Fantasy Premier League, Player Rankings

FANTASY PREMIER LEAGUE PREMIUM MIDFIELDER PLAYER RANKINGS GW10 – MIDFIELDERS £7.5M PLUS

First it’s important to remember that each player is ranked as a transfer target for this week. So while we generally look at fixtures form and underlying stats a player who’s away to Man City is going to be ranked lower than someone home to Huddersfield for example. If possible a transfer should have a good fixture first up.

Firstly there’s a table of stats. Then there’s a bit of brief commentary on each player and their next 6 fixtures.

This is the 2nd player rankings article. I’ve also written a defenders and GKs player rankings article

STATS DEFINITIONS

Fixt Ease: The ease of the mentioned fixture range from an attacking perspective. See our GW10 fixture ease article

Mins per FPL Pt. The amount of minutes a player takes to earn an FPL point. The shorter and obviously lower the number is the better

ATGS – the bookies anytime goalscoring odds for GW10. I’ve used William Hill

xG and xA per 90 – the expected goals and assists per 90 minutes played from the better than excellent site understat.com. See our underlying stats summary for expected goal information on teams and players. See also Joseph Crilleys GW9 review with underlying stats part 1 and part 2

The schedule

First a word on Man City

Gametime is obviously a crucial part of assessing a players ranking.  However the last 2 fixtures have shown that it is impossible to use rational analysis to assess what Pep is doing.  So I’m ranking Man City players purely on stats.  I’ll give information in the narrative on factors that you would think will affect gametime but ultimately it’s a decision you as an FPL manager will need to make an assessment on.  I know that’s ideal but no one can predict Pep.

Sane

4 consecutive starts in the PL.  3 of 90 minutes and 2 goals and 2 assists in the last 2 performances.  Absolutely incredible returns per minute and arguable the best underlying stats of any midfielder.  If only we could be sure of gametime.  Having being rested in the midweek EFL cup game you’d think he would be guaranteed a start in GW10. If only it were that simple.

West Brom (A)
Arsenal (H)
Leicester (A)
Huddersfield (A)
Southampton (H)
West Ham (H)

Salah

Scored in the loss to Spurs at the weekend and one of the few Liverpool players to come out of the game with any credit.  5 goals and 2 assists in his 8 starts and he’s scored or assisted in 5 of those 8 games.  His underlying stats are very good and he’s met expectations of goal threat in 6 of those 8 games.  However the only similar test to the weekend was home to Burnley where he was disappointing underlying stats wise although he did score.

 Huddersfield (H)
West Ham (A)
Southampton (H)
Chelsea (H)
Stoke (A)
Brighton (A)

Sterling

Played the whole 120 minutes midweek so you would think he would have to be a starting risk for GW10.

Didn’t play in GW9 but has been in fantastic form. 6 goals and 2 assists in 5 starts and 2 sub appearances is exceptional stuff.  Although his underlying stats are exceptional it has been a bit of feast or famine type stats with 2 of those 5 starts being less of a goal threat than you’d want.  The underlying stats are also off the charts compared to his previous seasons although that’s the case with alot of the City players.

West Brom (A)
Arsenal (H)
Leicester (A)
Huddersfield (A)
Southampton (H)
West Ham (H)

Sanchez

A goal and an assist in the Gueye sending off assisted win over Everton plus a fixture at home to Swansea next has put him in the FPL spotlight.  There’s nothing wrong with his 1 goal and 3 assists in his 3 starts and 2 short sub appearances this season.  His underlying stats are excellent and the goal threat stats sustainable on previous years.  I don’t really need to tell you how good Sanchez is and it’s comforting to know that despite what appears to be dissatisfaction with his team mates and the club he is showing Sanchez like stats.  It’s just the price and the fixtures after this excellent game next

Swansea (H)
Man City (A)
Spurs (H)
Burnley (A)
Huddersfield (H)
Man Utd (H)

Coutinho

UPDATE:  There are stories that Coutinho is injured and out for GW10.  I’ll update on twitter

His return per minute stats look very good although they do mask the fact that he’s blanked in 3 of his 5 starts to date.  He’s also in a group of 2 with Eriksen where his underlying stats just don’t cut it.  What’s more they’re well below previous seasons.  Even worse he’s yet to post underlying stats to match his average last season and the last 2 games have been woeful.  However Eriksen at least is guaranteed an advanced position whereas Coutinho has played deeper and seems to drift back even when he’s supposed to be in the front 3.

However you don’t have Barca wanting to pay £100m for you if you’re a bad player and with set pieces we know he can be an assist and be a goal threat.  To transfer him in you have to believe in his quality and the fixtures and ignore the underlying stats story.

 Huddersfield (H)
West Ham (A)
Southampton (H)
Chelsea (H)
Stoke (A)
Brighton (A)

Silva

If Pep didn’t realise the importance of Silva to his team before the Wolves EFL cup match then I’m sure he did after the match.  While Silva was watching the game at home on TV with a takeaway his team mates toiled away unable to break down City in 120 minutes.  In the final 3rd Silva is irreplaceable and while you may not get the goal threat of Sane or Sterling it’s hard to see that even Pep can gamble on not playing Silva.  Despite the lack of goal threat compared to Sane and Sterling his returns are good for the price

West Brom (A)
Arsenal (H)
Leicester (A)
Huddersfield (A)
Southampton (H)
West Ham (H)

De Bruyne

While the pundits have raved about De Bruyne while he assists the assister in FPL terms we have a player who’s output is similar to Silva’s but De Bruyne is £1.4m more expensive.   Still he seems to be fairly secure gametime wise and does provide good returns even for the price

West Brom (A)
Arsenal (H)
Leicester (A)
Huddersfield (A)
Southampton (H)
West Ham (H)

Hazard

The good fixtures of Palace and Watford have passed Hazard by with only an assist to show in the 2 games.  That has been his solitary return in 3 starts and 3 sub appearances and given his appalling underlying stats to date he’s been lucky to have got that.   However we know his quality and to say that there is alot of headroom in his current underlying stats is a bit of an understatement.  It’s just you don’t want the words potential and headroom mentioned when you’re paying £10.6m

Bournemouth (A)
Man Utd (H)
West Brom (A)
Liverpool (A)
Swansea (H)
Newcastle (H)

Ozil

What was more significant in the 5-2 win over Everton?  The fact that it was the first time Sanchez, Ozil and Lacazette started together for Arsenal or the Everton sending off and general defensive incompetence.  Well Swansea provides an interesting test of that next.  Despite the goal and assist being his first returns in 5 starts and 1 sub appearance the Arsenal RCAM has been producing underlying stats at a very high level and can consider himself very unlucky to have only produced the 1 assist.  In fact he’s creating chances at a similar level to when he got 19 assists in a season a couple of years back.  Sanchez and Lacazette both playing will surely help that conversion rate although I think someone like Giroud is a more natural target for his game

Swansea (H)
Man City (A)
Spurs (H)
Burnley (A)
Huddersfield (H)
Man Utd (H)

Eriksen

I said alot of negative things about Eriksen last week but really I was only stating facts.  3 goals and 3 assists in 9 starts is nothing to be sniffed at as well as set piece responsibility and Harry Kane as a target for the chances you create.  However the fact is that he’s only produced his xA90 and xG90 average of last season twice in the 9 games so far and his xA90 is the same as Tom Carrolls and not far off a third of Ozils.

 Man Utd (A)
Crystal Palace (H)
Arsenal (A)
West Brom (H)
Leicester (A)
Watford (A)
