fantasy premier league DGW31 – a closer look at Aston Villa

Fantasy Premier League

Here’s our article where we take a closer look at Aston Villa for the double gameweek coming up in DGW31. We look at a number of players detailed stats to help you decide on options for your FPL team.

Background

With Villa in the FA Cup semi final their fixture has been postponed to GW31 giving them 2 games in that gameweek.  Since taking over 4 games ago Sherwood has changed the teams mindset from a negative defensive team to a team looking to attack.  This gives us the potential for attacking players for the double gameweek.  Here we look at the options in some detail

Fixtures:

Here’s Villas next 6 gameweeks starting at this week GW30:

Swansea (H)
DGW31 Man Utd (A)
DGW31 QPR (H)
Spurs (A)
– Gameweek 33 –
Man City (A)
Everton (H)

The double gameweek has a good fixture in the home game to QPR but away to Man Utd is a bad game from an attacking or defensive perspective.  Swansea at home next though is a good fixture to introduce an attacking player.  Obviously then with a blank in GW33 you’ll have to ship any players out.

The attacking players

Here’s the 6 attacking players who played in the 4-0 victory at Sunderland.  Sherwood played 4-4-2 with Sinclair and NZogbia on the flanks in midfield and Benteke and Agbonlahor up front.

The midfield

Firstly given Lamberts negative outlook it’s difficult to make too much from the season figures.  However although Sherwood has looked to attack more the stats are rather distorted by the 4-0 win at Sunderland.

The central midfield players of Delph and Cleverly perform more of a defensive role and really as you can see from the stats should be ruled out.  That leaves the choice between the 2 relatively new wide players coming into or back into the team since Sherwood took over of Sinclair and NZogbia.  Gametime wise that does pose some risks.  Sinclair has started 3 of the last 4 but played 90 minutes in 2 of those.  NZogbia has started the last 2 but understandably only played 58 and 78 minutes.  They both play similar roles and as far as recent form is concerned it’s also similar in terms of returns although Sinclair having scored has the edge.  As far as the underlying stats are concerned if you look at the post Sherwood world Sinclair has better goal threat in terms of shots while NZogbia is more involved in play and creates more chances.

I have to confess I’m not sure who has the set piece duties in the Sherwood world.  Prior to Sherwood it was Westwood.  NZogbia seems to have corners so I’m assuming that he will take indirect free kicks.

At the moment I’m considering Sinclair as a replacement for Puncheon but I’m leaving it to the last minute on Saturday.  I’m nervous about news on the Arsenal v Sunderland postponement.

The forwards

Benteke is the class player who was in woeful form prior to Sherwood joining.  That has changed with 3 goals and an assist in his last 4 games and returned a goal or assist in those games.  He also has penalty duties.

If Benteke was bad prior to Sherwood then Agbonlahor was even worse with 3 goals in 25 games prior to Sherwood joining.  That has changed with 3 goals and 2 returning games since.

In the last 4 gameweeks underlying stats in terms of shots are surprisingly similar but Benteke is miles ahead in terms of creating chances and pen box touches.  Over the season though it’s different with Benteke far ahead on shooting stats.

For me Benteke is the only option.

The defence

The defence is a difficult option given the game at Man Utd.  Here’s what I said in my article yesterday which has all the main facts:

Over the season not too bad with 8 clean sheets and 11th of 20 teams on goals conceded.  Recently though not so good with the Sunderland game being the first clean sheet in 9.  Hutton has been the favourite at £4.4m but his place has to be in doubt after Bacuna’s excellent agme last week in his absence.  Clark is probably the next option at £4.3m.  GK Guzan is £4.7m

Hopefully that gave you a bit more detail in considering Villa players.  Remember to look at your team befire deciding to see whether you can filed a full team in GW33 though
