fantasy premier league captain choice gameweek 23

Firstly lets look at games that could end up with 1 team dominating and scoring a number of goals.  These are:

1.  Arsenal v Villa

2.  Man Utd v Leicester

3.  Southampton v Swansea

From the first game it’s Sanchez and Giroud.  As for Man Utd, I’ll focus on Di Maria.  I’m not convinced myself on Pelle or Tadic as captain options

Sanchez (Villa H)

Will he start?

Didn’t start against Brighton in the FA Cup so looks likely to start

Whats his record and consistency like home and away?

Overall he’s scored 12 goals and 7 assists in 21 games.  He’s returned a goal or assist in 12/21 games overall.  Thats a 57% return rate.  At home he’s lethal and scored 6 goals and 6 assists in 10 games.  At home he’s returned in 7 of 10 games which is a 70% return rate.

How has he performed against lower placed opposition at home?

He has a fantastic record against lower placed opposition at home getting 10 plus point scores in 3 of those 5 qualifying games plus 1 game with 9 points.

Whats his recent home form like?

Here’s the last 4 home games:

SOU(H) 1-0 90 minutes  1 goal  0 assist   9 points
NEW(H) 4-1 86 minutes  0 goals  2 assists   9 points
QPR(H) 2-1 90 minutes   1 goal 1 assists   10 points
STK(H) 3-0 90 minutes   2 goals  1 assist   19 points

Whats his underlying shooting and creating chances like?

Over the season he is probably the best midfielder for overall shooting and creating chances stats.

Whats the opposition defence like?

Here’s their last 4 away games:

CRY(A) 1-0
WBA(A) 0-1
SWA(A) 0-1
LEI(A) 0-1

So a good away record although hardly the most testing opposition.  They do have an injury to key defender Ron Vlaar which won’t help.

Over the season the stats are surprisingly good.  They’ve got 4 clean sheets in 11 away games.   Only WBA and Sunderland have more cleans sheets away.  They’ve also conceded 12 goals away.  Only Southampton and Man City have conceded less goals away.   Everton away and Chelsea away they conceded 3 goals

Overall thoughts?

Should play and has a great home record especially against lower placed teams.  Villa may have a good record away but Everton and Chelsea have shown they can be vulnerable against the better attacking sides.

Giroud (Villa H)

Will he start?

Played 70 minutes against Brighton but given injury related rest this season should start.

Whats his record and consistency like home and away?

Overall he’s scored 6 goals and 0 assists in 9 starts and 2 sub appearances.  He’s returned a goal or assist in 5/11 games overall.  Thats a 45% return rate.  At home he’s not really performed and scored 3 goals and 0 assists in 6 games.  At home he’s returned in 2 of 6 games which is a 33% return rate.

How has he performed against lower placed opposition at home?

His record against lower placed opposition at home is poor only returning in 1 of 5 home qualifying games.

Whats his recent home form like?

Not great

Here’s the last 4 home games:

SOU(H) 1-0 26 minutes Blank 1 point
NEW(H) 4-1 72 minutes  2 goals 13 points
QPR(H) 2-1 52 minutes Blank -2 points
STK(H) 3-0 72 minutes Blank 2 points

Whats his underlying shooting and creating chances like?

Good shooting and creating chances underlying stats.

Whats the opposition defence like?

Here’s their last 4 away games from the Sanchez part above:

CRY(A) 1-0
WBA(A) 0-1
SWA(A) 0-1
LEI(A) 0-1

So a good away record although hardly the most testing opposition.  They do have an injury to key defender Ron Vlaar which won’t help.

Over the season the stats are surprisingly good.  They’ve got 4 clean sheets in 11 away games.   Only WBA and Sunderland have more cleans heets away.  They’ve also conceded 12 goals away.  Only Southampton and Man City have conceded less goals away.   Everton away and Chelsea away they conceded 3 goals

Overall thoughts?

The stats aren’t compelling at all although on his day he can be devestating

Di Maria (Leicester H)

Will he start?

Played the full 90 in the FA Cup but hard to believe he won’t play

Whats his record and consistency like home and away?

Overall he’s scored 3 goals and 6 assists in 12 starts and 2 sub appearances.  He’s returned a goal or assist in 6/14 games overall.  Thats a 43% return rate.  At homes he’s been fairly ordinary and scored 1 goals and 3 assists in 7 games.  At home he’s returned in 3 of 7 games which is a 43% return rate.

How has he performed against lower placed opposition at home?

His record against lower placed opposition at home is good only returning in 2 of 3 home qualifying games.

Whats his recent home form like?

Not great

Here’s the last 4 home games:

CHE(H) 1-1 90 minutes Blank 2 points
CRY(H) 1-0 70 minutes 0 goals 1 assist 6 points
HUL(H) 3-0 13 minutes Blank 1 point
SOU(H) 0-1 71 minutes Blank 2 points

Whats his underlying shooting and creating chances like?

OK.  Little in the way of shooting stats but good creating chances underlying stats.

Whats the opposition defence like?

Here’s their last 4 away games:

AVL(A) 1-2
WHU(A) 0-2
HUL(A) 1-0
LIV(A) 2-2

So a mixed away record.

Over the season the stats are pretty ordinary.   They’ve got 2 clean sheets in 11 away games and concededed more than 1 goals in 8 of those 11 games.   Only Spurs, Everton, Burnley West Ham and  QPR have less cleans sheets away.  They’ve also conceded 18 goals away.  Only Newcastle, Burnley and QPR have conceded more goals away.

Overall thoughts?

Nothing in the stats to suggest he’s a reliable prospect so far this season.  However Leicester have been one of the poorer defences away and you have to expect goals.  Di Maria has set pieces to assist that.  He has been shunted around position wise which hasn’t helped him.  He is a class player though and the opposition is poor.

Bookmaker odds

Here’s a book makers anytime goalscoring odds:

£1.75 – RVP

£1.83 – Falcao,

£1.85 – Giroud, Sanchez

£2.02 – Pelle

£2.12 – Costa

£2.15 – Sturridge

Di Maria is £3.10.  The 2 Man Utd strikers are favourite although that is a vote for underlying quality and the opposition rather than form.  Pelle has little form to recommend him and Sturridge is an injury doubt.  Costa is facing strong opposition in Man City
