Here’s my fantasy premier league captain picks for gameweek 9. Plus we take a look at what the bookies think
Fantasy premier league captain picks gameweek 9
Background
Looking firstly at the games that will most likely generate the most goals.
Here’s the best fixtures:
1. Liverpool v Hull
2. West Ham v Man City
From those games I’ve picked Sterling and Aguero. I’ve also looked at Pelle as he seems to be generating some captain interest
Sterling (Hull Home )
- Will he start?
No Champions league this week although with “tiredgate” anything is possible. Hopefully Brendan Rodgers wont repeat the ridiculous position where he played him in the Capital One and rested him in the premier league
- How consistent is he generally and at home.
OK: Overall he’s returned in 5/8 games (63%). At home it’s not so consistent. He’s returned in 2/4.
- How has he performed against low placed opposition home
Not enough data: Was a sub at home to Villa so ignore that. Other game was home to WBA where he got an assist
- Whats his recent form like
OK: Here’s his 4 home games.
SOU(H) 2-1 90 minutes 1 goal 1 assist 13 points
AVL(H) 0-1 30 minutes Blank 1 point
EVE(H) 1-1 90 minutes Blank 2 points
WBA(H) 2-1 90 minutes 1 assist 5 points
So apart from the Southampton game it’s a pretty ordinary home record
- Whats the opposition defence like
Mixed and depends on formation: Here’s their away results so far
QPR(A) 1-0
AVL(A) 1-2
NEW(A) 2-2
ARS(A) 2-2
So not a great record. Their 3-5-2 formation defends better and that will surely be rolled out against Liverpool. It didn’t really help against Arsenal. So overall it’s not a great away record
- Overall thoughts
Should start. Sterling has a pretty mixed record at home although he is a reasonably consistent returner overall. Hull don’t really travel defensively that well though which gives him a chance
Aguero (West Ham away)
- Will he start?
With no Champions League this week the odds are good although given the injury history and the number of strikers at City rotation isn’t out of the question.
- How consistent is he generally and away?
Excellent: Overall he’s returned in 6/8 games away. He’s returned in all 4 away games so far scoring 4 goals and 0 assists.
- How has he performed against low placed opposition away
Excellent: He’s scored against Newcastle, Hull and Villa away
- Whats his recent form like
Excellent: Here’s his 4 away games
NEW(A) 2-0 8 minutes 1 goal 6 points
ARS(A) 2-2 66 minutes 1 goal 6 points
HUL(A) 4-2 71 minutes 1 goal 8 points
AVL(A) 2-0 90 minutes 1 goal 7 points
Scored in all 4 games
- Whats the opposition defence like
Mixed: Here’s their 4 home games:
TOT(H) 0-1
SOU(H) 1-3
LIV(H) 3-1
QPR(H) 2-0
So a bit of a mixed record. Certainly their more attacking stancs has meant they concede more goals
- Is he an option?
Absolute quality player who can score against anyone, anywhere. Only question is gametime but with no Champions League hopefully that will see him start.
Pelle ( Stoke Home)
Will he start?
With no involvement in European competition it seems unlikely he wont start
How consistent is he overall and away?
Very Good: Overall he’s returned in 5/8 games. At home it’s 3/4 games
Whats his recent form like?
Excellent: Here’s his 4 home games:
WBA(H) 0-0 90 minutes Blank 2 points
NEW(H) 4-0 90 minutes 2 goals 13 points
QPR(H) 2-1 90 minutes 1 goal 9 points
SUN(H) 8-0 79 minutes 2 goals 1 assist 15 points
Whats the opposition defence like?
Good but a couple of questionable performances: Last year their away defence was pretty ordinary. Here’s their 4 away to date.
HUL(A) 1-1
MCI(A) 1-0
QPR(A) 2-2
SUN(A) 1-3
So started well but haven’t defended well in their last 2 away games
Is he an option?
Has been consistent with a very good home record. Playing a team that has defended well overall but has lapsed in their last 2 away games.
Bookmaker check
Not such a good week for odds so I’ve had to widen the net. Here’s the anytime goal scoring odds at £2.10 or under:
£1.83 – Aguero, Dzeko, Balotelli,
£2.00 – Lambert
£2.05 – Pelle
£2.10 – Kane, Diego Costa
Sterling is £2.15
I’ve ruled out Lambert, Dzeko, Balotelli Costa and Kane as all have gametime issues. Injury in Costa’s sake and potential selection risk for Dzeko, Balotelli, Lambert and Kane.
I’ve gone for Aguero with Pelle as the safe gametime option in reserve
