This is the 3rd player rankings article and an update on the pre-season version for the new data received.  Here’s links to the 2 other player rankings articles just completed:

Midfielders at £7.0m and above

Firstly there’s a table of stats. Then there’s a bit of brief commentary on each player. Apart from £4.5m cheapie Tom Carroll, I’ve only included players with good fixtures and good gametime prospects.  At the end there is a group of players I’ve mentioned where the fixtures aren’t as good.

Fixt Ease: The ease of the mentioned fixture range from an attacking perspective. See our GW1 fixture ease article

Mins per FPL pt: How long it took to earn an FPL point in 16/17. The lower the better

Mins per G/A: the amount of time it took to get a goal or assist in 16/17

SOT per 90: The shots on target per 90 minutes from 16/17. Info from

ATGS odds:  The anytime goal scorer odds for the player GW1 from 1 bookies

I’ve ranked the players in the order that I see them. However there’s enough info for you to make an assessment. Remember if they’re not on the table they could well be in the additional non good fixture list below

*stats from the Championship

Great fixtures and he should have good set piece representation in the Southampton team as well as playing in an attacking midfield role. It’s just a case of promising so much and delivering so little that has to make every FPL manager wary. This is a fixture and not a form play

First 6 fixtures:

Swansea (H)
West Ham (H)
Huddersfield (A)
Watford (H)
Crystal Palace (A)
Man Utd (H)

The WBA right winger who has some set piece responsibility had a massive purple patch followed by a patch where he couldn’t hit a barn door. Again good fixtures dictates this pick rather than any consistent form.

First 6 fixtures:

Bournemouth (H)
Burnley (A)
Stoke (H)
Brighton (A)
West Ham (H)
Arsenal (A)

It’s difficult to assess whether players will provide returns after being in the Championship. It’s usually best to wait and see how they perform. However Ritchie took the vast majority of penalties last season, has a good amount of set piece responsibility and good fixtures to start. If you’re going to roll the dice then that’s a pretty good combination.

First 6 fixtures:

Spurs (H)
Huddersfield (A)
West Ham (H)
Swansea (A)
Stoke (H)
Brighton (A)

Nathan Redmond is a pick based on the fixtures and the amount of shots he got in the box last season. It’s a big fixture rather than form gamble. Out of 83 shots last season (57 which were in the penalty area) he scored 7 goals. An 8% conversion rate which is just plain terrible. Over the last 3 seasons he has managed the unique feat of increasing his shots in the box at an excellent rate while halving his conversion rate. Going with Redmond is based on the theory of surely the tide has to turn at some stage. If there was ever a time to believe this it’s now with these fixtures.  Has returned from the Euro U21 competition late and only started the last pre-season game.  That makes him a risk but was also a good sign that he started.

First 6 fixtures:

Swansea (H)
West Ham (H)
Huddersfield (A)
Watford (H)
Crystal Palace (A)
Man Utd (H)

Ince has joined Huddersfield after a successful season with Derby last season. He posted very good actual and underlying stats. Whether he can translate this to the premier league in a team that really could seriously struggle remains to be seen but he has the basic material to do so. He looks like he’ll be  forced to play on the left rather than his preferred right due to the existing relationship between RW Kachunga and RB Smith.  Good pre-season with 4 goals

First 6 fixtures:

Crystal Palace (A)
Newcastle (H)
Southampton (H)
West Ham (A)
Leicester (H)
Burnley (A)

 Ward Prowse

Another player back from the Euro U21 competition who started just the last pre-season game.  Has some set piece representation and an excellent delivery.  The signing of Lamina must cast some doubt on his selection although my initial view is that Davis will be more vulnerable to the new CM/DM

First 6 fixtures:

Swansea (H)
West Ham (H)
Huddersfield (A)
Watford (H)
Crystal Palace (A)
Man Utd (H)

Carroll is on this list as the £4.5m 5th midfielder with the most attacking potential on the current information. He also started 16 of the last 17 games last season which is important for a 5th midfielder. Has potential to do better if gets some set pieces should Sigurdsson leave. However the main attraction seems to be gametime security and the fact that he’s possibly the only £4.5m defender who’s not a DM

First 6 fixtures

Southampton (A)
Man Utd (H)
Crystal Palace (A)
Newcastle (H)
Spurs (A)
Watford (H)

 Other Options

Here’s a few other players without the good fixtures who seem to have some sort of gametime security:

 Shaqiri £6.0m Stoke

Albrighton £5.5m Leicester

Fraser£5.5m Bournemouth

Gross £5.5m Brighton

Pereya £6.0m Watford

Walters £5.5m Burnley

Also a mention to Lokilo a £4.5m Midfielder for Palace who’s started the last 2 pre-season games as an advanced mid.

