Fantasy premier league new player profile – Swanseas Jose Alberto Canas

New player profiles

Jose Alberto Canas is 5 foot 10 inch 26 year old Spanish midfelder who has transferred from Real Betis to Swansea City on a free transfer

Background

Jose Alberto Canas has spent the last 2 seasons at Primera Liga side Real Betis as a defensive midfielder.  The previous  season was spent in the Real Betis B team in the Segunda Division after debuting in the season before in the Primera Liga again for Real Betis

He is a deep lying play maker known for his passing and interceptions rather than a tackling specialist.  Unfortunately shooting goals assists and creating chances arent really part of his repitoire.

Heres what he had to say when transferring

“The Premier League is the place where everyone wants to be now, and Swansea City is very attractive in the league due to the way they play, the manager they have and the friendly club that it is. I could not let this opportunity go to be honest.

“The manager was a quite important point. I had several options abroad and the fact that the manager knows you obviously helps when making the decision. His style of play is quite attractive and I do not think I will have any difficulties to fit in quickly.

“We had some options but Swansea was on top of them from the beginning – they showed strong interest and that was important to me.”

He has a high pass per game average although probably not enough to warrant Sky Sports bonus selection but he also has the ability to play the long pass as well as the short stuff associated with Swansea City.  This may give additional chances for Michu’s aerial threat.  He’s not really a shooter or an assister given his deep lying position.

Fantasy premier league perspective

1 assist and no goals from 66 games says it all. Central defensive midfield isnt a position that is a winner for fantasy premier league apart from the Sky format and his passing stats fall a little short of the Sky bonus number.

Debates about whether he Britton or Ki will start are a bit irrelevant really.  I guess its possible that if he’s cheap enough he could be a benchwarming minimum cost substitute but Laudrup rotated his defensive midfielders and being new to the league he desnt offer this certainty.  Additionally the lack of returns make me think there are bound to be better options for this role.   At this stage there’s no way Jose Alberto Canas should be in anyones opening day fantasy premier league team
