FANTASY PREMIER LEAGUE GW24 MIDFIELDER TIPS – PLAYER RANKINGS

First it’s important to remember that each player is ranked as a transfer target for this week. So while we generally look at fixtures form and underlying stats a player who’s away to Man City is going to be ranked lower than someone home to Huddersfield for example. If possible a transfer should have a good fixture first up.

Firstly there’s a table of stats. Then there’s a bit of brief commentary on each player and their next 6 fixtures.

This is the 2nd player rankings article. There’s a defenders player rankings article . You may also find it interesting to see who the 10 top FPL managers I follow have, who the bandwagons are

Salah

Another double figure FPL point haul with his goal and assist v Man City to make it 10 for the season.  He’s now up to 18 goals and 8 assists.  Continues to prosper in the advanced position on the right and with Liverpool in great goal scoring form and good short term fixtures he’s a difficult player not to own.

Swansea (A)
Huddersfield (A)
Spurs (H)
Southampton (A)
West Ham (H)
Newcastle (H)

Sterling

Sterling is the midfield master of the tap in with 9 of his 14 goals coming from either in or just outside the 6 yard box.  Has an uncanny knack for being in the right place in the right time.  Great 2 next fixtures

Newcastle (H)
West Brom (H)
Burnley (A)
Leicester (H)
Arsenal (A)
Chelsea (H)

Mane

Mane should be able to make the LW position his own now with Coutinho gone.  Has gone under the radar somewhat but 6 goals and 4 assists in 13 starts is nothing to be sniffed at.  He’s returned a goal or assist in 8 of those 13 games and has great underlying stats to back it up.

The negatives are an inability to get bonus points which has only seen him earn 6 with the resulting lack of double figure FPL hauls at 2.

Swansea (A)
Huddersfield (A)
Spurs (H)
Southampton (A)
West Ham (H)
Newcastle (H)

Arnautovic

Playing as a striker, his goal and 2 assists v Huddersfield made it 6 goals and 3 assists in his last 7 matches which is incredible form.  He’s been playing striker in most of those games and has great underlying stats to back up the returns.  The fact that all 3 of the out and out strikers at the club have transfer rumours surrounding them helps the feeling that he could hold the position

Bournemouth (H)
Crystal Palace (H)
Brighton (A)
Watford (H)
Liverpool (A)
Swansea (A)

De Bruyne

Probably the most certain player to be on the team sheet of the attacking players which is something to say from Pep’s Man City team which appears to be on a mission to win everything.

In addition to that he has been a consistent returner getting a goal or assist in 13/23 games which is 56% in addition to 6 double figure FPL point hauls helped by his ability to win bonus points.

The only negative are his underlying stats which are pretty ordinary especially in the goal threat department.  However he has shown an ability in the past to over perform them.

Has the majority of set pieces.

 Newcastle (H)
West Brom (H)
Burnley (A)
Leicester (H)
Arsenal (A)
Chelsea (H)

Sane

After starting the season on fire he had a midseason slump but seems to have come out of it to some degree.  7 goals and 9 assists in 16 starts plus 5 as sub is no mean return.  He’s also returned in over 50% of his games.

His underlying stats are good too.  He’s just a bit of an unpredictable own and plays a little wider than you like although that doesn’t seem to inhibit Sterling.

Doesn’t have the gametime security of DeBruyne but has started 5 of the last 6 including 90 minutes in the last 3

Newcastle (H)
West Brom (H)
Burnley (A)
Leicester (H)
Arsenal (A)
Chelsea (H)

Hazard

GW23 was another one of those woefully ineffiective performances you seem to get from Hazard from time to time.  That makes a goal or assist in 7 of his 16 games which is not on for the price.  He has the ability to obtain bonus points like no other midfielder which has helped his returns but he’s not convincing.  Has penalty duties which is a big bonus.

This is more about excellent fixtures and his history in the premier league

Brighton (A)
Bournemouth (H)
Watford (A)
West Brom (H)
Man Utd (A)
Man City (A)

Son HM

The only reason Son is so low in the rankings is the fixtures coming up are definitely tricky.  He has that ability to find the ball in or around the 6 yard box similar in some ways to Sterling.  3 of his 8 goals have come from in or very close to the 6 yard box.  It’s now 8 goals and 5 assists from 16 starts and 6 sub appearances.

More importantly he’s started the last 9 with 90 minutes in the last 3.  In some ways his starts have come from Poch changing to a back 4 after after the Alderweireld injury.  However, given Son’s form it’s hard to see that he could be dropped even if Poch reverts to a back 3.

Southampton (A)
Man Utd (H)
Liverpool (A)
Arsenal (H)
Crystal Palace (A)
Huddersfield (H)

Lingard

The most transferred in player in the game last week it was a deeply disappointing performance of niggly fouls and giving the ball away.  However even in this poor form he still should have had returns from assists that weren’t finished off.  However it’s still 7 goals plus 2 assists in his last 10 games where only 1 has been a sub appearance.  He also has the underlying stats to back this up as being no fluke

The main negatives are sustainability and the potential signing of Sanchez.  Lingard is performing at a level way beyond anything previous and it’s just whether that will continue.  At this stage it’s hard to know whether Sanchez will join United let alone any Lingard effect but it is a watchout

Burnley (A)
Spurs (A)
Huddersfield (H)
Newcastle (A)
Chelsea (H)
Crystal Palace (A)

Mahrez

7 goals and 10 assists this season returning in nearly 2 of every 3 games is some achievement. While he hasn’t been outstanding on the bonus front he’s been ok even if a little average on the explosive front with only 3 double figure FPL point hauls.

The watchout are his underlying stats which are pretty ordinary.  However he has shown he can significantly out perform them as he did in Leicesters title winning year.  He’s also shown he can underperform them so you go with Mahrez with that uncertainty.

What he does have in addition to the positives above is alot of set piece responsibility and great fixtures

Watford (H)
Everton (A)
Swansea (H)
Man City (A)
Stoke (H)
Bournemouth (H)

Who’s not on the list

Firstly I try and keep the list to 10 so it’s impossible to capture everyone.  Here were some others under consideration

Sanchez – transfer uncertainty

D Silva – gametime uncertainty due to personal issues

Martial – just needs a bit more gametime security

Ramsey – just coming back from injury

Richarlison – form stuttering a little

Ozil – injury
