Initial thoughts

Before my wildcard last week, I began to think about the next upcoming 6 to 10 fixtures. As we all know some players are fixture proof but it does help when you look at the fixtures of games you don’t want to miss out on or be involved.

For my present team, I do not have a Chelsea or Arsenal presence. That scares me a little because I believe they will be challenging for a top 4 position late in April to May so I know at some point I will have to make some hard decisions when form kicks in on any of those players at any time.

So my thought about the next 10 fixtures is I try to rank the games of all the teams in 5 categories, ranking from easiest to hardest. I decided to give the values of 20pts for an easy fixture and 5 for a hard fixture. The rankings I do with the eye test. I look at how the team is performing with the eye test, form, and feel as I have talked about before.

This is done with a whole game in mind, not just offensively or defensively. For example this week Arsenal play Brighton at the Emirates. I think that is an easy game for Arsenal and a hard one for Brighton and this is my opinion. I think it is very important that when you watch games you have some type of a feel factor. If you don’t you will always start second guessing yourself instead of 50% of the time! :-)

Setting out the fixture table

As you can see on the table below I have then broken up the teams in 5 equal groups as the ones that have the most favourable fixtures as well.

After this analysis I began to think I might have too many players in the bottom half of this table. It also bothers me that I do not have any Arsenal coverage as I think of the top 8 to 12 teams they might score the 2nd most goals over the next 10 weeks with Man City and I believe Spurs (who I think are fixture proof) as well.

Here is an example of my reasoning (I don’t want to give all of my secrets away yet!) The reason I got rid of Lukaku in my wildcard team is that I think he will be hit and miss over the next 10 GW. I do not think from an offensive side they look like they are a complete unit. Defensively I think that it is a different ballgame. Over the next 10 games United have Liverpool (A), Spurs (H), Chelsea (A), Arsenal (A), Man City (H) sprinkled in with Palace (H), Huddersfield (A), Newcastle (H), Brighton(H) , and Watford (A) . I will probably pick up another asset with those latter 3 games as they are in between hard fixtures and are back to back (New, BHA, Wat). This is one type of analysis that has helped me in the past and I hope it helps you too…

Good Luck!
