fantasy premier league double gameweeks – surprise potential DGW27 announced

THE BASICS

So here was the announcement on Man City’s twitter:

At the moment Man City v Stoke is in GW28 which starts on March 11.  City’s replay against Middlesboro in the cup is Feb 28.  Assuming they win (it’s hard to imagine they won’t) then the Man City v Stoke fixture will be in GW27.

That would give Man City and Stoke the following double gameweeks

Man City

Sunderland v Man City and Man City v Stoke

Stoke

Stoke v Middlesboro and Man City v Stoke

HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN?

Double gameweek planning has been based on 2 premises.  1 that there can’t be clashes with Champions League and Europa League games irrespective if their is no English team involved.  That was relaxed last last season for 1 game due to fixture congestion.  Midweek GW27 has Champions League and Europa League fixtures so this seems to be an extension of this relaxation.  I also noticed that Valencia v Real Madrid was played this Wednesday night in conflict with European games as well.  That’s with a Spanish UCL game being played a few hours down the road admittedly I believe at different times.  If postponed games are peppered around the rest of the remaining gameweeks that could really devalue the 2nd wildcard if you’re holding it.  This is because the 2nd wildcard has been held by most waiting for a mass double gameweek in GW34 or GW37.

The 2nd premise has been the amount of notice required for Police etc.  Tis is a couple of weeks away so still fits with this premise

THE IMPLICATIONS

Man City have no fixture in GW26 as their fixture against Man Utd is postponed due to the EFL cup final which Man Utd are playing.

If Man City win their 5th round FA Cup replay then they will not play their PL game against Stoke in GW28 but GW27.

So you have a team with GW26 (BGW), GW27 (DGW), GW28 (BGW).  So the chances are your double gameweek player will be at the sacrifice of the blank weeks which does seem to offset it somewhat.  The real issue to be dealt with though is a double gameweek captain.  It will make sense to have a City attacking player as your captain.  The fixtures could even be good enough for a triple captain possibility. Aguero is the obvious candidate with Jesus injured.  Rotation with City in the Champions League and FA Cup as well would be an issue.

Stoke is a bit different.  They have a fixture in GW26 but will have none in GW28 if Man City win their FA Cup replay.  The double gameweek is diluted somewhat by the 2nd fixture being away to Man City.
