fantasy premier league news of the day – 2 October 2012

News

Here’s the fantasy premier league news of the day including Wiltshire, Bent, Cole, Gomez and Wisdom.

Jack Wiltshire

Wiltshire played his first competitive game in 14 months for Arsenal after his long lay off with an ankle problem.  He played 63 minutes before being subbed.  The earliest he is expected back will be October 20th .  A similar return to Diaby.  It will be interesting see where he fits in.  I expect him to be one of the 2 screening midfielders although Diaby if fit and Arteta will be hard to displace .

Darren Bent

More disquiet with Darren Bent and Paul Lambert.  As I said, he’s not one to be slighted quietly.  Here’s some quotes from the Daily Mail and he wasn’t mincing his words

‘I felt a bit disappointed I didn’t start the game,’ he said. ‘It’s been a crappy couple of weeks for me.

‘I found out I wasn’t captain before the Swansea game and I found out before the West Brom game I wasn’t playing.

‘It’s frustrating and disappointing, especially after my confidence was coming back after a goal against Southampton.

‘I’ve not spoken to the manager. He’s said nothing to me. Nothing. We’ll probably speak this week.’

It should be interesting to see how this affects his form motivation and selection.  What’s clear though is no one is safe under Paul Lambert

Joe Cole

Joe Cole could feature in Thursdays Europa league match against Udinese after being out for 6 weeks with a hamstring injury according to a story in the Mail.  He played 59 minutes in a reserve match and scored the opening goal

Rodgers has done a bit of chopping and changing with his squad recently but it will take some supplanting to get rid of those who featured so prominently in the win against Norwich.  Its probably Sterling who’s the most vulnerable on the left of the front midfield 3 as Cole doesn’t have the mobility or tackling to screen.  Sterling is in such great form though I cant see him losing his place at the moment.

James Mcfadden

Former  Everton left sided midfielder James McFadden is set to move to Sunderland as a free agent after impressing in trials.

Here’s what O’Neill  said  ‘We’ll see how it goes but he has done well and we’ll talk.’  Hard to see him displacing Johnson or McLean and there’s still cover for the flanks with Laarson going back to the right so no need to hover over the transfer button just yet

Jordi Gomez

The 751 people who sold him needn’t have bothered as his red card has been rescinded.  He has been a player on the fringe of my thinking since he has been selected as  his shooting stats are pretty good and he’s reasonably priced at £5.3m.

Szczesny

Fantasy premier league owners of Mannone should get until game week 8 or 9 until Szczesny is back.

Wisdom

Cheapie RB Andre Wisdom at £4.5m could really be a bargain as Liverpools fixtures improve starting with goal shy Stoke.  With long ball hoofer and aimless crosser Enrique injured and far more suited to the previous regime and Kelly out for the season those willing to take a gamble could have a huge bargain on their hands.  The Liverpool defence has good underlying stats and I expect the clean sheets to start coming.  I think if Rodgers was going to play Carragher or Coates at RB he would have done so at the weekend.  Heres what he had to say about the 19 year old on the Liverpool website.

“When I came in, Andre Wisdom had been playing a lot at centre-half but he has the physical and technical capacity to play full-back,” said the boss.

“The modern day full-back has a lot of the ball and he has got to have strength, pace and power. Andre has that.”

 Enrique

Reported on the Sky sports site Enrique talked about the pain he’s been going through with his knee  but hopes to be back soon although no target date given.  Here’s what he said

I don’t know quite what the problem is but I have been playing with a lot of pain,” he told Liverpools official website.

“I had an injection in my knee so hopefully that will settle it down and allow me to find my form again because it is difficult playing with pain.

“It is something behind my knee and I have had to be very careful with it. I’ve been trying to play with it but it is not 100 per cent.

“I felt it in training before the opening day of the season at West Brom and since then it has been very bad. Hopefully the injection will sort it out.

“Obviously with a new manager at the club you want to be at your best, but I want to play to help us climb up the table. I want to get back as soon as possible.”

He’s not exactly a favourite of the new manager but getting value out of Wisdom at RB will probably require his injury to continue otherwise Rodgers may go for his experience at LB and Johnson moving back to RB.
