fantasy premier league GW17 player picks by Rob Reid (the FPL Vet)

Hi and welcome to Gameweek 17 Player Picks. For each gameweek, I’ll be picking out 3 players in distinct player selection categories.

Player categories

One Banker – this will take form and the fixture ease schedule into account and is a player who I think is a must for the next few gameweeks and should provide a steady stream of points.

One Ace – a player who I think has a good chance of scoring big this week. I’ll take form, this weeks fixtures and the bookies odds into account here.

One Joker – a player who is a bit of punt but I think may surprise a few people. Might be a low ownership player, someone coming back from injury or just a bit of a gut feeling on my part – there will be no evidence base on this one!

I’ll keep a tally each week of how things are going – I’ll analyse the Banker over 4 GWs, the other 2 will just be on a weekly basis. Wish me luck and here goes!

Gameweek 16 Review

GW13 Banker – Leroy Sane

GW13 – 1 point (yellow card)
GW14 – 0 points (didn’t play)
GW15 – 2 points
GW16 – 2 points – a thoroughly disappointing banker stint for the player who the game’s leading score when he was picked in GW13. Surely time to sell now if you own him.

GW14 Banker – Cesar Azpilicueta

GW14 – 0 points (didn’t play)
GW15 – 2 points (1 goal conceded)
GW16 – 2 points (1 goal conceded) – an abject performance from Chelsea after a tough midweek UCL fixture. Again, it’s been disappointing from their defence so far at the start of a good run of fixtures.

GW15 Banker – Jonjoe Kenny

GW15 – 5 points (clean sheet, yellow card)
GW16 – 2 points (1 goal conceded) – no returns expected away at Anfield, but a good performance and 2 nice games now away to Newcastle and home to Swansea.

GW16 Banker – Eden Hazard

GW16 – 2 points – blanked away to West Ham letting down managers who transferred him in. Stats are still good so would expect him to pick up again soon.

GW16 Ace – Harry Kane

– 12 points (2 goals, 2 bonus points) – class is permanent and he rewarded the many managers who kept faith in him this week with a double digit haul (and should have had more!) Looks a good captain pick again home to Brighton this week.

GW16 Joker – Marc Albrighton

5 points (1 assist) – a nice return for the winger, he’s good value in the higher end of the budget range with 3 returns in his last 4.

Gameweek 17 Picks

Banker – David De Gea (Man Utd £5.8m) – BOU

United now embark on a nice run of fixtures and De Gea is the most secure way into their defence over the festive period. He’s got huge ownership for a keeper at over 40% so clean sheets hurt if you haven’t got The Red Devils covered. A good strategy could be to buy him now and sell him for Lloris in GW22 when United travel to Goodison and Spurs have a DGW. In the meantine, I suspect the points will continue to flow for the Spaniard.

Ace – Mo Salah (Liverpool £9.9m) – WBA

When is this guy going to stop returning?! Another goal this week makes it 8 consecutive returns with 13 goals, 4 assists and 15 bonus points for the season. Struggling West Brom visit Anfield on Wednesday, I expect another Reds goal-fest with the Egyptian at the fore.

Joker – Heung Min Son (Spurs £7.9m) – BRI

2 goals and 2 assists in the last 2 GWs has bought him firmly onto our radars again as a lower budget premium midfielder with just 2.6% ownership. Brighton have shipped 7 goals in their last 2 games and I think will struggle at Wembley this week. Son’s form does correlate a little with Poch’s choice of system, but he has pace to burn and knows where the net is so I wouldn’t bet against another good return this week.

That’s it from me on Player Picks – best of luck this week everyone.
