bandwagons and sinking ships, Fantasy Premier League

Here’s our fantasy premier league gameweek 14 tips article where we outline the most transferred in players so far in the gameweek (the bandwagons) and the most transferred out (the sinking ships). There’s a table of stats on each as well as some narrative on their prospects and their next 6 fixtures

FANTASY PREMIER LEAGUE GAMEWEEK 14 TIPS – THE BANDWAGONS AND SINKING SHIPS

THE BANDWAGONS

These are the 5 most transferred in players so far in the gameweek. I was concerned my stats table had become a little cluttered and unwieldy and hard to read so I’ve replaced it with a simplified version. The headings are self explanatory. The fixt ease column shows the easeiness ranking of the next 6/3 fixtures. Go to this link for the full article on fixture eas.  Values are as per Tuesday

WALCOTT

The Arsenal RAM scored one of the 3 goals in the win over Bournemouth.  It was his first return after 3 blanks.  Has had a good season with 5 goals and 3 assists and seems to have become a regular starter.  Over the season his underlying shooting stats have been excellent.  However they have dropped off in recent matches but 2 difficult fixtures against Spurs and Man Utd wouldn’t have helped

Stoke (H)
Everton (A)
Man City (A)
West Brom (H)
Crystal Palace (H)

MANE

The Liverpool AM (with Firmino as some doubt with a knock) looks an obvious replacement for Coutinho. 6 goals and 3 assists so far this season returning in a goal or assist in 50% of his games are pretty good stats.  He doesn’t quite have the underlying shooting stats of Coutinho or Firmino but they aren’t half bad that’s for sure.  Played 90 minutes in the EFL cup last night so seems to have got through that with no issues.  Surprising he played given the AM injury front

Bournemouth (A)
West Ham (H)
Middlesbrough (A)
Everton (A)
Stoke (H)
Man City (H)

SIGURDSSON

The Swansea CAM/false 9 has a lot of positives.  He practically has all set piece responsibility as well as penalties at the moment it appears.  He’s also the attacking hub of the Swansea side.  His form is great having returned a goal or assist in each of his last 4 games.  These returns are no fluke either as he has the best shots on target stats per minute of any midfielder.  The negatives are that he plays for Swansea.  However their poor defence should force them on the offensive through necessity.  The other negative is that away to one of the best defensive teams in the league in Spurs is hardly an ideal entry point.  He was treated fairly poorly in his spell at Spurs though so he will be extra motivated.

Sunderland (H)
West Brom (A)
Middlesbrough (A)
West Ham (H)

SANCHEZ

The Arsenal midfielder is looking hard to shift as a central striker at the moment for the Arsenal team.  Has been a little inconsistent though.  For £11.3m you’d be expecting a return of a goal or assist in at least 50% of his games.  Sanchez falls narrowly short of this.  However in the 6 times he has returned in 5 of those he’s scored more than 10 FPL points.  Thats the danger of the man.  If you get your captain pick right you will be handsomely rewarded.  The underlying stats are good but he’s certainly doesn’t have the best shooting stats.  Like Walcott recent games have also seen a big drop off

West Ham (A)
Stoke (H)
Everton (A)
Man City (A)
West Brom (H)
Crystal Palace (H)

MCAULEY

The WBA central defender is the top goal scoring defender and it’s easy to see why.  He’s lethal at set pieces.  That top goal scoring position is normally reserved for the £6.0m plus defensive club.  McAuley though is only £4.8m.  WBA have disappointed though on the clean sheet front only claiming 3 this season and 1 in the last 10.

Watford (H)
Chelsea (A)
Swansea (H)
Man Utd (H)
Arsenal (A)
Southampton (A)

THE SINKING SHIPS

These are the 5 most transferred out players so far in the gameweek. As I said in the bandwagons section, I was concerned my stats table had become a little cluttered and unwieldy and hard to read so I’ve replaced it with a simplified version. The headings are self explanatory. The fixt ease column shows the easeiness ranking of the next 6/3 fixtures. COUTINHO

Last night Klopp announced that the Liverpool midfielder would be out for 5 weeks with an ankle injury and even before that there were a huge amount of transfers out.  I suspect Liverpool will bring in either Origi or Sturridge to lead the line.  Sturridge still doesn’t appear ready fitness wise although that will become more clear later in the week.  It does mean though that Firmino won’t be a striker but will probably shift to the left of a front 3 which probably diminishes his appeal somewhat.  You may find my article on Coutinho replacements useful.  Here’s the link

LUKAKU

It’s a case of “what have you done for me lately?” for the Everton striker and FPL managers.  3 games with no return including a home game against Swansea is not going to win you friends.  It doesn’t matter that this followed 4 games of consecutive returns.  Unfortunately having Man Utd, Arsenal and Liverpool in the next 4 makes now a decent point to jump ship. The fact that his recent underlying shooting stats have fallen off a cliff also doesn’t help the holding case.  If you are holding it’s because you know what a streaky player he is and hope a run of returns is around the corner

Watford (A)
Arsenal (H)
Liverpool (H)

GUNDOGAN

It seemed to good to be true.  A £5.6m Man City mid who had that Ramsey like ability to get forward into the box at the right time in the 4-1-4-1 formation Guardiola was using at the time.  Unfortunately enter a 2 goal Yaya Toure who although playing further forward at the moment does make it hard for Gundogan to get in the side.  The situation isn’t helped by the fact that Yaya isn’t in the Champions League squad so can’t play there and that Man City have so many fixtures meaning rotation will be inevitable.  Home to Chelsea is also a good time to show someone the exit door

Arsenal (H)

STERLING

It’s not a pretty picture for the Man City LWM.  No returns in the last 5.  Didn’t play in GW12 and subbed before the hour mark in GW13. Add to that a yellow flag on the FPL site and Chelsea as the next opponent and you’ve got a recipe for sales en masse.  Some of the underlying stats give some hope but it’s pretty telling that his points per match are the same as Gundogan’s above

Arsenal (H)

STONES

There are alot of stats which suggest that Man City are one of the best defensive sides in the premier league.  Unfortunately clean sheets isn’t one of them and that’s the only one that really counts for FPL managers.  The attraction of Stones is that while Chelsea’s cheapest reliable secure gametime defender is £6.1m David Luiz, Spurs’ is £5.7m Vertonghen and Arsenal’s is £5.9m Monreal,  Stones is only £5.0m.  Now it’s true that Liverpool and Man Utd also have some defenders in that price bracket but it’s just impossible to believe Man City won’t drastically improve the clean sheet situation as the season goes on given the good underlying stats.  The problem is exacerbated by the fact that Stones has missed the last 2 premier league matches through rotation and that it appears Kolarov is a CB option in home games against the lesser ranked sides due to his passing. None of that is good and it means that with value comes gametime risk and the need for patience.  If you’re going to ditch him though home to Chelsea is the time to do it
