Fantasy Premier League

Here’s our fantasy premier league promoted teams focus for Huddersfield Town.  It seemed a good time with all the recent transfer activity to look at them in detail.  We look at how they could line up on current information.  There’s also a load of player stats to help you choose the best option for your FPL team

A team overview

Huddersfield came up through the play off system last season after finishing 5th in the regular season winning on penalties against Reading.  Of the 3 promoted teams in Newcastle , Brighton and Huddersfield they scored nearly 30 goals less than Newcastle and conceded 18 more than Brighton and Newcastle.  They also scored less goals than the previously relegated Middlesborough and Hull who came up in 16/17.  They conceded well over 20 goals more than both those teams

The bookies have them £1.57 to be relegated with Brighton next at £2.20.

So not a great start.  However a closer look against the 3 promoted sides this season doesn’t see them particularly off the pace in terms of the underlying stats of possession, shots and tackles.

Summer transfers

However Huddersfield have been very busy in the transfer market bring in in 7 players although 2 in Mooy and Palmer were at the club last season through loans.  Here’s the transfers in from the premierleague website.

Laurent Depoitre Fwd (FC Porto) Undisclosed
Aaron Mooy CM (Man City) £8m
Jonas Lossl GK  (Mainz) Loan
Tom Ince RW (Derby County) Undisclosed
Kasey Palmer CAM (Chelsea) Loan
Danny Williams (Reading) Free
Steve Mounie (Montpellier) Undisclosed

Izzy Brown the Chelsea loanee CAM from last season is still in the melting pot although the story is he won’t be loaned.

These acquisitions have improved the depth and quality of the squad.

Playing style

In terms of playing style the manager Wagner is a friend of Jurgen Klopp so it’s no surprise that he favours a high pressing style of play.  His default formation last season was also 4-2-3-1.  Huddersfield made more tackles last season than both Brighton and Huddersfield.

They certainly like to foul so expect a decent number of yellow cards.

Potential lineup

Here’s how I think they would lineup on current playing staff and assuming that Izzy Brown returns.  Remember there’s a long way to go before the start of the season though.  Pre-season will tell us alot.

The main doubt is probably Williams vs Hogg but that’s of little consequence with them being defensive midfielders.  The GK situation is not completely straightforward but that should become clearer in pre-season

Both Ince and Kachunga are right sided players but given the relationship with Smith that Kachunga has you would think he will stay.  If Brown doesn’t return I’m not sure how much belief there is in Palmer from the manager.  Ince could move centrally.  Mounie seems certain to lead the line.  Wells and Depoitre just don’t compare quality wise to Mounie.  Defence seems fairly settled baring any signings.

Fixtures

Here are their first 6 fixtures from the premier league website:

Crystal Palace v Huddersfield

Huddersfield v Newcastle

Huddersfield v Southampton

West Ham v Huddersfield

Huddersfield v Leicester

Burnley v Huddersfield

I’ve rated them 7th best attacking fixtures for the first 3 games, 5th for the first 6 and 13th for the first 10.  You can see more in my recent GW1 fixture ease article

Player stats

Here’s a table I’ve put together of player stats.  I’ve just concentrated on the players in the lineup above but ignored the GK and the 1 CDM position.  The underlying stats are from whoscored.com.  I’ve not tried to guess prices but will update the table when the FPL site is up.

It seems last season Mooy and Lowe shared set pieces and penalties

The GK Lossl played 27 games for Mainz last season and has 1 cap for Denmark.  No indication that Danny Ward of Liverpool who was at Huddersfield on loan last season will be back.

Forward Mounie has pretty good stats and should be fairly cheap.  New strikers to the league in the lower placed clubs though are fraught with risk.  However the fixtures are good so if you’re going to roll the dice this would be the time.

In the midfield Ince stands out like a sore thumb not only in actual stats but underlying ones as well.

Defence is probably a choice between the attacking potential of Smith and the value hopefully of Schindler. Schindler was clearly the top rated whoscored Huddersfield player so defensively that can give a rough proxy for the best bonus potential. Whether you want to pay an attacking premium for Smith who could very easily struggle for clean sheets is questionable.  How that attacking ability will also translate to the premier league is also questionable.   Clean sheet prospects don’t look good at all and whether there will be defensive reinforcements remains to be seen.

Rotations

I haven’t generally gone done alot on rotations but here’s a 2 way and 3 way defensive rotation up to GW19 I did in my recent EBook “preparing for FPL 17/18”

The fixture in green is the most favourable for a clean sheet and PCS means there is some clean sheet potential for the fixture.  I’ve concentrated on fixture quality than strict home rotation only.

Summary and best prospects

  • Huddersfield were 5th in the Championship coming up through the play offs.  Stats in the Championship suggest this will be a difficult year for goals and defence
  •         5  new signings and 2 players reuniting after last season gives further strength and depth but still hard to see it not being a difficult season at both ends of the pitch
  •         Good fixtures to start is helpful.
  •         New Fwd Mounie looks a good prospect but new strikers outside the top sides are fraught with uncertain returns.
  •          New signing Ince looks the best bet in the attacking midfield 3 and has some previous premier league experience although not particularly successful
  •         Poor clean sheet prospects make defensive investment a risk.  However there maybe value there for rotations and Lowe, if cheap, does provide some set piece potential.  Smith has attacking potential if you’re willing to take the clean sheet risk and pay a likely premium.
