Joselu, real name José Luis Sanmartín Mato, is a 25 year old 1.91m (6 foot 3 inches) Spanish centre forward who has been signed from Hannover 96 to Stoke City for £5.9m. We look at his stats and prospects in FPL this season
Fantasy premier league pre-season – New player profile – Stoke forward Joselu
Here’s his stats:
Joselu | ||||
Season | Team | Games | goals/assts | Mins per Goal/Asst |
2014/15 | Hannover | 30 | 8/4 | 206 mins |
2013/14 | Frankfurt | 24 | 9/2 | 151 mins |
2012/13 | Hoffenheim | 25 | 5/2 | 228 mins |

UCL | N/A | |||
Europa | All | 7 | 1/1 | 146 mins |
Spain | U21 | 4 | 1 goal |
Here’s some comparable player stats to give some context with his 2 fellow strikers as a comparison to start with:
Comparable players 14/15
Player | matches | goals/assts | Mins per G/A
Diouf (STK) | 34 | 12/3 | 162 mins
Crouch (STK) | 38 | 8/2 | 169 mins
Cisse (NU) | 22 | 11/1 | 97 mins
Austin (QPR) | 35 | 18/7 | 123 mins
Ings (BUR) | 35 | 11/4 | 202 mins
Ulloa (LEI) | 37 | 11/4 | 160 mins
Pretty ordinary stats apart from his 13/14 season with Frankfurt. His stats don’t compare that well to his competing Stoke centre forwards of Diouf and Crouch. Neither do they particularly compare that well to the cheap strikers of last season in FPL.
His Prospects
Joselu is a strong target man with pace who knows Bojan from Spain youth team days. However, gametime wise there appears to be a decent amount of risk about whether he will start in GW1 as he competes against fellow target men Diouf and Crouch. However, Crouch has had an operation on his groin and must be doubtful for GW1. Diouf though at 6 foot 1 inches still fits into the target man mode and had a great finish to the season and poses the main threat to Joselu starting in GW1.
Given his stats it’s questionable whether his stats can give him acceptable returns compared with other options that may arise at a similar price as a forward in FPL.
Here’s Stokes opening schedule:
Liverpool (H)
Tottenham (A)
Norwich (A)
WBA (H)
Arsenal (A)
Leicester (H)
The fixtures are pretty mixed and I’ve rated them 15th for the first 6 and 9th in the first 3. Therefore no real incentive to take the gametime risk.
Pre-season should help in ascertaining whether Joselu will lead the line in GW1 in preference to Diouf. Here’s their pre-season schedule:
Barclays Asia Trophy
15 July v Everton (Singapore National Stadium) 11am
18 July v Arsenal or Singapore XI (Singapore National Stadium) Kick-off TBC
22 July v Wrexham (Racecourse Ground) 7pm
25 July v Brentford (Griffin Park) 1.30pm
Colonia Cup
1 August v Cologne (RheinEnergieStadium) Kick-off TBC
2 August v Porto TBC (RheinEnergieStadium) Kick-off TBC
UPDATED 11/7: Joselu is classified as a forward in FPL and priced at £6.0m
Summary
- Pretty ordinary stats apart from 13/14 season
- Serious gametime risk for GW1 with Diouf competition who finished the season strongly
- Mixed fixtures to start
