most consistent of the midfielders.  Despite a relatively deep starting position has kept grinding out the points.  Got his first goal against Palace but although has great creating chances stats doesn’t really have great shooting stats.  However while part of a great attacking team with some good fixtures and 53% ownership he’s a risky player to ignore

Man Utd (A)
QPR (H)
Liverpool (A)
West Brom (H)
Sunderland (A)
Spurs (H)

Di Maria

Went off against WBA with a thigh injury and it won’t be until the Friday press conference that we find out if he will be fit for GW9.  Has been sensational since joining Man Utd even though notionally starts deep. Historically is more of an assist based player rather than someone who scores but still got 3 goals in 6 games and has excellent shooting stats.  Now the fixtures get tricky and will be the real test.  Has the majority of set pieces.

Chelsea (H)
Man City (A)
Crystal Palace (H)
Arsenal (A)
Hull (H)
Stoke (H)

Sanchez

Sensational against Hull with a goal and an assist as well as sensational last night in the win against Anderlecht.  Really looking the part at the moment.  Reasonably good fixtures as well.  In overall shooting and creating chances underlying stats only Di Maria and Sterling are better.  Has a good share of set pieces and direct free kicks.

Sunderland (A)
Burnley (H)
Swansea (A)
Man Utd (H)
West Brom (A)
Southampton (H)

Hazard

Has really had a mixed season with some great games and then some invisible ones.  This isn’t difefrent than last year except this year so far the big scores just haven’t come. He also has nothing like last years underlying stats.  Still you just can’t argue with the quality which will always be there and seems to still have the gametime security from Mourinho.  Has pens.

Man Utd (A)
QPR (H)
Liverpool (A)
West Brom (H)
Sunderland (A)
Spurs (H)

Tadic

There’s not much you can say about a 23 point haul apart from wow.  Has very good underlying stats but not really underlying stats  at the top class level.  Still really good next 4 fixtures so still has the chance to perform.  Should  have pens.

Stoke (H)
Hull (A)
Leicester (H)
Aston Villa (A)
Man City (H)
Arsenal (A)

Eriksen

Good performance and goal against Man City and the main set piece taker now has some good fixtures.

Newcastle (H)
Aston Villa (A)
Stoke (H)
Hull (A)
Everton (H)
Chelsea (A)

Siggy

Blanked against Stoke despite 1 really good scoring opportunity.  Not great underlying stats but the ownership is the reason to hold plus the ability to get big scores

Leicester (H)
Everton (A)
Arsenal (H)
Man City (A)
Crystal Palace (H)
QPR (H)

Barkley

Started his first game last week with an assist and an impressive performance.  Also started against Lille but was subbed with an eye injury.  Playing 2 games may mean he could start from the bench.  However it’s a gametime and fixture gamble around his central attacking positioning and his good relationship with Lukaku

Burnley (A)
Swansea (H)
Sunderland (A)
West Ham (H)
Spurs (A)
Hull (H)

The Cheap fillers

Boyd, Burnley £4.4m – Probably the most reliable gametime wise of the cheap fillers

Obertan,  Newcastle £4.4m – Started the last 2 after being isolated and has returned in both games.

Davis Southampton £4.8m – More expensive.  Has reasonable gametime security and attacking threat.  Started 7/8.
