Arnautovic

Arnautovic is the form West Ham player at the moment. 6 goals and an 3 assists in his last 7 games have mainly come playing as striker. His underlying stats are good showing this spell is no fluke.  West Ham’s designated strikers Carroll, Sakho and Chicharito all have either injury, form or manager lack of confidence or a mixture of some/all.

Brighton (A)
Watford (H)
Liverpool (A)
Swansea (A)

Salah

I can only imagine that the active FPL managers who are buying him are those that sold him as a sacrifice for the DGW22.  Given the form of the guy with 18 goals and 8 assists in 20 starts and 2 sub appearances it’s mind boggling to think it could be anything else.

Fantastic underlying stats and Liverpool’s fixtures are ok as well.

Huddersfield (A)
Spurs (H)
Southampton (A)
West Ham (H)
Newcastle (H)

Firmino

He’s on some run with 5 goals and 3 assists in his last 5 starts.

There are some watchouts though.  His recent form has improved his consistency return rate although he is still returning a goal or assist in under 50% of his games having had 5 consecutive blanks earlier in the season.  His underlying stats are fairly ordinary and he is seignificantly over performing them.  He has shown the ability to over perform in the past but not to this extent.  Even in this good run the underlying stats are still hit and miss.  It’s whether you think these facts outway the form and good fixtures plus the excellent team form at the moment.

Son HM

A goal and an assist on the weekend v Everton takes him to 8 goals and 5 assists for the season in 16 games plus 6 assists.  He’s also returned a goal or assist in 50% of those starts which is good consistency.

What’s more his underlying stats are absolutely excellent overall if delivered in a little patchy way.  He also has the Sterling type ability to find tap ins as you’ll see from his goal v Everton.

The only doubt in the past has been gametime mainly due to the 3-4-2-1 formation.  However he’s started the last 9 including 90 minutes in the last 3.  It’s hard to imagine, even if Poch were to change formation, seeing him being dropped in this current vein of form.

The only negative is the tricky fixtures and whether you feel your FPL team can accommodate Kane and Son HM given the tricky fixtures coming up.

Southampton (A)
Man Utd (H)
Liverpool (A)
Arsenal (H)
Crystal Palace (A)
Huddersfield (H)

J Ayew

The value in midfield has seen a constant hunt for cheap strikers who will hold their starting position in the team in case needed as sub.  That search has seen some treasure unearthed only later to be revealed as fools gold.

The Swansea forward is the latest to come into favour after 4 90 minute starts that have seen 2 goals scored.

Given the lack of gametime consistency in this price bracket, gametime, rather than an expectation of returns, should be the focus.  In that time he seems to either have been playing as 1 of a pair of strikers or as a left sided midfielder.  All the fixtures have seen some issues with Bony and Abraham who are the natural strikers for the position so whether he can withstand them remains to be seen

Leicester (A)

West Ham (H)

Morata

I have been defending Morata on the basis of his underlying stats and on the fact that at least he’s getting chances but there was no doubt that he was truly awful, along with the entire Chelsea team, v Leicester.

It’s now 1 goal and 1 assist in his last 5 starts which is causing the sales as well as his much publicised misses againsr Arsenal.

If you were looking for positives you would say that his underlying stats before the Leicester game were generally very good and he has scored 10 goals and 4 assists in 17 starts and 4 sub appearances which is not bad at all.  9 games with a goal or assist isn’t too bad consistency wise.  The next 4 fixtures are also very very good.

Brighton (A)
Bournemouth (H)
Watford (A)
West Brom (H)
Man Utd (A)
Man City (A)

Richarlison

After the 2nd consecutive blank it’s now 2 assists in his last 5.  Over the season it’s 5 goals and 8 assists in 21 games plus 1 as sub.  He has been a reasonably consistent returner getting a goal or assist in 12 of those games.  However an inability to get bonus points has only seen 2 double figure FPL point hauls and a pretty poor overall return.

His underlying stats have been good and continued in that vein and his advanced position does give him the opportunity for returns.    He has though significantly underperformed them so you either say he’s unlucky or a poor finisher.  Unfortunately there’s no history to help us make a judgement.  He is still getting chances,t’s whether he can convert them is what you have to decide.  The fixtures are also getting trickier which helps the exit argument.

Stoke (A)
Chelsea (H)
West Ham (A)
Everton (H)
West Brom (H)

Gross

Earlier in the season I thought the Brighton set piece man had been over performing some pretty ordinary underlying stats.  That appears to have now come home to roost as he has 1 goal in his last 9 starts and 2 sub appearances.

His underlying stats still don’t help and show neglible goal threat.  Even with set pieces his assist based stats offer little hope.  A game against Chelsea is also a good exit point

Chelsea (H)
Southampton (A)
West Ham (H)
Stoke (A)
Swansea (H)
Arsenal (H)

Calvert Lewin

There’s little point in me going into detail about his returns.  This is about loss of gametime with new expensive striker signing Cenk Tosun appearing on the scene.  Calvert Lewin hasn’t started the last 2 and there were even signs that maybe Niasse was starting to edge ahead in the pecking order

West Brom (H)
Leicester (H)
Arsenal (A)
Crystal Palace (H)
Watford (A)
Burnley (A)

Hazard

If Morata was terrible against Leicester then Hazard unfortunately wasn’t much better and was only painful for 57 minutes for his owners.  However whether it be in underlying stats or returns he’s just not the most consistent fellow.  It’s 6 goals and 4 assists in 15 starts and he’s returned in 7 of those games which is under the minimum 50% threshold for the price.  He can score big and has 4 double figure FPL point hauls in those 7 but you do have to bear with the blanks and droughts.  He’s currently in one of those now with 1 goal and 1 assist in his last 7.

What’s more is his diminishing minutes.  Some may have been due to preserving him for other games but to not get to 80 minutes in 6 of your 15 starts is not good at all.

If you’re sticking or getting Hazard it’s because of his pedigree, ability to score big, pens and fixtures.  It’s not predictability and consistency.
