fantasy premier league pre-season – Saturday 9 August games

Aston Villa 0 Parma 0

Villa: Guzan, Hutton, (Lowton, 82) Baker, (Vlaar,46) Senderos, (Okore, 64) Stevens, (Bennett, 74) Westwood, (Herd, 82) Delph, (Gardner, 82) Richardson, (Grealish, 64) N’Zogbia, (Bacuna, 74) Agbonlahor, (El Ahmadi, 82) Weimann. (Bent, 64) Subs: Given, Clark,

Lambert has never been the most predictable of managers but the pre-season has left me with little prospect of naming his lineup at the moment.  The good thing is that not that many FPL managers will be that bothered.  A clean sheet should always be a highlight for Villa but this wasn’t much of a game by all accounts.  Bent missed a couple of chances at the death, Richardson played in an advanced role behind the striker, NZogbia and Westwood sharing direct free kicks and Vlaar getting 45 minutes were the highlights.

Form players in preseason: Bent and NZogbia
Potential value players: Richardson as a mid at £5.0m if he can stake a place.
Potential GW1 lineup:  Will depend on formation which could still be any of 3.  Guzan – 2/3 of Baker/Clark/Herd/Senderos/Vlaar,  Hutton, Cissokho – Westwood, Delph, ElAhmadi/NZogbia,Richardson – 2/3 of Weiman, Agbonlahor, Bent

Burnley 3 Verona 1

Burnley: Heaton, Trippier, Duff, Shackell, Mee, Taylor (Kightly 77), Marney, Jones, Arfield (Wallace 69), Ings, Jutkiewicz (Sordell 63).
Subs: Gilks, Long, Anderson, Lafferty, O’Neill, Reid, Barnes.

Goals:  Taylor, Jutkiwecz, Wallace

At least Dyche is playing ball with his team for us FPL managers.  Apart from a couple of debating points this looks like a first choice team.  Vokes is the only significant injury and long term.  Only Taylor or Kightly look like a lineup debating point.  Jutkiwecz was the star again and scored again.  Looking a good option for 3-5-2

form players in pre-season: Jutkiewicz
Value players: Duff as a defender at £4.0m. Jones as £4.5m FPL midfield benchwarmers. Jutkiewicz as £5.0m 3-5-2 striker.
Potential GW1 lineup: Heaton – Trippier, Mee, Duff, Shackell – Kightly/Taylor, Arfield, Jones, Marney if fit – Ings if fit, Jutkiewicz

Augsburg 0 Palace 0

Crystal Palace: Speroni (Hennessey 46), Ward, Dann (McCarthy 82), Hangeland, Jerome Williams, Puncheon (Gayle 65), Jedinak, Ledley, Bolasie (Bannan 65), Chamakh (Guedioura 72), Campbell (Murray 65).
Unused subs: Mariappa.

A game that Palace had their chances but didn’t convert.  The LB position continues to frustrate as not on FPL Jerome Williams gets the nod which makes the Mariappa situation untenable at the moment.  The best thing that could happen is Pulis signs his former player in Marc Wilson from Stoke at £4.5m.  Delaney had a knock so didn’t start.  The midfield looks fairly setlled but upfront is still an area of uncertainty

Form players in pre-season: Murray

Value players:  All fairly valued.

Potential GW1 lineup:  Speroni – Ward, 2 of Dann, Hangeland and Delaney, Jerome Williams – Jedinak, Ledley, Bolasie, Puncheon – 2 of Murray Chamkh Campbell

SC Paderborn 3 Everton 1

EVERTON: Howard, Baines, Alcaraz, Jagielka (Captain), Hibbert, Besic, Barry, Pienaar (Naismith, 59) McGeady (Hope, 87), Barkley (Osman, 45), Long (McCarthy, 79).

Subs not used: Robles, Distin, Stones, Garbutt, McAleny, Duffy.

Bookings: Besic

Goals: Long (13)

Everton have Coleman injured with no return date and Lukaku and Mirallas still World Cup unfit.  Evertons results in preseason have been abysmal and again only Besic showed any form although 19 yo Chris Long scored and looked lively.

Form players in preseason: Naismith, Besic
Potential value players:  Hibbert at £4.5m could be a cheap RB if Coleman still isn’t fit for GW1 Although only to the injury is healed
Potential GW1 lineup: Howard – Hibbert, Baines, Stones/Distin, Jagielka – Barry, McCarthy – Pienaar, Barkley,  Osman – Lukaku

QPR 0 PAOK 1

QPR: Green, Simpson (Phillips 68), Caulker, Ferdinand (Hill 57), Dunne (Onuoha 57), Wright-Phillips, Barton, Faurlin (Henry 68), Mutch, Hoilett (Zamora 57), Austin.
Still no Remy although amazingly Rednapps making positive noises about him starting.  Mutch made his debut and played in the CAM role which questions Hoilett’s position.  Harry continues with 3 at the back with SWP doing an Ashley Young as the LWB.  No great form to speak of although it was a promising start for Jordan Mutch.

