Fantasy premier league – Questions and Answers – part 6

Preseason

Hi here’s my fantasy premier league Questions and Answers continued.  I’ve tried to pick out ones that arent rate my team although I will return to those tomorrow.   It’s impossible to keep up with all the Q and a at the moment but I am trying to get back to as many as possible.  Thanks for your patience.

Questions were answered on Monday 12th August in the evening in case youre reading later and its outdated

Q1

Do you think I should get at least 1 player from Spurs, Everton & West Ham?

A1

Hi  mate,  I’m answering this from an attacking perspective.  No not all of them.  I think that Spurs is essential and in the upcoming absence of Bale, Soldado is my pick.  Everton isn’t essential in my mind.  A West Ham defender is desirable but only Collins has value at £4.5m.  Someone from City with their fixtures is essential.  Dzeko is my pick or Silva.  Arsenal is also essential.  Walcott is my pick unquestionably.  Liverpool is desirable with Coutinho being the pick and Sterling being a cheaper choice if selected

Dont think anyone else is essential even Man Utd due to their tricky start.

Cheers and hope that helps

Q2

How do you feel about Soldado in a starting lineup? I’m getting worried because it shows less than 5% of managers own him but to me he seems like a great buy!

A2

Hi, I wouldnt worry about ownership.  New players often have low %ownership.  What do you think michu’s was last year before GW1?    Yeah Soldado’s a great pick for me.  Above is the link to my article on him.  24 goals in la liga last year with Valencia.  5th top scorer behind Messi Ronaldo Falcao and Negredo.  He shouldnt be rotated too much in the league either.  I thought he looked good last week against Espanyol.  Judging from that game he will also take pens by the look of it.  Spurs have great fixtures.  I’m assuming Bale is going and Soldado is the replacement for me

It’s not just me that thinks that.  As I look on the William Hill site now Soldado is 14/1 to be the top goal scorer 3rd behind RVP  at 7/2 and Aguero at 8/1 and ahead of Benteke and Sturridge at 16/1 and Lukaku/Negredo at 25/1which shows you how seriously he’s been taken as a goal scoring threat.

Hope that convinces you!

Q3

Would it be possible for you to run through the teams and give your view on their likely starting 11 and the best fantasy options in them? Great site! Thanks

A3

Hi thanks for the nice comments.  I’ve run through the lineups and thats on the site now.  Tomorrow I’ll be doing my “ones to watch” in each position to show the best players in each position.

Cheers

Q4

I am really curious will you chose for your team Coutinho or Silva (from GW2)

A4

Hi mate, Firstly I like both.  Coutinho is an excellent all round player and with Rodgers talking about him playing best centrally and with the good fixtures I will be trying to get him in my team.  Silva is my player of choice for City due to rotation among the strikers but Dzekos pre-season gametime and value plus Pellegrini talking him up makes him very tempting.  He can also score as a sub so with that value and that ability he’s tempting to be my City coverage from a budget perspective meaning I wont need to have Silva in my team.

Hope that helps

Q5

Hi there,
Love your site. When do you post your team decision on game day? Is it before the deadline? Thanns

A5

Yes I will post my final team on all formats before the gameweek deadline.  In fact you’ll probably see more than you care for as I change my mind!

Q6

Hi John,

Absolutely great site, excellent recommendations and quality analysis.

Would love to pick your brains on a few of the Arsenal variables.
I agree with your previous comments regarding the underestimated strength of the Gunners defence and your preference of Sagna over the other wing backs. That said, I’d find it hard to pick him – my defensive question really lies on the choice between Mertesacker and Koscielny. I feel that current form would surely suggest that the latter is the more probable first teamer and that any new addition to the back line would more likely challenge the German. With this in mind, I’m slightly baffled by the current % selection of Mertesacker.. Am I missing something?
In regards to midfield, it seems again a crux between Cazorla and Theo for a premium player from the team and again, Cazorla seems to be second choice despite competing in every league game last year.
Finally, is it just me, or is Wilshere incredibly undervalued?
Elsewhere I think the best sleeper pick is Liverpool’s Lucas at a snip at 4.5!

Would be great to get your advice on the above.
Thanks,

A6

Hi thanks for the kind comments.  I picked Sagna through gametime security as I think Jenkinson is the weakest cover for the back 4 out of the other options.  I still think Vermaelen, desite being reckless in coming for intercepting the ball and in his positional play has the ability to come back and challenge for a first team spot.  I can also see Sagnas attacking returns improving as he gets forward in to the space that Walcott vacates when he drifts centrally.  I agree with you though Koscielny is the safer of the 2 given his late season form and his goal scoring record.

I think Walcott plays further forward and is more consistent than Cazorla who is a streaky scorer.

I was hoping Wilshere would play behind the striker but pre-season has put that out of my head.  If you were being negative, such is the form of Ramsey and Wengers careful treatment of Wilshere you could make an argument that unless Wenger plays 4-3-3 then Wilshere isnt guaranteed a place.

The Sky passing bonus and tackle points means that Lucas is a great buy but he’s too deep for me either in the 2 of 4-2-3-1 or the midfield 3 of 4-3-3 and tends to sit while Gerrard goes forward so he’s not really an option for me

Cheers

 Q7

Emanuele Giaccherini

What do you think?

Your site is way better than fantasycheat and I was wandering what you thought?

I have him alongside Silva, Hazard, Walcott, and Morrison? I was thinking about using Ramires for GW1 and switching him in GW2>

A7

Hi, thanks for the comments.

I think he has a good record and pedigree.  I’m just reluctant to pay £7m for a player who plays so wide in ateam that went to the brink of relegation last year.  Nolan or Mirallas would be better bets for that money for me.

Like Silva (although he may not play GW1) Hazard and Walcott plus Ravel or James?   Ramires will probably play in the defensive midfield rather than the attacking part. thats why I’m reluctant.   Its all going to be a bit of a lottery with GW2 being the United match but at the moment I’m going for Mata and Hazard as the big hitters who consistently scored last year.
