Fantasy premier league – captain analysis GW4

Fantasy Premier League

Ok it’s that time again when we have to consider our captain choice in fantasy premier league gameweek 4

Best matches

Ok So first I looked at the matches that I thought could involve a reasonable amount og goals for 1 team.  For reasons I’ll explain in the post here was the games I considered in fantasy premier league GW4:

Man Utd v Crystal Palace

Spurs v Norwich

Sunderland v Arsenal

Stoke v Man City

As a little bit of a check I looked at the match odds with William Hill and here they are for the best 5 odds.

Man Utd – £1.20 to win

Spurs £1.44 to win

Man City £1.61

Arsenal 1.67

Southampton £1.85

Personally I’m reluctant to drag anyone in from the Southampton game as West Ham can be quite strong at times away and Southampton have only scored 2 goals so far and 1 was a pen so I’ve discounted that game

Best players

Here’s the players I chose as my leading lights focusing on those games in the main

RVP

Soldado

Giroud

Negredo

I’ve also added on Benteke

Next I did a sense check with William Hill to see if I had missed anyone obvious.  Here were the best odds for anytime goal scorer

RVP – £1.40

Welbeck  – £1.80

Soldado  – £1.80

Benteke – £1.91

Giroud – £2.00

Negredo – £2.00

Lambert – £2.00

Sturridge – £2.00

I’ll now go through the merits of all the  above and whether I think they are a captain option.  By the way just because I wouldn’t make them captain in this game doesn’t mean I wouldn’t have them in my team.  This is just about being captain in this 1 game.  Additionally if I  think 1 player could be good for this game it doesnt mean that he is ranked above others it’s just for this game.

RVP

Has to be the obvious candidate this week.  2 goals against Swansea in the opening match followed by 2 blanks against Chelsea and Liverpool.  Only Giroud has better underlying shooting stats so far but has had easier opposition.  Only negatives are the lack of chances he’s created for others so far which was a string to his bow last year. The other is unfortunately Rooney isn’t fit and Utd and RVP will miss his creativity.   RVP has penalty duties but for some reason last week wasnt that involved in set pieces.
Palace haven’t been the worst defensive side so far but have conceded 4 goals, 3 against 2 of the poorer attacking teams in Sunderland and Stoke although they looked resilient against Spurs. This will be their first test away to one of the top 4 teams and will find is heavy weather.
RVP last year was the most consistent returner but could also produce big hauls. Also had a great international break with 3 goals. Hard to look past him.

Benteke

3rd in the underlying stats but also creating chances as well as scoring 3 goals in the process against 3 of the better defences in the league. Has looked top quality. Is the focal point of Villas attack plus has pen duties up his sleeve as well.
The Newcastle defence was woeful against Man City but has since then got 2 clean sheets. They were against 2 of the poorer attacking teams away from home in Fulham and West Ham though not too much can be taken from that.  Lower third underlying defensive stats
Benteke is definitely an option for me

Giroud

Has to be considered an option given the creative talent around him which will include the debut of Ozil.  Giroud having taken the penalty against Fenerbache should also be on pen duties in the absence of Arteta and Podolski which is another plus. Has the best shooting stats plus creating chances and scored 3 goals in 3 games. In great form. Arsenal were also extremely impressive away at Fulham in retaining the ball and ruthless on the counter.
The Sunderland defence has been extremely poor having conceded more goals than any other team in the league so far. Their only test at home so far though has been home to Fulham which they lost 1-0 but defended ok against a pretty blunt attack. Its hard to see Arsenal not scoring and if they score early then anything could happen to Sunderland on the break as even Palace looked lethal on the break against them.  The Sunderland underlying defensive stats have been pretty good though around mid table despite the 5 goals.  For me though the fixtures of Fulham Southampton and Palace haven’t exactly been testing defensively
Giroud is also a captain option for me due to the strength of the Arsenal attack.

Soldado

Scored 2 pens and although its good to know he has those duties Spurs have struggled to open up teams and their victories against Palace and Swansea were laboured to say the least. Given their struggles to break teams down at home last year its hard to have faith in their ability to do it here. Eriksen joining will definitely help as will a move to 4-2-3-1 with Eriksen close to Soldado. Personally it will take a few games for me to have enough faith in Spurs to create chances for Soldado to give him the captains armband and when the competition is RVP at home to Palace then its a  no for me

Welbeck

Should play behind RVP given Rooneys injury and was impressive against Swansea.  Underlying stats aren’t too bad but despite the opposition handing the captains armband is just a step too far for me

Negredo

Should start given his performance vs Dzeko last week but Pellegrini is nothing if not hard to predict so far.  However Negredo with 2 goals so far and the most shots in the box of any striker per minute, he looks the  real deal for me at the moment.  probably wont have pen duties which will go to Aguero I think.  Silva being a doubt isn’t ideal but the Stoke defence has been pretty poor overall and was pulled all around the park by Liverpool.

I can see goals for Man City in this and Negredo is the likely person to get them being the most advanced striker. I can also see Stoke scoring with City not having  Demichellis and Kompany which will also help Negredo as City wont be able to sit back.

Negredo is an option for me.

Lambert

West Ham from time to time can really defend away from home so Lambert is just too much of a risk for me.

Sturridge

3 goals in 3 games for Sturridge.  Has got reasonably good underlying stats but don’t really warrant that return and Liverpool have been unconvincing in patches going forward.  Swansea have had a difficult start with Spurs and Man Utd in the fixtures and have conceded 5 goals and have the worst underlying defensive stats of anyone.   still I haven’t been completely convinced about Liverpool and while I’m seriously considering Sturridge for my team as far as far as the captain armband’s concerned its a no for me.

Summary

Ok so here’s my ranking of the captain opportunities

1.  RVP

2.  Benteke

3.  Giroud

4.  Negredo

Wouldn’t back for the captains armband, Sturridge, Welbeck, Lambert and Soldado

That’s it hope you found that useful
