Hi and welcome to Gameweek 23 Player Picks. For each gameweek, I’ll be picking out 3 players in distinct player selection categories.

One Banker – this will take form and the fixture ease schedule into account and is a player who I think is a must for the next few gameweeks and should provide a steady stream of points.

One Ace – a player who I think has a good chance of scoring big this week. I’ll take form, this weeks fixtures and the bookies odds into account here.

One Joker – a player who is a bit of punt but I think may surprise a few people. Might be a low ownership player, someone coming back from injury or just a bit of a gut feeling on my part – there will be no evidence base on this one!

I’ll keep a tally each week of how things are going – I’ll analyse the Banker over 4 GWs, the other 2 will just be on a weekly basis. I’m following up my GW21 picks as well after my shortened GW22 article. Wish me luck and here goes!

Gameweeks 21 & 22 Review

GW18 Banker – Nicolas Otamendi

GW18 – 1 point (1 goal conceded, yellow card)
GW19 – 7 points (clean sheet, 1 bonus point)

GW20 – 8 points (clean sheet, 2 bonus points)

GW21 – 8 points (clean sheet, 2 bonus points) Another strong outing, hoovering 2 more bonus points to finish his banker stint. The cheaper John Stones is now fit and may challenge for a place, though with Kompany’s ongoing injury troubles ‘The General’ may well find his place secure.

GW19 Banker – Laurent Depoitre

GW19 – 9 points (1 goal, 3 bonus points)

GW20 – 1 point

GW21 – 2 points

GW22 – 1 point – Gametime is the worry here as Wagner seems intent on rotating his attacking players. Quaner now looks the better value at £0.9m cheaper but is an injury doubt for GW23.

GW20 Banker – Mo Salah

GW20 – 9 points

GW21 – 14 points (2 goals, 2 bonus points)

GW22 – injured – missed the away win at Burnley after banking a double figure haul against Leicester. Seems to be winning the race to be fit for City this weekend and may prove a tough buy back for those who sold him for his injury with his price not having budged despite 10% of all managers selling him!

GW21 Banker – Marcos Alonso

GW21 – 6 points (clean sheet)

GW22 – 7 points (1 goal, 2 goals conceded) – another attacking return for ‘Goal-Alonso’ as he continues to offer a great threat, effectively playing as winger. A great out of position pick, even at his price.

GW22 Banker – Harry Kane

GW22 – 3 points – appearance points only in the double left many managers frustrated. This was compounded by him banging in 2 goals in the FA Cup the week after. A tricky fixture next as a stubborn Everton team visit Wembley.

GW 21 Other Picks

Ace – Roberto Firmino – 2 points.

Disappointing returns over the last 2 weeks for the Brazilian. Talk of a possible ban after an FA Cup incident with Mason Holgate seems to have gone quiet. Still a decent option in the troublesome mid-price striker range.

Joker – Christian Atsu – 3 points.

A midfield clean sheet only in a scrappy 0-0 draw and blanked against Stoke the following week. Nice fixture at home to toiling Swansea this week.

GW22 Other Picks

Ace – Heung-Min Son – 12 points

(1 midfield clean sheet, 1 goal, 2 bonus points, x 2 appearance points for 2 fixtures) – A productive week for the South Korean, who in the end would have been a good captain option for the double. Now boasts 5 goals and 4 assists in the last 7 weeks.

Joker – Manuel Lanzini – 6 points

(1 assist, 1 yellow card, x2 appearance points for 2 fixtures) – 6 points arguably constitutes a disappointing return across a double gameweek. The assist for Obiang’s piledriver would have probably scored 0.01 on the xA scale though was busier in the first game.

Gameweek 23 Picks

Banker – Matthew Ryan (BRI £4.5m) – wba

It’s a key period of fixtures for The Seagulls with Chelsea’s visit to the AMEX next week being their only tricky fixture until they play Arsenal in GW29. It’s key they pick up points through this period as they have a horror set of 4 fixtures to finish the season. They therefore have to get close to 40 points before GW35 or they could get sucked into the relegation dogfight. A visit to struggling West Brom looks a good fixture for Hughton’s men and keeper Ryan has done well with 3 clean sheets, 5 save points and 3 bonus points in the last 5 fixtures.

Ace – Jessie Lingard (MAN £6.3m) – STO

A prime fixture against manager-less Stoke for the in-form attacking midfielder. He’s bagged 4 goals and an assist in his last 5 and another goal in the FA Cup last weekend. He’s a nicely priced route into the United midfield, so it’s no surprise his ownership his climbed to nearly 16% over the last 2 weeks. The only question mark I guess is whether he can keep his place long term in an ultra-competitive United midfield unit; 8 starts in the last 9 suggests he could.

Joker – Richarlison (WAT £6.4) – SOU

The Brazilian was the value for money star of early season, but his form has dropped off a little of late. No goals and only 3 assists since GW12 which has co-incided with Watford slowly sliding down the table. Southampton aren’t in great shakes themselves though, and a home fixture against the Saints could be the week Richarlison jump-starts his and The Hornets season again.

That’s it from me on Player Picks. Good luck this week everyone!
