Fantasy Premier League, Player Rankings

Here’s the 2nd part of the “ones to watch” defensive options. We look at the cheap home and away rotation options and the bargain basement defensive options for GW3. We cover the GKs and the defenders

The cheap rotations

Here’s my latest thoughts on those players for rotation where you pick teams so you will always have someone playing at home.  Statistically more clean sheets occur at home than away

Stoke and Swansea: Wilson (£4.5m) and N Taylor (£4.5m) plus GK Begovic (£5.0m) and GK Fabianski (£4.5m)

A clean sheet for Swansea against Burnley was anything but convincing and Stoke have also been anything but in their 2 games.  However both have reasonable records from last season and fantastic  fixtures coming up.  There’s also good value in both although Wilson depends on Huth not regaining his place otherwise £5.0m Bardsley is the best option.  Bardsley faces a late fitness test for GW3

Stoke had 7 home clean sheets and Swansea 6 home clean sheets last season.  Home clean sheets this season to date:  Stoke 0  Swansea 1

Next 10 fixtures:  WBA H, Leicester H, Southampton H, Newcastle H, Newcastle H, Swansea H, Leicester H, West Ham H, Arsenal H,  Burnley H

Potential clean sheets in the next 10:  5

Burnley and Hull: Duff (£4.0m) and Robertson (£4.5m) plus GK Heaton £4.5m and GK McGregor (£5.0m)

With Chester suspended after his sending off new LB Robertson becomes an option.  Chester may also have problems with his place now that Michael Dawson has signed for Hull. Hard to assess Burnleys home defensive potential with Chelsea being their only opposition to date.

Burnley had 11 Championship home clean sheets last season. Hull had 8 home clean sheets.  Home clean sheets this season to date:  Burnley 0 Hull 0

Next 10 fixtures:  Villa A, West Ham H, Sunderland H, WBA A, Palace H, West Ham H, Everton H, Southampton H, Hull H, Stoke A

Potential clean sheets in the next 10:  4

Aston Villa and WBA: Vlaar (£4.5m) and Pocognoli (£4.5m) plus GK Guzan (£4.5m) and GK Foster (£4.5m)

2 clean sheets in 2 games for Villa and an impressive clean sheet at Saints for WBA is a good start for both teams.  Villa have a new experienced defence although they did concede a number of chances to Newcastle.  WBA set out very defensively against Saints and also were unlucky against Sunderland in GW1.  Vlaar and Pocognoli are both injury doubts.  Hutton at £4.1m is the cheaper version than Vlaar and Wisdom at £4.0m for WBA although he faces competition when Gamboa is ready to play.  Fixtures are mixed.

Aston Villa and WBA both had 4 home clean sheets last season.  Home clean sheets this season to date:  Aston Villa 1 WBA 0

Next 10 fixtures:  Hull H, Everton H, Arsenal H, Burnley H, Man City H, Man Utd H, C Palace H, Spurs H, Newcastle H, Southampton H

Potential clean sheets in next 10:  3

Sunderland and Newcastle: Van Aanholt (£4.5m) and Coloccini (£4.5m) plus GK Mannone (£4.5m) and GK Krul (£4.5m)

Sunderland despite having no clean sheets to date performed well defensively against Man Utd.  Newcastle are in the same position but have defended well for their 1 clean sheet away to Villa. The rotation works perfectly all season and so far both have looked an effective pair.  Dummett at £4.0m is the cheaper option for Newcastle but won’t get the bonus points

Newcastle and Sunderland had 6 clean sheets each last season.  Home clean sheets this season to date:  Sunderland 0 Newcastle 0

Next 10 fixtures:  Palace H, Spurs H, Hull A, Swansea H, Stoke H, Leicester H, Spurs A, Palace A, Everton H,  QPR H

Potential clean sheets in the next 10: 3

Palace and QPR: Ward (£5.0m) and Ferdinand (£4.5m) plus GK Speroni (£5.0m) and GK Green (£4.5m)

Both defences imploded at the weekend and confidence in both teams has to be at a very low ebb at the moment.  Add to that the value isn’t that great on the Palace side after last season.  In theory both teams should be good defensive bets but Palace have lost Pulis and QPR have started poorly.  Good fixtures though if they can turn it around.

Palace had 8 home clean sheets last season. QPR had 10 in the Championship.  Home clean sheets this season to date:  Palace 0  QPR 0

Next 10 fixtures:  Sunderland H, Burnley H, Stoke H, Leicester H, Hull A, Chelsea A, Villa H, Sunderland H, Man City H, Newcastle A

Potential clean sheets in the next 10:  3

The bargain basement options

Hutton £4.1m

A good cheap option who seems gametime secure at the moment in a Villa team who’ve started well defensively.  Doesn’t have a great attacking record despite getting forward but you can’t have everything at this price.

Dummett £4.0m

Seems to have the LB position after being 2nd to it in preseason.  Newcastle have looked ok defensively so far

Moore £4.0m

Not a bad defensive performance at Chelsea from the Leicester team but hard to assess until we see some lower placed opposition. Has little attacking potential

Duff£4.0m

The cheapie Burnley CB is good value but still Burnleys home defence needs assessing having only played Chelsea at home to date.

Those with gametime doubts:

Wisdom – has Gamboa in his shadow

Bruce – Dawson joining should be the end even in 3-5-2
