I’ve tried to balance out attacking potential vs the premium price you pay for that player rather than just going for the attacking player automatically.     I’ve put together a table of stats with a key below it to rank the 10 best defenders.  Below that I’ve put some narrative on each player plus their next 6 fixtures.   I’ll also try and talk about the GK option.

Key:

Last 5 games:  Clean sheets in the last 5 fixtures

Mins per FPL point:  How long it takes a player to earn an FPL point.  The lower the better obviously

Goals/Assist;  Goals/Assists so far in the season

CS – H/A:  The clean sheets so far this season.  Home/Away

Fixture ease:  The easiness of the next 6/(3) fixtures.  Done from an attacking point of view but does give an indication of fixture ease

Top 10 FPL managers own:  How many of the 10 top FPL managers I follow have the player in the team (In brackets is the amount of players from that team in the FPL managers teams)

 Bertrand

The Southampton LB at £5.7m is a little cheaper and with slightly better underlying attacking stats than Clyne so I’ve gone with Bertrand as the best Southampton defensive option.  However at a whole £1.0m cheaper comes CB Alderweireld assuming he starts after coming back from injury.  He should do and would mean a big saving for those who need to.  GK Forster is not bad value at £5.6m.  GW33 and DGW34 neutral

Chelsea (A)
Burnley (H)
Everton (A)
Hull (H)
GW33 Stoke (A)
Spurs (H)

Ivanovic

The Chelseea CB is the best attacking defender in the league this season without question.  He’s also the most expensive at £7.5m.  No one has scored more goals and only 3 players have got more assists.  The Chelsea defence with Southampton are the 2 best defences in the league.  Thats despite Chelsea looking incredibly vulnerable at set pieces against PSG last night.  Only Ivanovic and Terry seem nailed on in defence.  Zouma is an interesting prospect at £4.7m and it will be interesting to see if he holds his place against Southampton now that Matic will be taking his midfield place.  GK Courtois is too expensive for me being the 2nd most expensive GK but the 15th on points scored.  DGW34 and no blank in GW33 makes Chelsea essential representation in defence.

Southampton (H)
Hull (A)
Stoke (H)
QPR (A)
Man Utd (H)
GW34 Arsenal (A)
GW34 Leicester (A)

Kompany

The Man City Captain was dropped rather than rested last week after a dressing room punch up with Fernandinho.  Having seen the lack of protection him, Fernando and YYT have given the City CB its hard not to be sympathetic.  (BTW there’s obviously no way I condone settling work place differences through violence!).  Kompany in this rank is about the potential of the City defence to do better given some of the underlying stats.  The problem is price and rotation.  Also if you’re having the standard 1 or 2 premium defenders and then 3 rotating cheapies it’s hard to recommend City over Chelsea and Southampton.  Also no secure or cheap option available.  Hart has similar problems to Courtois although he is 6th in the GK points rank and also £6.1m.  GW33 and DGW34 neutral

Burnley (A)
West Brom (H)
Crystal Palace (A)
Man Utd (A)
GW33 West Ham (H)
Aston Villa (H)

Bellerin

The Arsenal RB is great value at £4.6m.  Even though the Arsenal defence is a little disappointing at 9 clean sheets this season.  However for that price he’s essential.  Ospina is also great value at £4.8m and seems to be holding his place for the moment although he started the season as 2nd so is always going to be at risk of losing the place again.  The big warning for Bellerin is that Debuchy will probably be fit and take Bellerins place for GW33.  That’s Arsenals blank preceeding their potential double in DGW34.  If you want security CB Koscielny at £6.0m is the only choice and even he is injury prone.

West Ham (H)
Newcastle (A)
Liverpool (H)
Burnley (A)
– Gameweek 33 –
Chelsea (H)

Dawson

The WBA CB turned RB under the defensive magician Tony Pulis is in one of only 3 teams with 3 clean sheets in the last 5.  Someone from the WBA team is essential and GK Foster at £4.7m is great value with a £4.0m understudy.  Dawson has great attacking potential for assists and at set pieces in the air.  Neutral as far as GW33 and DGW34 are concerned.

Stoke (H)
Man City (A)
QPR (H)
Leicester (H)
GW33 Crystal Palace (A)
Liverpool (H)

Moreno

With WBA and Southampton, Liverpool are the 3rd team to have had 3 clean sheets in the last 5 games.  Over the season only Southampton and Chelsea have more clean sheets.  The problem coming up is the fixtures.  £6.0m Skrtel looks the most secure pick although I’ve gone for the cheaper £5.2m LWB who’s started 9 of the last 10 games.  GK Mignolet is also good value at £5.2m.  Potentially no GW33 if they can beat Blackburn in the FA Cup replay on Tuesday April 7 and then potentially a DGW34.

Swansea (A)
Man Utd (H)
Arsenal (A)
Newcastle (H)
GW33 Hull (A)  – Potential postponement
West Brom (A)

Dann

At £4.9m he’s a little expensive in my mind for a Palace defender in a team with only 6 clean sheets even with his attacking potential.  So you may want to gamble on Kelly at £4.4m who’s started 8 of the last 9 but with little attacking potential.  GK Speroni is ok value at £4.8m.   Palace do interestingly have some good underlying stats defensively.  Fixtures going forward are ok.  GW33 and DGW34 neutral and ok fixture home to WBA in GW33

QPR (H)
Stoke (A)
Man City (H)
Sunderland (A)
GW33 West Brom (H)
Hull (H)

Naughton

The Swamsea RB is a good price at £4.3m, an incredible 10 clean sheets despite ordinary underlying stats and good fixtures going forward make Naughton a good purchase at the moment.  Add to that a good fixture away to Leicester in GW33 when you’ll need him in your team and it’s a winning combination.  The only question is can they keep bucking the underlying stats.  Teams have done so although 1 clean sheet in the last 5 doesn’t help the faith.  GW33 and DGW34 neutral if you hadn’t worked out.  The only Swansea option due to value.

Liverpool (H)
Aston Villa (A)
Hull (H)
Everton (H)
GW33 Leicester (A)
Newcastle (A)

Réveillere

If Van Aanholt was secure in his place then there would be no question he would be the Sunderland defensive pick.  However in absence of his gametime security it’s either the £4.5m FB or CB O’Shea as an alternative.  However the £4.6m GK Pantilimon is also great value at £4.6m.  He’s also the highest points per game GK of anyone with a current first team place.  A blank in GW33 but a potential DGW34

Aston Villa (H)
West Ham (A)
Newcastle (H)
Crystal Palace (H)
– Gameweek 33 –
Stoke (A)

Rojo

The Man Utd defence has been a little hit and miss to say the least but only Chelsea and Southampton have conceded less goals.  They also have good underlying defensive stats.  Finding a secure cheap player in the long term with the selection fiddling of LVG to help out at GW33 where they are neutral is the issue so Rojo gets the nod by default.  Like Kompany though are you going to make them 1 of your 2 likely premium defenders over Southampton and Chelsea?  De Gea for all his security and performances is an expensive option at £5.9m.  Tough fixtures too

Spurs (H)
Liverpool (A)
Aston Villa (H)
Man City (H)
Chelsea (A)
Everton (A)

A word about Schlupp.  The Leicester midfielder classified as a defender in FPL  has got 3 goals and an assist this season and has gained alot of attention with a definite DGW34 coming up and no blank GW33.  He also has good fixtures.  I did the maths on him, However with Leicester no clean sheets in the last 5, only 4 all season and a return per minute of 28.7 and at £4.5m it didn’t seem to stack up to me. However I thought I would mention him as he could be in alot of teams
