fantasy premier league captain choice – gameweek 5

Fantasy Premier League

rooney 3

Here’s our fantasy premier league captain choice options for gameweek 5

So firstly here’s the games that have potential are:

Spurs v WBA

Leicester v Man Utd

Everton v Palace

I’ve added in Costa as well due to his form

Here’s the options then:

Adebayor

A goal and 2 assists in his first 4 games and a 50% return rate has been a reasonable start.  The good sign is that a goal and assist came in the 4-0 win at home to QPR .  The other good sign is that his shooting and creating chances stats are almost as good as anyone.  So from the attacking side it looks a good shout.  He’s also only 8% owned so if he does succeed then your ranking will feel the benefit.

WBA away are a bit of a mystery this season with a commendable draw away to Southampton but they were hammered at Swansea so anything is possible.  In terms of shots conceded overall and big chances conceded overall they aren’t actually that bad.  However this was the case last year and it didn’t really get reflected in results.  The defence will be back in full swing as well with Lescott and McAuley looking fit which will help them.

Falcao

There’s no doubt about his quality it’s just his fitness and whether he will start thats the question. 28 goals in 34 games for A Madrid in 12/13 really says it all.  His first game was fairly quiet in his 30 minutes or so.

As for Leicester alot has been made of the fact that Leicester have conceded more shots in the box than anyone but bizzarely I’ve seen 3 of Leicesters games live and they really have defended with alot of resilience.  You also have to remember that 3 of the 4 games have been against Arsenal, Everton and Chelsea.

Rooney

The risk with Rooney is positional and the rather mixed form he’s shown.   However his GW4  form against QPR was excellent after 2 very quiet games. It’s possible he could move backwards to the number 10 position to accomodate RVP and Falcao but it’s also possible he could stay up front if either RVP or Falcao are benched.  RVP due to form and Falcao due to fitness.  However he played the number 10 position most of the year last season and his returns were pretty good.  With Costa he’s probably the most obvious captain potential and certainly of the high ownership players the most obvious.

Lukaku

A goal and an assist and a 50% return rate is not a bad start to the season.  Unfortuantely he was fanous last season for not scoring in the home games against lower ranked teams and therefore that is the main risk against him.  Has reasonable shooting stats to start the season but not really great creating chances stats.

Palace have totally lost the ability to defend since Pulis left and 3 goals conceded at Newcastle says alot.  So far Palace have conceded 5 goals away.  Only QPR have conceded more.  On shots conceded in the box and big chances they’ve been bottom third.

Costa

Been on absolute fire so far this season with 7 goals in 4 games and far better than anyone in the shots in the box or creating chances stats.  2 of those games have been against newly promoted sides.  The other 2 were Swansea and Everton.  Everton should have been a real test but Chelsea scored early and were able to counter attack giving Costa alot more space then if the game was cagey.  Man City will be the first big test.

However you are against a defence that last year was the only behind Chelsea and Arsenal.  So far at home this season it’s been a goal conceded in both agmes against Liverpool and Stoke.  The underlying stats of big chances and shots in the box have been pretty ordinary.  It certainly isn’t the defence of last year  at the moment

The Bookies view

Here’s a bookies view of the anytime goal scorer odds.  I’ve included those at £2.10 or less

£1.91 – RVP. Falcao, Adebayor, Lukaku

£2.10 – Balotelli, Rooney, Harry Kane, Eto’o, Naismith

Costa is £2.30

I’ve discounted Kane and Eto’o for gametime risk.

RVP due to form has been ignored.  Naismith seems a little step too far at this stage for captaincy but he does have form on his side

Hope that helps your decision.  I’m sticking with Rooney.  Good luck
