Last week’s picks

A second successive disappointing gameweek for my picks as it was blanks across the board. However, I would claim that the players were rather unlucky to not have any fantasy returns. Joselu had an expected goals tally of 1.32 as you would have seen from my gameweek review article but was unable to find the back of the net after some poor finishing. There was a first start of the season for Coutinho but he was unable to inspire his side to victory. He had an impressive 7 shots and 5 key passes but there wasn’t too much of high quality in all honesty. Maguire was at fault for the goal that his side conceded but they didn’t give up too many other chances through the game.

This week’s picks

Leighton Baines, 5.9mil DEF, 7.8%

Now the Everton defence has been surprisingly poor so far this season but they have had some very difficult fixtures. In his prime, Baines has been absolute FPL gold and has cost as much as 7.8mil previously. He has registered over 125 points in 8 of the last 9 seasons including scores of 178, 177 and 169 which highlights the potential he possesses. At times this season, he has lined up in a wing back position and there’s a chance that he will be taking penalties although Rooney and Sigurdsson are also in the mix. If this combination remains, the Englishman could be in line for some serious fantasy returns.

The fixture list is about to turn for the Toffee’s and, in particular, their next three fixtures look very promising. They face Bournemouth, Burnley and Brighton which looks a great opportunity for Everton to change their defensive fortunes and keep some clean sheets. If Baines can find his attacking form, then he will be primed to bring home points for his managers.

Everton’s next 6 fixtures:

Bournemouth (H)
Burnley (H)
Brighton (A)
Arsenal (H)
Leicester (A)
Watford (H)

Raheem Sterling, 7.8mil MID, 2.9%

City players are certainly the flavour of the week but I’m going to mention one who has been rather overlooked. There are doubts about Sterling’s place in the starting XI but he has played 90 minutes during the last 2 games for which he has been available. He has also scored in 3 successive Premier League games for the first time in his career. In addition, Sterling has posted some impressive underlying stats. His xG per 90 is an impressive 0.54, he averages more shots per game than any of his midfield colleagues and he is the cheapest out of the group of likely starters.

Man City are on fire at the moment having scored 15 goals last week without conceding any. Considering they play Palace at home this week, a side who currently have 0 points, it looks a great time to bring in their assets. They play Chelsea the week after but once that game is out the way, they have some juicy looking fixtures and Sterling could provide you with a great differential.

Man City’s next 6 fixtures:
Crystal Palace (H)
Chelsea (A)
Stoke (H)
Burnley (H)
West Brom (A)
Arsenal (H)

Davinson Sanchéz, 6.0mil DEF, 0.2%

Spurs’ new signing has made a good start to his career in the Premier League. Having started the last 2 games, he has helped his side to clean sheets in both. He has been lining up in the centre of a back three with Alderweireld and Vertonghen either side of him. We have already seen evidence of Pochettino’s tendency to rotate his full backs so it could be worth investing in the centre backs to avoid the disappointment of your player being benched. You certainly wouldn’t want to miss out on the next 3 games for Tottenham as they face West Ham, Huddersfield and Bournemouth.

The men formerly from White Hart Lane have arguably had the best defence in the league over the past couple of seasons so purchasing one of the defenders looks a good idea. Sanchez also showed last season at Ajax that he has the attacking threat which FPL managers crave in their defenders. He scored 6 goals in just 32 games in the Dutch league so it will only be a matter of time before he finds himself on the scoresheet.

Tottenham’s next 6 games:
West Ham (A)
Huddersfield (A)
Bournemouth (H)
Liverpool (H)
Man Utd (A)
Crystal Palace (H)

That concludes my picks for this week. Let me know any of your differential picks in the comments section and feel free to ask any questions about your team for this gameweek. You can also find me on Twitter.