Form players in preseason: Austin, Hoilett.  £5.5m Mutch made a promising start.
Value players: Hoilett at £5.0m
Potential GW1 lineup: Green – Caulker, Ferdinand,  Dunne/Onuoha – Barton, Henry/Faurlin, Simpson, SWP –  Remy/Zamaora Austin

Southampton 0 Bayer Leverkusen 1

Southampton team: Artur Boruc, Nathaniel Clyne, José Fonte (c), Maya Yoshida, Ryan Bertrand, Victor Wanyama (Emmanuel Mayuka 76), Steven Davis (Jack Cork 76), James Ward-Prowse (Saphir Taïder 61), Dušan Tadić, Lloyd Isgrove (Gastón Ramírez 61), Graziano Pellè. Unused substitutes: Kelvin Davis (GK), Jos Hooiveld, Harrison Reed, Matt Targett, Jack Stephens, Sam McQueen.

Nothing really of note here form wise except Ramirez looking lively when he came on and a good debut from CDM Taider.

Form players in preseason:  Pelle

Value players: £4.5m Yoshida looks like he will be Fontes partner and is value at £4.5m.  Davis at £4.5m with a share of set pieces is good value.

Potential GW1 lineup:   Boruc/Foster – Clyne, Bertrand, Yoshida, Fonte – Tadic, Ramirez, Davis, JWP, Wanyama – Pelle

Freiburg 1 Stoke 1

STOKE CITY: Begovic; Bardsley (Cameron 77), Shawcross, Wilson (Huth 73), Muniesa (Pieters 73); Whelan, Nzonzi (Sidwell 61); Bojan (Arnautovic 65), Ireland (Adam 61), Odemwingie (Walters 65); Diouf (Crouch 77). Subs: Sorensen, Teixeira.
With no real injuries to worry about the lineup was the main interest in a game that Diouf and Bardsley were probably the most impressive performers.  A few surprises in the lineup which you would think would be close to GW1.   Muniesa in for Pieters and Odemwingie in for Arnautovic puts some doubt on those 2.  Even Wilson in for Huth creates some doubt.

Form player in preseason: Bojan
Value players: Bojan at £5.5m although unfortunately a forward. Ireland at £5.0m if he can play centrally in the attacking 3 of 4-2-3-1 which is looking more likely after starting again today
Potential GW1 lineup: Begovic – Bardsley, Pieters/Muniesa, Huth/Wilson, Shawcross – NZonzi, Whelan – Arnautovic/Odemwingie, Bojan, Ireland – Diouf

WBA 1 Porto 3

WBA (4-2-3-1): Foster; Wisdom, Dawson, Olsson, Pocognoli (Yacob 85); Baird, Mulumbu (Anichebe 61); Dorrans, Gardner, Brunt, (Sessegnon 61); Berahino. Subs not used: Myhill, O’Neil, Garmston, Roofe, A Nabi.

Goal:  Olsson

A game that WBA were completely outclassed in.  Lescott, Morrison and McAuley were injured with none of them likely to make the GW1 lineup.

form players in preseason: Anichebe
value players:  £4.0m Wisdom should start at RB but probably only short term though. Baird holding his place at £4.0m and playing as a CDM looks good value although he will compete with Yacob.  Dorrans at £5.0m looks reasonable value.
potential GW1 lineup: Foster – Wisdom, Olsson, Dawson, Pocognoli – Mulumbu, Baird/Yacob – Dorrans/Berahino, Brunt, Sessegnon – Anichebe

West Ham 3 Sampdoria 1

West Ham: Adrian, Tomkins, Reid, Collins (Burke 75), Cresswell (Potts 35); Kouyate (Diame, 56), Noble (Poyet 83), Nolan, Downing; Cole (Lee 75), Zarate (Vaz Te 45).

Subs Not Used: Jaaskelainen, Cullen.

Goals:  Noble, Burke

With injuries to both RBs Demel and Jenkinson, both with no return dates, Big Sam confused the CB situation even further by playing all 3.  So we are no clearer if £4.5m Collins will start GW1.  However given West Hams defensive record in pre-season then it’s no loss at the moment.  No real form in this game to mention even with the good score line.  Creswell was injured during the game.

form players in preseason:  No one has stood out

value players:  £4.5m Collins if he can make the lineup but thats still a big doubt.

