fantasy premier league midfielders GW3 – player rankings

First it’s important to remember that each player is ranked as a transfer target for this week. So while we generally look at fixtures form and underlying stats a player who’s away to Man City is going to be ranked lower than someone home to Huddersfield for example. If possible a transfer should have a good fixture first up.

Firstly there’s a table of stats. Then there’s a bit of brief commentary on each player.

This is the 2nd player rankings article.  I’ve also written a defenders and GKs player rankings article

Just a quick note before this that I haven’t included Sanchez at this stage due to uncertainty over minutes

STATS DEFINITIONS

Fixt Ease: The ease of the mentioned fixture range from an attacking perspective. See our GW3 fixture ease article

Mins per FPL pt: How long it took to earn an FPL point in 16/17. The lower the better

PPG: the points per match taken from the FPL site

Underlying stats: I’ve taken underlying shot and key pass stats from whoscored.com and tried to put them into a meaningful number. The higher the better.  You can see more in our underlying stats article

THE TABLE

I’ve ranked the players in the order that I see them. However there’s enough info for you to make an assessment.

Eriksen

Spurs have a great set of fixtures coming up starting with Burnley next.  Historically I’ve favoured Alli of the 2 Spurs midfielders but it’s hard to ignore Eriksen’s 19 FPL points so far from the 3 assists in 2 games.  He’s posted some impressive underlying stats to back this up and even his shooting stats look good. This is also with no assists resulting from his favourite target Harry Kane.  He also dominates set pieces.  My only negatives are that he often shoots from distance and he drops back to collect the ball too much.

Burnley (H)
Everton (A)
Swansea (H)
West Ham (A)
Huddersfield (A)
Bournemouth (H)

Alli

Just the 1 goal from Alli and some less than impressive underlying stats.  However this is an excellent finisher who plays virtually as a striker and will score goals with the great fixtures coming up

Burnley (H)
Everton (A)
Swansea (H)
West Ham (A)
Huddersfield (A)
Bournemouth (H)

Mkhitaryan

2 games 4 assists is a good start for the Man Utd AM.  His key pass stats have been excellent although he hasn’t been much of a shot threat.  You can see a more indepth analysis in our Pogba vs Mkhitaryan article.  He’s also featured in our bandwagons and sinking ships article where we look at the most transferred in and out players so far in the gameweek

Leicester (H)
Stoke (A)
Everton (H)
Southampton (A)
Crystal Palace (H)
Liverpool (A)

Mane

14 FPL points, 90 minutes in each game and a goal scored in both is a pretty good start for the Liverpool LAM.  Has also posted excellent shooting stats.  The next 2 fixtures are the negatives

Arsenal (H)
Man City (A)
Burnley (H)
Leicester (A)
Newcastle (A)
Man Utd (H)

Salah

Was off to a great start with a goal and an assist in his first game at Watford.  However that was followed by a benching presumably as rotation rather than performance related given his returns against Watford.  Has posted excellent underlying stats in both shots and key passes.  As I said for Mane the next 2 fixtures are the negatives.

Arsenal (H)
Man City (A)
Burnley (H)
Leicester (A)
Newcastle (A)
Man Utd (H)

Pogba

The box to box midfielder has been fantastic in breaking up play and starting counters high up the pitch or positioning himself to be part of counters instigated by others.  2 goals and 2 assists is some start to the season but again it has to be looked at in the context of the opposition.  As I said for Mkhitaryan see our Pogba vs Mkhitaryan article

Leicester (H)
Stoke (A)
Everton (H)
Southampton (A)
Crystal Palace (H)
Liverpool (A)

David Silva

In Pep’s 3-2-2-2 formation David Silva and De Bruyne play in the 2 behind the pair of strikers.  De Bruyne has little positional advantage over Silva but is £2m more expensive.  At a push you would say he has better set piece representation but it’s hardly enough to justify the price difference.  Silva has posed little shot threat but has produced far more key passes than De Bruyne.  All this was distorted by the Walker sending off against Everton but the pattern was pretty clear in the first half

Bournemouth (A)
Liverpool (H)
Watford (A)
Crystal Palace (H)
Chelsea (A)
Stoke (H)

Richarlison

A goal and assist leading to 15 FPL points is not bad for a 20 year old’s first 120 minutes in the premier league.  He’s posted some pretty stellar underlying stats for those returns too so it’s no fluke.  However he is new to the league and young so it’s very early to judge is the cautionary tale.  Also after Brighton the fixtures could be better

Brighton (H)
Southampton (A)
Man City (H)
Swansea (A)
West Brom (A)
Arsenal (H)

Antonio

Gained an assist through a very typical header on the edge of the 6 yard box which rebounded to goal poacher Chicharito.  Posted some good underlying stats in that first 67 minutes of the season and looked fantastic in getting into the penalty area at the right time.  A real goalscoring midfielder with excellent fixtures coming up.  Coming back from injury so whether he will get 90 minutes is the question

Newcastle (A)
Huddersfield (H)
West Brom (A)
Spurs (H)
Swansea (H)
Burnley (A)

Tadic

Scored with a penalty against West Ham even if it wasn’t the most convincing one ever seen.  Thats a bonus and although Redmond has posted better underlying stats I’m set with Tadic as having some SET piece potential as well as being more centrally involved.  Good fixtures

Huddersfield (A)
Watford (H)
Crystal Palace (A)
Man Utd (H)
Stoke (A)
Newcastle (H)
