Fantasy Premier League

Here’s a quick article on fantasy premier league defence rotations.  This is where we look to put cheap players in our defence who rotate home and away.  We give a few team rotations options as some food for thought as well as some initial player suggestions.

2 team rotations

If your chosen formation is 3-4-3 the chances are you’ll go for 1 or 2 premium defenders from a top 4 challenging team and then try and minimise your bench cost and maximise your clean sheet potential through teams that rotate home and away.  If you pick 1 premium defender then the next 2 slots can be from 2 rotating pairs.  The stats show that there are significant more home clean sheets than away clean sheets so maximising home games in theory should maximise the clean sheet potential.  Some teams rotate home and away through police related geography such as Man Utd and Man City.  However some are just through the quirks of the computer.  Ideally what you want are 2 £4.5m defenders that rotate home and away perfectly.   A maximum for me would be one of the pairs costing £5.0m.  Here’s a few examples with the fixtures that follow.  I have shown the home game irrespective of the difficulty of the fixture and not identified the team playing.  Italics mean an away game if both are playing away.  I’ve also only shown the opposition not which team is playing them of the pair.  Lastly it’s the fixtures until Dec 31

None are ideal.  I have no faith in the Bournemouth defence given Eddie Howes cavalier style.  Similar for Burnley.  Crystal Palace and Swansea are a reasonable combination if the cost is right but Liverpool, Man City and Chelsea in the first 6 isn’t ideal.  Hull Stoke is poor fixture wise.  I do have faith in Hull with Steve Bruce and Middlesboro after their defensive record last season and their acquisitions but the early fixtures aren’t great.

3 team rotations

I’ll probably go for 2 premium top 4 challenging defenders plus a 3 way rotation.  I’ll definitely go for £4.5m as the maximum cost.  I think with 3 teams you can concentrate on the teams first and the fixtures 2nd.  As long as all 3 teams don’t play away and home at the same time then you should have a reasonable chance of a decent fixture each week even if sometimes you have to stray from the home game.

The teams I favour that are likely to have £4.5m defenders are Sunderland, Hull, Middlesboro, WBA and Watford

Here’s 2 combinations as an example showing only the opposition for a home game but not the team playing them

The 2nd certainly looks the best fixture of the 2 although it’s close on a team basis and may depend on the future of Big Sam.

The player suggestions depend on prices but here’s some very initial suggestions subject to further pre-season games and prices:

Bournemouth:  Francis, Cook

Watford:  Cathcart

Burnley: Mee, Keane

WBA:  Dawson

C Palace: Ward, Delaney

Swansea: Williams

Hull:  Davies, Dawson, Robertson

Stoke:  Wollscheid, Pieters

Middlesboro: TBC

Sunderland: Kone
