fantasy premier league gameweek 5 player picks by Rob Reid (the FPL Vet)

Hi and welcome to my fantasy premier league Gameweek 5 Player Picks. For each gameweek, I’ll be picking out 3 players in distinct player selection categories.

One Banker – this will take form and the fixture ease schedule into account and is a player who I think is a must for the next few gameweeks and should provide a steady stream of points.

One Ace – a player who I think has a good chance of scoring big this week. I’ll take form, this weeks fixtures and the bookies odds into account here.

One Joker – a player who is a bit of punt but I think may surprise a few people. Might be a low ownership player, someone coming back from injury or just a bit of a gut feeling on my part – there will be no evidence base on this one!

I’ll keep a tally each week of how things are going – I’ll analyse the Banker over 4 GWs, the other 2 will just be on a weekly basis. Wish me luck and here goes!

Gameweek 4 Review

GW1 Banker – Fraser Forster (Southampton)

GW1 – 6 points
GW2 – 3 points
GW3 – 11 points
GW4 – 1 point (2 goals conceded) – disappointing final banker week for Forster as the Saints were outclassed by Watford. It’s fair to say that Southampton haven’t been as convincing in defence as we’d hoped pre-season and they’re certainly struggling up front as well.

GW2 Banker- Romelu Lukaku (Man U)

GW2 – 6 points (1 goal)
GW3 – 0 points (1 missed penalty)
GW4 – 6 points (1 goal) – back on form this week, though he should have buried a great chance at the end of the second. Scored in the UCL this week as well so still looks a nice captain pick.

GW3 Banker – Christian Eriksen

GW3 – 3 points (midfield clean sheet)
GW4 – 8 points (1 goal, midfield clean sheet) – now returned in 3 out of 4 GWs continuing his good start to the season. A prime home fixture is next against struggling Swansea – managers will be looking for some big points here to back up his brilliant stats.

GW4 Banker – Craig Dawson

GW4 – 1 point (2 goals conceded) – Brighton surprised many including Tony Pulis with a fine display in GW4 so no returns for the WBA defence as a result. West Ham at home next for The Baggies – plenty of clean sheet potential here though the Hammers looked a better attacking prospect on Monday night. Early clean sheet odds are 8/5 for The Baggies.

Ace – Alexandre Lacazette – 6 points (1 goal)

Overshadowed by Welbeck’s exploits, but it was still a decent display, returning a goal for Arsenal’s record signing. Tough fixture next away to Chelsea.

Joker – Eden Hazard – 1 point

Conte only allowed him 12 minutes off the bench after Leicester found their way back into the match. Definitely still on the watchlist for future weeks though based on his history.

Gameweek 5 Picks

Banker – Ben Davies (Spurs £5.7 – SWA)

Now the game’s leading points scorer, the Welshman looks set to continue his good run against his former club Swansea. With Danny Rose’s comeback date still somewhat hazy, Davies looks set for a run in a team that loves attacking wing-backs. He is certainly profiting at the moment, adding 2 assists last week to the goal he scored in GW1. Form and fixtures certainly look primed for a steady stream of points over the next 4 weeks. The only slight element of doubt is whether UCL rotation may cause Poch to rest his key assets for what look easier EPL fixtures on paper – he played against Dortmund this week so we’ll see.

Ace – Harry Kane (Spurs £12.4m – SWA)

With the standout fixture this week, Spurs certainly dominate the GW5 player picks for me. First up some humble pie eating from yours truly – I sold Kane last week to try and start re-balancing my midfield this week. Let’s say I’m regretting it a little now as he broke his duck against Everton, even if his first goal was a bit fortuitous. He’s also followed this up with 2 more in the UCL this week. It’s the struggling Swans at Wembley next for Hurri-Kane – the visitors looked decidedly dodgy at the back against Newcastle last Sunday, with Fabianski to thank for keeping the damage down to 1 goal. That’s also not to mention the ludicrous number of shots Southampton had against them in GW1. All in all, the stats point to a Kane explosion. Eriksen and Alli also look sound investments as well mind. Take your pick folks!

Joker – Davy Propper (Brighton £5.5m – bou)

For my punt, I’m dipping into the Friday night fixture. It was Pascal GroB who stood out last weekend as he got The Seagulls off the mark, but I liked the look of the Dutchman in that game and also the week before when he scored twice against Bulgaria, showing he knows where the net is. He reached double figures for goals in his first season at PSV and while I don’t expect him to do the same for Brighton, he could be a good short term, cheapie pre-wildcard option with nice fixtures this week and next. If nothing else it adds some interest to the Friday night game!

That’s it from me on Player Picks this week. Good luck everyone!
