Fantasy Premier League

Here’s our weekly fantasy premier league wildcard tips article where we pretend we have a wildcard to use in gameweek 21.  It allows us to give player suggestions with a bit more longeveity than the next gameweek

fantasy premier league wildcard tips – our imaginary wildcard for GW21

So firstly I would say that I don’t believe now is the time to use the 2nd wildcard which is available for the rest of the season.  Here’s a link to our article on the 2nd wildcard and some thoughts related to it

Here’s the team.  Below I’ll put the team with some brief narrative below it on my reasoning.  There wont be detailed stats on each player as they are covered in recent “ones to watch” articles and “best defenders” articles.  You can find links to them on the “recent entries” box in the right had sidebar of the site.  The total cost of the team is around £104m

GK/Defence

I’ve treated defence and goalkeeper as a group and tried to get representation from each of the best defensive sides in the league.  I feel that if you have enough good quality defensive teams represented in the most cost efficent way then there isn’t a need for focusing on the short term with immediate fixtures or having sides in there that you wouldn’t necessarily want to meet a home and away rotation.

With Aguero back on the scene I’ve tried to go for the cheapest gametime secure version of the defence to save on funds.  I’ve still end ed up with 1 filler in Simpson to save cash where I probably would have preffered a City or Chelsea defender.

The only team I’ve really missed out on is Man Utd.  With Blind and Young often playing and classified as midfielders and Smalling costing £6.8m that only leaves 1 spot and it’s not easy to predict who will take that.  Jones would be ideal at £5.0m but when he looks like he can make the position his own he then goes and gets injured which isn’t helpful to say the least.  Darmian seems totally persona non grata as far as LVG is concerned and only in the team when there is no other option.  Or at least no other option thats not a teenager. Injuries to Rojo, Shaw and Velncia also aren’t helpful.  GK De Gea would give that option of coverage but at £5.6m and only the 8th top point scoring GK 30 points behind Butland he seems to be an expensive luxury with Aguero around.

Moreno is my other doubt with the number of injuries currently in the Liverpool defence.  However I’ve stuck with him due to value and attacking potential and with the hope that Liverpool will improve defensively.

The midfield

Firstly I went for a 5 man midfield.  With Alli and Anotonio both being reasonable pricedalternatives for the 5th spot it seemed a logical step forward to have decent cover for injuries.

While I hate the decision making involved with having a “proper” 5th midfielder and seeing a bundle of points on the bench when you make the wrong decision I think you’ve got 2 choices.  The first is make 1 person your bench player and then just accept that he is the bench player full stop.  That at least takes the agonising out of it.  The 2nd option is to have a decison making process for who you pick and accept that sometimes you will get it wrong.

The midfield picked it self except for the De Bruyne/Yaya debate.  I went for De Bruyne as the safer choice due to his high ownership and ability to score big at home with 2 home games to follow.  That trumped Yaya’s better consistency and recent form

The forwards

Some debate about the fitness of Lukaku this week which I’ve ignored.  He’s just been too good to drop in my mind even if he misses the City game.

I’ve gone for Aguero then as despite his injury and inconsitent record he has the potential to single handedly rescue a season such is his quality.

The remaining debate is Ighalo vs Kane.  Ighalo has by far the better stats although you can make a case for Kane if you ignore his first 9 fixtures.  Kane has last season and fixtures in his favour.  Ighalo has form and season stats to date and higher ownership.  Interestingly 10/10 of the top 10 managers I follow have Kane.  None have Ighalo

Ownership vs Differentials

In my article below on ownership and team structure I talked about the balance between ownership and differentials to avoid rank drops but have enough differences to still effectively move forward

http://www.fantasyfootballgeek.co.uk/fantasy-premier-league-tips-a-few-musings-on-rank-volatility-ownership-and-team-structure/

Here the high ownership players covered in an attacking sense are

Mahrez, Ozil, De Bruyne, Ighalo and Lukaku.  The only high ownership players ignored are Barkley and to some extent Vardy

The differentials attacking wise become Payet, Alli and Aguero.

Hope that’s interesting and it helps you with your transfer thoughts.  Remember detail on the players is in the “ones to watch” articles on the best defences articles in the links in the recent entries box in the right sidebar of the site