Chalobah of Watford is another CM who seems secure.

 Not included

Capoue –  due to suspected fall out with coach

Townsend – has now become an RWB

Milivojevic and Loftus Cheek – the former as has been playing CB in pre-season.  The latter through gametime worries.

Anyone have any advice for my starting XI?
    Davies, Daniels, Dawson, Cedric
    Carroll, Salah, De Bruyne
    Kane, Lukaku, Jesus

    • Aaron

      my only comments are:
      – lacking some United coverage at the back (as they have some great fixtures over the first 6 weeks)
      – the double up on WBA defensive options is a bit of a risk IMO
      – you seem to be going all in on City attack, which is fine, but I’d be more inclined to spread the net a little wider

  • Drgonzo

Sure. If that’s me I downgrade Salah to a Chelsea mid for say 7.0.
    Tune the bench with it.
Up you keeper to ddg with 1.0 of it?

  • Tom

Great article as always, not sure who I’ll trade William out for once hazard is back due to having zaha already- I have 0.5 in the bank.
Here’s my ‘final’ draft (for the 5th time) if anyone could please give me some comments.
    Foster (Begovic)
    Walker Matip Cedric (Schindler Rangel)
    Alli Willian Zaha Redmond (Romeu)
    Lukaku Lacazette Firmino

Matip will become tripper if tripper is fit for GW1.

    • Aaron

      – ditch Rangel, his ownership is too high and you’ll only lose money on him as people bail out (just find the lowest ownership 4.0 defender in the game on friday and go with him)
      – no Kane is a big risk IMO..

      • Stefan

disagree on Rangel, his ownership is huh because he will actually play GW1 and get points – how many other 4.0 can you safely say that about?

        My team is:

        De Gea (Elliott)
        Alonso, Trippier, Kolasnic, Dawson (Rangel)
Willian, De Bruyne, Ritchie (Carroll, Loftus Cheek)
        Kane, Lukaku, Chicarito

my concern is KDB, he is so expensive, maybe i should have Jesus + Mane instead of KDB+Chicarito, but want to see who starts GW1+ would need to trim defender too

  • MAX

Is Iwobi expected to start this weekend?

  • Springhall

    Ake/KDB/Kane or Kompany/Alli/Aguero

  • PAR

I’ve been playing around with 4 at the back for a change and seem to be comfortable with my team. I know the general consensus is 343 and jump on bandwagons but I always end up taking punts that don’t come off. I like the feel of this team, hardly any gambles except not having Lukaku.

    Foster / Fabianski
Valencia / Cedric / Cahill / Monreal (until Trippier is fit) / Mee
    Mkhitaryan / Willian / Mane / KDB / Carroll
    Kane / Chicarito / Quaner

    • Stephen T

I am ignoring the masses and the 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 and starting with a 5-3-2 formation, as I feel fixtures and player potential could warrant a second look. The 5-3-2 formation, as well as my plan appears sound through GW7. Now what happens when the whistle blows, we will have to wait and see, but I based my lineup on strength of schedule and have ended up doubling up on So’ton and Man City and tripled up on Man United. These three teams have very good fixtures to start the season and IF the formation or the players don’t work, then come GW4 I activate my WC.

I am on the fence with Chelsea. Originally had Alonso and Willian, but after GW1, I don’t like their fixtures until GW8. I do think their defense will get it together to start the season, but I feel there are stronger fixtures to play than to rely on Chelsea from the start. Willian or Fabregas? Like you I went with the TSB% data and took Willian, will start in place of Hazard, have set piece duty, but just recently I moved to Fabregas. Both are 7.0, both should start. I feel Fabregas is more of an enabler than Willian, who is more of a pure scorer in my book. Probably can’t go wrong with either in GW1 but I don’t plan on keeping the Chelsea midfielder for GW2.

  • yaniv salo

What do you think about Iwobi for GW01?

    • Joseph Crilley

Could be a good punt at a cheap price but just bare in mind that he’ll probably only be in starting XI for a couple of weeks
