Joseph Crilley is doing his excellent gameweek reviews including the gameweek underlying stats. Here’s a schedule of the fantasy premier league key underlying stats in cumulative summary form. We include shots in the box, Shots on target, key passes and many more mainly from the excellent site whoscored.com
fantasy premier league key underlying stats summary
Firstly there’s a load of graphics and stats coming up so if you just want the key points there’s a section at the end to jump to
Here we are going to show you the top players in terms of the key underlying stats. Underlying stats help you see what’s behind a players performance. At one extreme if a player has scored 5 goals and you see he’s only had 5 shots then it’s going to make you wonder if that’s sustainable. On the reverse side if a player is going through a barren spell but you see that he’s been regularly getting shots then that may convince you to hold him a little longer.
It’s obvioulsy not possible to give stats on every player so what I’ve done is pick the top players out of key stats. Then there’s a section on set pieces and 1 section especially for defenders. Those stats are all free public stats on whoscored.com. At the moment as we’re 2 games in the stats are all totals. Once we get further in it will be per 90 mins and subject to minimum minutes thresholds
Lastly I’m keeping tabs of the teams expected goals summary cumulatively. Thats for their defence and their attack. Those are all free publicly available on the twitter sites 11tgen11 and caley graphics.
Remember were only 2 games in and that should be taken into account with the data.
Shots in the box
So good news for Harry Kane owners. You can make a case that he’s been unlucky here. Only 3 mids. Surprisingly Richarlison, Ramsey and less surprisingly Mane. No Lacazette and no City player is the disappointment
Shots in the 6 yard box
Not sure what Yacob is doing there? Maybe he gets hit blocking off the GK at corners?
Shots on target
Mane, Alonso and Tadic are the non strikers here.
Key passes
Just for clarity this is how whoscored.com clarify a key pass:
The final pass leading to a shot at goal from a teammate
The main thing to come from this is the lack of Kevin De Bruyne. Now City’s stats are mitigated by having Kyle Walker sent off but still
Set Piece assist potential
Here we look at who’s making the most key passes from free kicks and corners
Firstly from free kicks
Pretty disappointing amounts.
Now from corners
Defender focus
Here we look at the attacking potential of defenders through shots in the box and key passes
Firstly shots in the box
Not sure why Calvert Lewin has popped up there?
Now key passes
Whoscored don’t align their player positions with the FPL sites so the Ox and Chris Brunt aren’t defenders
Expected goals (xG)
This stat looks at shots in a game and gives a % of the chance that it should be a goal based on historic data around that shot position. A shot from the half way line will have a very low expected goals amount. A shot from the 6 yard box will have a much higher % of being a goal.
A number of organisations have their own data so games are interpreted differently by different data providers. I’ve taken the data from the brilliant twitter site 11tegen11 and from Caley graphics if it isn’t available from 11tegen11. Both of these are publicly available information.
I’ve done it for defensive and attacking stats and ordered them by the best ranking
Defensive xG
Here’s the order from the first 2 games:
So the surprises are that Huddersfield and Watford are so high and Southampton and Liverpool so low.
Attacking xG
If you’re worried about youR Arsenal attacking players then this may help. Watford are the surprise. Spurs Chelsea and Everton are quite low.
So what to take away from all this
Remember this is only 2 games stats
Kane despite two blanks leads the shots in the box stats. He’s also hit the post twice
Lukaku’s great start is no fluke. He’s 2nd to Kane in the shots in the box stat
Lack of Man City and Arsenal players in the shot stats apart from Jesus in the shots in the 6 yard stat. However the sending off v Everton will distort stats
Mane looking the biggest midfield and Liverpool goal threat
Ramsey getting into the box and shooting at an excellent rate
Watford’s mid Richarlison the surprise name in the stats
Ozil, Silva D, Mkhitaryan lead the key pass stat. De Bruyne no where to be seen
Man Utd post great xG numbers attacking and defensively
