bandwagons and sinking ships, Fantasy Premier League

Here’s our fantasy premier league DGW37 transfers article where we outline and give a view on the most transferred in players so far in the gameweek (the bandwagons) and the most transferred out (the sinking ships). There’s a table of stats on each as well as some narrative on their prospects and their upcoming fixtures

The Bandwagons

These are the 5 most transferred IN players so far in the gameweek. The fixture ease is for the next 2 gameweeks to the end of the season . See our latest fixture ease article. The fixtures also take into account the double gameweek.

ATGS odds are for DGW37 games. I’ve used returns on a per minute basis. FPL mins per point means how many minutes does it take to earn an FPL point. The lower the better obviously.

Jesus

The Man City forward is top of the transfers in for the 2nd week in a row.

A crucial part of transfers this weeK will be assessing which teams will have something to play for to the end of the season and of those teams which players are gametime secure.

Manchester City still have Manchester United and Arsenal breathing down their necks for a top 4 Champions League spot.  This is hugely important for the club and Pep personally.  Jesus should be a player fairly secure of gametime.  He’s not played an awful lot of football so there’s no fatigue issue.  He also falls into the Pep style of play and Pep, I think, will want to give him as much football as possible to acclimatise to the Premier League.  Having said that trying to 2nd guess Pep is a bit of a mugs game but that’s my take on it at the moment.

Early captain polls say he should be a contender for the captain armband in DGW37 too.

There’s no doubt he has a phenomenal record since coming to the premier league.  The goals scored certainly suggest he knows how to put the ball in the net.  He also seems to have estalished that he will be the furtherest forward striker and Aguero, if fit and selected, will tend to drop off more.  That should help Jesus’s “tap in”  percentage.

If you were searching for negatives you would probably say that he has had a very kind run of fixtures so we don’t really know how good he is.  You would also question why he only got 1 assist in a 5 game rout of Palace and didn’t have that many clear cut chances.  Lastly, you would point to the amount of minutes played and say it’s a very small sample to judge him.

Costa

Chelsea can win the league this Friday should they beat WBA away.  That will at least ensure that the Chelsea forward plays the first game of DGW37.  Should Chelsea win that game and the title, and that’s not guaranteed, then he could easily be rested given he will have played 3000 minutes of premier league football by then.  I also imagine Conte will want to give the expensive and largely unused signing, Batshuyai a run out.  That’s even if it’s just a shop window one.

There’s also the matter of the FA Cup final on the 27th of May which Conte may want to freshen Costa up for.  It’s also worth noting that Chelsea’s remaining opposition also have nothing to play for so there won’t be a moral issue in rotation.

Apart from the gametime issues his form has returned with 3 goals and an assist in his last 2 games.  It’s also worth noting that the underlying stats hadn’t really dropped off that much in his barren spell anayway.

The other negative, apart from gametime,  is his inability to gain bonus points compared to strikers of a similar price.  Lukaku, Aguero, Ibrahimovic and Kane all have bonus points as a higher percentage of their total points and a higher bonus point per minute played. Thats despite all of them, except Kane, not having as good a goals and assist per minute record.  That can count against you in the captain stakes

De Bruyne

A goal and 2 assist performance has bought the Man City midfielder back into contention for a place in our FPL teams.  It certainly helped to break a run of 4 games with only 1 return.

The current 4-1-4-1 formation with Aguero out certainly suits him.  He plays centrally and in the Palace game he created a phenomenal number of chances.  Pep has certainly looked to play him centrally in the last few games.  At Middlesborough he played centrally behind Aguero and Jesus.  When he’s less attractive is when he’s out on the right flank and you feel like you’re paying £10.4 for a right wing back.

He does have all set pieces.

He has started 8 of the last 9 PL games although only in 1 of those games have both Aguero and Jesus been fit so it doesn’t provide conclusive evidence. Aguero is still a doubt for DGW37 until there’s more news.    18 assists is a great record and only Payet and Fabregas have created more chances per minute than De Bruyne.  He could score more though and could be cheaper when you look at Sterling and Sane’s price in the £7m’s

Kompany

While Stones is injured and Man City have something to play for it’s hard to see the Man City CB not starting.  Man City have got 3 clean sheets in the 4 games he’s played since coming back from his latest injury so there’s a huge incentive to keep him in the side.  Stones is still a doubt .  Kompany’s also scored 3 goals in 570 minutes of playing which is not far off a goal every other game.

He’s not cheap at £6.0m but given the fixtures, City’s motivation and the defence with him in the team he looks an option.  It’s just the Stones position and whether Pep wants to rest him to avoid further injury risk.

Fixtures from DGW37 to the end of the season:

Leicester (H) DGW37
West Brom (H) DGW37

Caballero

With the alternative Man City GK out for the rest of the season Caballero is a certain selection.  That’s not something to be taken for granted in a Pep team and at his price of £4.7m he represents great value compared to other options in the Man City defensive line.

Lukaku

Top of the sinking ships again.  If you’ve held the PL’s leading goal scorer for this long and suffered through the Everton’s striker’s 3 recent blanks then I’m a bit surprised you’ve ditched just before a home game to Watford.  Double gameweek or not he is certain to play and has a great home record

Fixtures from DGW37 to the end of the season:

Watford (H)
Arsenal (A)

Aguero

This has to be about injury risk as I would have thought given his quality and his double gameweek if you’ve got him you’re surely going to hold him.  I might have at least waited until there’s more news as to whether he will be fit.  Pep is usually quite forthcoming compared to some managers.

Coutinho

He really does have pretty good stats over the season when on the pitch.  However only 1 goal in his last 4 games will be the focus of his FPL owners as well as the lack of a DGW. Combine that with the Southampton 0-0 just played has helped the transfers out along. Then mix in West Ham’s 3 consecutive clean sheets and how Spurs failed to score against them and you’ve got FPL managers running elsewhere.  However Liverpool have got everything to play for.  West Ham,  now they are safe and not playing a rather disliked London rival, could be an entirely different kettle of jellied eels.

Fixtures from DGW37 to the end of the season:

West Ham (A)
Middlesbrough (H)

Zaha

5 consecutive blanks and no DGW next is an understandable transfer out.  However Palace home to Hull in an absolutely crucial relegation match gives incentive aplenty for Zaha and Palace to turn up.  Whether Big Sam will try and squeeze out the draw that will make them safe by playing negatively is the additional blight on keeping him

Fixtures from DGW37 to the end of the season:

Hull (H)
Man Utd (A)

Firmino

3 consecutive blanks for the Liverpool midfielder, no longer playing striker and no DGW.  The converse is that he is certain to play and Liverpool have everything to play for.  His record is far more patchy than Coutinho’s though and he doesn’t have the extra bow of set pieces.
