Firstly here’s the Fixtures
We go through each team by the clean sheet rank I’ve given them. We calculated that in a very basic way. We’ve compared the rank of the teams defence vs the rank of the opponents attack. As I said it’s a bit basic and it doesn’t differentiate between home and away or recent circumstances. Thats why we’ve put the clean sheet odds for GW18 of one bookie as another point of reference. We’ve also given you the rank of those odds for each of the teams. The clean sheet odds are the amount won for £1 invested. The odds are of Wednesday when I wrote the article. Hope thats clear. In ranking the bookies, if the odds are the same for 2 or more teams, I’ve followed my ranking. As I’ve used stats over the season sometimes recent circumstances wont be factored in. Thats why it’s worth looking at the bookies odds and especially the outliers as another view and looking at the narrative under the heading “general points on teams”. Last week
Only 4 clean sheets last week to Spurs, Watford, Swansea, West Ham. I had 1 in my top 10 the bookies also 1.
Last week the bookies favoured Southampton at home to Spurs, Everton home to Leicester and Swansea home to West Ham for a clean sheet more than me. I won 2 of those although the bookies correctly picked the Swansea clean sheet which I have to say was impressive.
I favoured Watford home to Liverpool far more than them so a clean sheet there for me which again was impressive if I must say so myself. Shame none in my team!
This week
Only 1 games with odds under £1.85. That being Man City home to Sunderland. Down to 10 places is £3.10 which seems normal.
Looking at the outliers from the bookies odds where my rank and theirs is different by more than 5 ranks There are 5
The bookies favour Chelsea home to Watford, Villa home to West Ham and Bournemouth home to C Pal more than me. I’ll take all of those on
I favour WBA at Swansea and Watford at Chelsea more than the bookies. I’m not sure about a Watford clean sheet but I think the odds of £6.00 are very generous for Watford. I definitely will take WBA for a clean sheet at Swansea
General points on teams
ManUtd have defensive injuries and a loss of defensive form. The Norwich defensive performance was plain embarrasing.
Man City have yet to keep a clean sheet without Vincent Kompany. He’s training but whether he will start remains to be seen.
West Ham with a number of injuries in attack and are shutting up shop and have had 3 consecutive nil nils.
Liverpool have injuries to the first choice CBs in Lovren and Skrtel. Sakho and Toure will hardly have Jamie Vardy (if fit) trembling
Villa have Richards injured who is their key defender.
Norwich have taken a far more defensive attitude to games after the thrashing at Newcastle
Sunderland were terrible at Chelsea and is the big Sam effect wearing off?
Just a reminder as you can see from the odds that it’s very difficult to predict clean sheets and often there are only 5 or so clean sheets out of 20 teams playing so it’s not a silver bullet.
