FANTASY PREMIER LEAGUE GW31 TRANSFER TIPS – THE BANDWAGONS AND SINKING SHIPS

Note this was written before the Stoke v Man City game but after the lineups were announced

THE BANDWAGONS

The bandwagons in this article are focused on the 5 top transfers in who have a fixture in GW31.  4 of the actual top 5 don’t have a fixture this week.  I’m struggling to think why that could be.  Even if I didn’t want to make a GW31 transfer I would roll it over rather than use it now with an international break after GW31.  It could be price considerations.  I’m finding it hard to believe people don’t even look to see what the next fixture is…. Anyway these bandwagons with a fixture in GW31 seems far more useful

So these are the 5 most transferred IN players that have a fixture so far in the gameweek.

Firmino

I personally think it would be wise to have 3 Liverpool players this week.  Firmino and Salah being 2 and then either Mane or a defender depending on whether you are a risk spreader or a “I like all my eggs in one basket” type of manager.  As you can imagine I’m in the former camp

£9.4m forward Firmino has 13 goals and 8 assists in 26 starts plus 3 as sub at points per 90 mins of 6.1 . The FPL bonus system suits him with 26 bonus points to date.  He’s been reasonably consistent with a goal or assist in 13 of those games which is an acceptable 50% of starts.  He has 7 double figure FPL hauls though which is excellent and often thanks to his ability to assist as well as score. His underlying stats don’t really match the returns (although he had a few exceptionally good games before Man Utd)  but he has shown an ability to overperform in the past.  However, the current level is well and truly over and above his past over performance which is the main watchout

Shaqiri

As I said above, this was written before the Monday night game v Man City.  £6.3m Mid Shaqiri  has had 26 starts plus 1 sub appearance for 7 goals and 6 assists at a points per 90 of 4.9. His consistency return rate is good returning a goal or assist in 12 games and the bonus system likes him with 16 to date.  He has been fairly streaky.  His  recent 3 consecutive goals followed 1 assist in 9 previous to that.  His underlying stats are also poor and he has over performed them through his goals from outside the box.  His history of over performance though isn’t as compelling as Firminos.  Tough fixtures after the blank week 31

Everton (H)
Arsenal (A)
Spurs (H)

Wilson

On the face of it Wilson’s stats look reasonably good for the price.  17 starts plus 3 sub appearances have resulted in 7 goals and 2 assists with a pretty good points per 90 stat.

However he’s only returned a goal or assist in 5 of those starts and he has blanked in the last 5.  Whats more his underlying stats in those 5 games have been nothing short of diabolical.  The sceptre of Jermaine Defoe now fit hangs over him and at some stage his starting place or at least minutes in games must be under threat.

 West Brom (H)
Watford (A)
Crystal Palace (H)

Mane

Has now returned a goal or assist in his last 3 matches and even got 2 bonus point on the back of his assist vs Man Utd.  That takes the total bonus haul to 8 as he snails his way to double figures.

That has been one of the big problems with him and one of the reasons why his  8 goals and 6 assists in 21 starts plus 1 sub appearance haven’t been at a higher rate than 6.1 points per 90.   What he does have is excellent underlying stats.  They have been particularly good recently apart from v Man Utd and Spurs

Watford (H)
Crystal Palace (A)
Everton (A)

Mounie

The Huddersfield striker has started the last 4 and played 90 minutes in each after being in and out of the side through injury and selection.  Those 4 games have seen 2 goals and 2 assists and apart from the Spurs game his underlying stats have been good.

Crystal Palace (H)
Newcastle (A)
Brighton (A)

The sinking ships

These are the 5 most transferred OUT players so far in the gameweek.

Kane

Injured his ankle in the win over Bournemouth.  The club have basically said they are waiting for the results of scans.  His 24 goals and 2 assists speak for themselves this season and they are backed up by his fantastic underlying stats.  No game in GW31 and whether you wait or sell may depend on the time frame and the difference between your sell and buy back price although that should fall somewhat.

I expect Son or Llorente to take his place.  Son moved to CF in the win v Bournemouth

J Ayew

Suspended after being sent off v Huddersfield and won’t be back until GW34 (FA Cup counts as 1 game).  Abraham was the sub for Ayew went sent off and I expect him to take his spot

Aguero

Not starting tonight v Stoke due to a training injury.  Here’s what he tweeted

During yesterday’s training I had a discomfort on my left knee. The club’s doctors told me I’ll be back with the team in approximately two weeks. Now it’s time for a full recovery!

With Jesus back I expect Aguero and Jesus to take the CF position as a job share although I imagine Jesus will play more of the PL games once the League is won and Aguero the UCL games due to Aguero’s form.  However Pep is never as predictable as you’d like him to be

Sterling

Started tonight v Stoke despite being not being in the last 2 squads.

Incredible season where he’s already done the double double with 15 goals and 10 assists in 21 starts plus 4 sub appearances.  His underlying stats have totally backed this up and only Salah has better.  Considering the number of games played I imagine he will be rested significantly once the league is won which could be by GW34.  That’s the negative

Lingard

It’s been some season for Lingard.  8 goals plus 4 assists in 15 starts plus 11 as sub on the back of really excellent underlying stats.

However the transfer of Sanchez plus an often used 4-3-3 formation have made Lingard expendable and he’s either been a sub or had his minute significantly curtailed on a number of occasions as him and Mata go to a job share at best.  What’s more it’s 1 goal in the last 6 starts and 2 sub appearances.  The underlying stats are also looking decidedly patchy.  It’s hard not to think that his time as a regular starter with decent minutes is at an end.