Potential GW1 lineup:  Adrian – ????, Reid, Collins/Tomkins, O’Brien- Noble, Nolan, Kouyate – Downing, Cole, Zarate

Sunderland 2 Udinese 0

Sunderland: Pantilimon (Mannone, 46), van Aanholt (T Robson, 39), Brown, O’Shea, Vergini (Roberge, 61), Cattermole (Bridcutt, 85), Gomez (N’Diaye, 71), Rodwell (Agnew, 46), Wickham (Altidore, 61), Mavrias (Watmore, 75), Fletcher (Graham, 71).

Goals:  Vergini, Wickham pen

Giaccherini is injured with no return date.  RB Billy Jones is also injured but expected back for GW1.  Getting back into the side won’t be easy after Vergini (not on FPL) scored and won the pen from RB.   No closer on the GK front with both getting 45 minutes.

Form players in preseason: Fletcher now Vergini
Value players:Forward Fletcher has 3-5-2 potential at £5.5m.
Potential GW1 lineup: Mannone/Pantilimon – Jones/Vergini, O’Shea, Brown, Van Aanholt – Bridcutt/Cattermole – Gomez, Johnson, Rodwell, Wickham – Fletcher

Swansea 0 Villareal 3

SWANSEA: Lukasz Fabianski, Angel Rangel, Kyle Bartley (Jordi Amat, 60), Ashley Williams (capt), Neil Taylor, Ki Sung-Yueng, Jonjo Shelvey, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Jefferson Montero, Bafetimbi Gomis, Wilfried Bony (Alex Bray, 83).
SUBS NOT USED: Gerhard Tremmel, Jazz Richards, Dwight Tiendalli, Stephen Kingsley, Josh Sheehan, Adam King.

Not really much positive to take from this apart from a lively performance from Jefferson Montero.  Siggy was fielded on the right by all accounts as Gomis and Bony were paired together.  Injuries to Emnes and Britton both with no return dates.

Form players in preseason:  Siggy

Value players:  LB Neil Taylor at £4.0m

Potential GW1 lineup:  Fabianski – Rangel, Amat, Williams, Taylor – Ki, Shelvy, Siggy, Montero – Gomis, Bony or if Lone striker Bony – add in another midfielder of probably Hernandez

Leicester 1 Werder Bremen 0

CITY: Schmeichel, De Laet, Konchesky, Drinkwater (James 46), Morgan (c) (Wasilewski 46), Hammond (Ulloa 46), King, Albrighton (Schlupp 40), Moore, Mahrez (Taylor-Fletcher 68), Nugent (Wood 68

Goal:  Morgan

Another goal from £4.5m CB Morgan although Leicesters difficult start make it hard to chose a defender.     Upson and Albrighton are now injured with no return date making it difficult to own the  £4.0m defender and the £4.5m mid.  Former Brighton striker Ulloa  was probably the star man.

form players in preseason: Nugent, Morgan, Ulloa, Albrighton

Value players: £4.0m CB Moore, Hammond £4.5m benchwarmer, Nugent £5.5m in a 3-5-2

Potential GW1 lineup:  Schmeichel – De Laet, Konchesky, Morgan, Moore – Hammond, King, Mahrez, Taylor Fletcher – Ulloa, Nugent

Spurs 2 Schalke 1

Spurs: Lloris, Naughton, Kaboul (Fryers 79), Dier, Rose (Davies 46), Holtby (Ceballos 84), Bentaleb (Carroll 74), Lennon (Townsend 46), Eriksen (Sandro 67), Lamela (Kane 46), Adebayor (Soldado 46). Substitutes (not used): Friedel, Veljkovic, Fredericks.

Goals:  Soldado, Adebayor

Spurs have Dawson, Chiriches, Walker and Dembele all on the no return date injury list making a lineup difficult to predict.  Vertobghen is still being rested and in Poccetinhos  policy of high pressing game if you’re not fit you don’t play he seems set for the bench or stands for GW1.  The result was impressive as Schalke bought a strong team.  Just to make matters interesting young CB Eric Dier had an outstanding game making it possible that he and Kaboul could start.  The LB Ben Davies/ Rose scenario was thrown into confusion with Rose starting.  Townsend also had an excellent game causing confusion for Schalke and those rare people thinking of Lennon.

The battle for the CAM seems to be won by Lamela with Eriksen out on the right.  You’ve got a central position vs set pieces for the same £8.0m price.

form players in preseason: Lamela

value players:  short term value in RB Naughton at £4,5m.

Potential GW1 lineup:  Lloris – Naughton, Rose/Davies, Kaboul, Dier – Holtby Bentaleb – Eriksen, Lamela, Townsend/Lennon – Adebayor
