fantasy premier league tips – “One mans pain is another mans gain” – injuries that benefit other players

Fantasy Premier League

Here’s 7 players who look to be injured at the start of the season.  We look at the players that will benefit for our FPL GW1 team and whether that creates a bargain or certainty for another player.  For the avoidance of doubt no one would wish injury on any player but it’s a fact of a footballers life and does create chances for others to play

Alvaro Negredo

Out to the end of December with a broken Metatarsal. – Beneficiary Dzeko £8.5m

City have 4 strikers in Ageuro, Dzeko, Negredo and Jovetic.  All of them have rotation risk. Pellegrini has in the main played 2 strikers last year and when Ageuro was fit him and Dzeko were first choice.  The Negredo injury lessens the rotation risk for Dzeko and coupled with Agueros late return from the World Cup rest means it’s hard to see Dzeko not lining up in GW1 for City.  Jovetics 2 goals and Pellegrini’s praise afterwards isn’t helpful but Dzeko is in a good position to start.

Adam Lallana

Out to mid September with a knee injury – Benefits: Coutinho £8.0m or Markovic £7.5m

I think Rodgers will play 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1.  Lallana would have definitely lined up either way had he not been injured.  If Rodgers go 4-3-3 then Sterling will line up along side Sturridge and Markovic or Coutinho will battle out for the other flank.  If Rodgers goes 4-2-3-1 it’s quite likely both could play now in the attacking 3.  The puzzle isn’t clear but preseason will definitely help and we’ll be looking out for this specifically.

Andy Carroll

Out to December with an ankle injury.  Benefits Enner Valencia £7.0m

Personally I couldn’t see how Big Sam was going to play 2 strikers.  I’m not sure his heart could have stood it.  This opens the way for Valencia to play as the central striker in a 4-3-3 type formation. His fitness will be key though as Big Sam isn’t keen on anyone playing not 100%.   It may also mean that he only plays with Downing and has a non winger in say Diame on the other flank.  The double winger situation was more for Carroll.

Southampton (H)
Hull (A)
Liverpool (H)
Man Utd (A)

Benteke

Out until October with an Achilles injury.  Benefits: Possibly Darren Bent £5.0m

Amazing to think that in 2011/12 Darren Bent  finished the season at £9.5m and in 2009/10 he scored 24 goals and 4 assists. Bent has started preseason well scoring 2 goals in his first 3 pre-season games.  There seems to be a long history of ambivalence to Bent from Lambert but with Kozak injured is he really going to rely on Agbonlahor or Weimann for a central striking position?  We’ll keep tabs on this in pre-season

Stoke (A)
Newcastle (H)
Hull (H)
Liverpool (A)
Arsenal (H)
Chelsea (A)

Jay Rodriguez

Out until November with an ACL injury.  Benfits;  Graziano Pelle £7.5m

I think Pelle would have started anyway as Rodriguez wasn’t the central striker that Pelle is but with Osvaldo seemingly on his way out again and Gallagher to young to lead the line this should erase any doubt over Pelle’s prospects.

Liverpool (A)
West Brom (H)
West Ham (A)
Newcastle (H)
Swansea (A)
QPR (H)

Michael Carrick

An ankle injury which will keep him out to Mid October.  Benefits  Kagawa  £6.5m or  Fellaini £6.5m or Fletcher £5.0m

Needs more preseason to sort this out.  Assuming LVG sticks to 3-5-2 and the 5 are Shaw, Valencia on the flanks,   Mata as a CAM and  Herrara as 1 of 2 deep lying mids.  There is space for 1 other.  That could be Kagawa in a deeper role as he did for Dortmund at times or Fellaini as he unsucessfully did last seasopn or Fletcher who has done it in the past.  Kagawa and Fellaini aren’t really that good value for that position but Fletcher at that price could be a box to box player who does get the odd goal.  In Sky Sports fantasy football he could also pick up pass and tackle bonus points.

Swansea (H)
Sunderland (A)
Burnley (A)
QPR (H)
Leicester (A)
West Ham (H)

Davide Santon

Has a knee injury and out until sometime in September.  Benefits:  Dummett £4.0m if he can get ahead of Haidara £4.5m

At the moment Haidara is beating Dummet to the LB spot but it’s worth monitoring as Dummett could even have some set piece responsibility if he gets into the side. Pre-season needs checking though

Man City (H)
Aston Villa (A)
Crystal Palace (H)
Southampton (A)
Hull (H)
Stoke (A)

Thats it.  Hope you found it useful for your FPL team.  I’ll update it later before the start of  the season.
