Fantasy Premier League, Player Rankings

baines

Here again is an new format article to help you with the best defenders in my “ones to watch” article.  The article ranks the best 10 defenders and gives a table of stats for you to make your own decision.  There’s also some narrative on each player and the next 10 fixtures to take a longer view than recently given.

fantasy premier league gameweek 10 tips – “ones to watch” best defenders/GKs

I’ve put together a table of stats with a key below it to rank the 10 best defenders.  I’ve tried to take a balance between the value and the attacking players and given a price range of players in the table. Below that I’ve put some narrative on each player plus their next 10 fixtures to give you a longer view.  I’ll also try and talk about the GK option and other players where relevant

Key:

Team ownership:  The total defence and GK ownership to give you an idea of how many FPL teams have a GK or Def from that team

Mins per FPL point:  How long it takes a player to earn an FPL point.  The lower the better obviously

Goals/Assist;  Goals/Assists so far in the season

CS – H/A:  The clean sheets so far this season.  Home/Away

Pred CS:  Predicted clean sheets in the next 10 games

Baines

The Everton LB is the top total scoring defender and the top points per game defender.  Incredibly has scored or assisted in 6/9 opening games. Has pens a good share of direct free kicks and set pieces.  Also has the best creating chances stats for any defender.  Alcaraz becomes an interesting cheapie option.  The GK Howard is similar to Jagielka so no real costa advantage.

Ivanovic

The Chelsea RB is the most expensive defender although has yet to produce any attacking returns since gameweek 3.  Does have excellent shooting and creating chances stats and one of the few players who can do both.  Chelsea with Southampton is the best defence so far this season but it comes at a price.  When Azpilicueta returns from suspension he will be good value at £6.0m.  A similar price to GK Courtois

Chambers

Not much attacking potential for the Arsenal RB but this is about outstanding value for the Arsenal defence. The time to buy is now with Arsenal at home to Burnley.  No one else is worth buying in the Arsenal defence with this value available.  Latest news on the injured RB Debucjy is a return for boxing day

Rose

Spurs haven’t performed at all defensively and the loss to Man City and then Newcastle was a continuation of some pretty dismal form.  However Pochettino has proved himself as a defensive coach and you’re banking on this and some good fixtures expecially the next 2.  Everton and Chelsea are a bump in the middle.  The GK of Lloris is too expensive in comparison.

Bertrand

As I said with Chelsea, Southampton are the best defensive team at the moment and the LB is a good attacking threat.  However the fixtures are soon to get trickier and that what makes the ranking lower.  Alderweireld at £5.0m and GK Forster at £5.2m offer a cheaper way in.

Reid

7/8 good fixtures until the last 2 for the West Ham CB.  West Ham assets are quite expensive due to last years success and this is really about the fixtures rather than any solidity shown so far.  Creswell has shown good attacking stats although is £5.4m.  Tomkins also is an excellent set piece attacking threat but needs to win his place back after injury.  Adrian the £5.0m is a similar price.

Wisdom

The £4.2m WBA RB is good value for a team who when they are in the mood are strong away and at home.  The GK Foster is also good value at £4.5m.  Good fixtures with Chelsea and Arsenal as a bump.  Cheap enough to be rotated for the best fixtures

Wilson

The Stoke CB may have little attacking potential but does have good value for a team that hasn’t defended at home as well as expected but have underlying stats to sugeest that can improve plus some good home fixtures mixed in with some tricky ones.  Have also shown defensive potential away from home with the clean sheet at Man City for example.  Good enough value to be rotated for the better fixtures which is good as there’s a big bump in the middle of these 10

Liverpool (A)
Man Utd (A)
Arsenal (H)
Crystal Palace (A)
Chelsea (H)

West Brom (H)

Duff

The £4,2m Burnley CB is a cheap filler dragged out for the better games when you have 2 guaranteed starters in defence.  After a good defensive start have faded.  Little hope in the underlying stats.  3 reasonable home fixtures next though

Hull (H)
Stoke (A)
Aston Villa (H)
Newcastle (H)
QPR (A)
Southampton (H)
Spurs (A)

Dummett

The £4.0m Newcastle LB is a similar prospect to Duff above although the fixtures are probably more difficult.  To be rotated as part of a 3 man reserve to 2 full time defenders

West Brom (A)
QPR (H)
West Ham (A)
