fantasy premier league GW 21 – my imaginary wildcard

Fantasy Premier League

With the January wildcard now in play I thought everyone might appreciate a few thoughts on an imaginary wildcard article earier in the week than normal to help with decisions on your team.

Personally I’m not using my wildcard until Aguero is back.  I don’t fancy an 8 point hit trying to squeeze him in for the first week or waiting until I can get him back over a few weeks and watching him score a number of goals in the process.  However if you feel that you do need to use your wildcard then here’s how I would use it.  By the way this is spending the full amount and doesn’t set aside any money for Aguero or put in a straight swap such as RVP.  I’ve also done it to be careful with proceeds in anticipation of Aguero making cash tight.

Here’s the team:

Goalkeeper

I’ve gone for the Pulis installed WBA GK Foster with his deputy Myhill as his reserve.  6 clean sheets so far but I can see Pulis improving this markedly especially with what are reasonable fixtures on the horizon.

Defence

Chelsea and Southampton in my mind (despite the Spurs debacle) are still the best defensive teams with 9 clean sheets each so I’ve gone for Terry and Alderweireld to save cash.  Both teams easily have the best underlying stats.

I’ve gone for Debuchy from Arsenal as despite only coming up with 5 clean sheets Arsenal  still have the stats to suggest things will improve especially with Koscielny back (despite his performance against Southampton) and the likelihood of another CB/CDM coming into the team in the transfer window.  Debuchy is excellent value at £5.2m.  The next 2 are cheap filler places in Stoke’s Cameron and Sunderlands John O’Shea.  Stoke have reasonable fixtures over a longer period and good underlying defensive stats.  Cameron is the cheap player at £4.2m.  Sunderland don’t have the underlying stats but have the defensive mettle to have gained 7 clean sheets.  The same as Man City.  O’Shea is the pick by process of elimination as the FBs are uncertain and Wes Brown is a little unpredictable to say the least.

Midfield and Forwards

The essentials

Hazard and Sanchez are long term holds with the returns and underlying stats to justify being fixture proof.  Costa is a point of great debate but still has good returns and great underlying stats but to me as the focal point of the Chelsea attack he remains an essential pick.  Kane also due to his current form.

The remaining attackers – fixtures and form

Ideally with any player you would want fixtures, form, overall season consistency  (% of games returning a goal or assist) and underlying stats but not always possible unfortunately.

Sterling who is a fixture play and a midfielder playing as a striker.  Even if his form of 1 goal and 1 assist in his last 6 is questionable form.  45% consistency could be better for the price. His underlying stats are good though.

Ings is virtually entirely a fixture play.  Ings has QPR and Crystal Palace at home next and some form with a goal and an assist in his last 2.  No underlying shooting or creating chances stats isn’t ideal though. 41% consistency is questionable but you can’t ask for too much at £5.6m

Silva has good form  with 4 goals and 1 assist in his last 4 games but certainly not good fixtures although City have the fire power with Dzeko and Aguero returning to score against anyone.  43% consistency at this price is very questionable  so you’re going with form and hoping that strikers are fit isn’t going to drastically change things.  Underlying stats have improved recently but over the whole season are pretty ordinary.

Siggy was a questionable one especially with Bony leaving for ACON and I mulled over Chadli instead.  The fixtures certainly are mixed at best and although Siggys form isn’t bad with 2 goals in his last 3 he is prone to spells of no returns.  He also has no underlying stats and is reliant on his CAM positioning and set pieces.

Hope that gives you some food for thought.
