FPL value players – which players offer the best value for money?

Here we look  for FPL value players ie which players have provided the best value for their cost in fantasy premier league.  We then divide them into categories so you can assess them for your FPL team.  Lastly we make 2 FPL teams based on these calculations.

FPL value players – which players offer the best value for money?

So here we’ve tried to look at a players cost, the amount of points they’ve produced and the number of minutes played to try and assess which players are the best value.  That produces a value factor which we use to rate the players value for money.

We then categorise them by type of player and then we provide a couple of FPL teams to illustrate the findings

Just a warning the player values are a couple of days old but I don’t think it changes anything

So I’ve sorted the players by a minimum number of FPL points and then calculated the value factor.  I added in a few players that haven’t had much gametime , primarily due to injury, underneath that points threshold.  There’s just over 100

It’s very simplistic and is bias for cheap players.  That is why you need to take the next step and divide them into categories.  You hen use the data for a team structure

The stats aren’t filtered by fitness or gametime security it’s all players over a FPL point threshold plus a few more

The schedule headings are pretty self explanatory and the players are ordered by best value factor to worst.  Here’s the link to the google spreadsheet for the 100 players.

Now before you disagree and send me comments saying how flawed the analysis is.  Yes it is simplistic.  That is why we then use it in categories next and in a team structure context.  It doesn’t factor is sustainability and team structure

An interesting example is Salah v Surman.  No one could tell me that I should have Surman in my team instead of Salah.  However Surman is half the price Salah is, played roughly the same minutes but scored more than half the points Salah has.  So therefore in a technical sense Surman is better value for money.

The value for money team

Rules:

Players with the best value factor

Must be reasonably gametime secure (I’ve excluded Man City from this rule and allowed B Davies in)

Only 1 player per team per position

Normal FPL rules around numbers and value apply

This team leaves £6.1m in the bank.

fpl value players

As I said above, this team leaves £6.1m in the bank.  That shows that my simplistic analysis does favour the cheaper players and you why you have to put them into positions and then put in place a normal team structure.

A structured team

Rules:

Players with the best value factor within a team structure of

2 cheap GKs

2 premium and 3 cheap defenders

1 cheap mid, 1 mid range and 3 premium

2 premium forwards and 1 cheap

Must be reasonably gametime secure (I’ve excluded Man City from this rule and allowed B Davies in)

Only 1 player per team per position

Normal FPL rules around numbers and value apply

fpl value players

This team has a value of £102.3m

A few observations

Firstly this is meant to be another tool in your decision making process and not an all encompassing stat.

Probably the first thing that strikes you is how poorly Kane and Lukaku are ranked considering they will probably be contesting the golden boot.  They have been captain favourites due to their scoring potential and gametime security.  The above team does have captain potential if you’re willing to gamble on Aguero’s gametime and accept Morata and Salah as captain options.  On those assumptions then you can lose both Kane and Lukaku.

Obviously what this doesn’t do is look forward to fixtures.  It’s totally rear facing.  However it does show that Lukaku and Kane aren’t fixture proof and can be rotated in your teams for fixtures. Lukaku and Kane are both coming up to a good run of fixtures btw.

Again this is a rear facing analsyis.  If you believe that the first 11 gameweeks aren’t representative of a players form then it doesn’t factor this in.  That’s perhaps relevant if you think Hazard and Sanchez are working up to their best form.

Hope you found it interesting and if you’ve got any constructive views then please leave them in the comments column

Excellent article! Even though it is simplistic, it serves the purpose of highlighting our goto value picks nicely.

The only thing I can think of to enhance this analysis, is by capturing the changes in player prices over time. For example, Phil Jones’ clean sheet when he was 5.0m would have contributed to a better “value factor” than when he does give us a clean sheet now for 5.5m. What I am trying to include here is a weighted average kind of a thing, which would calculate player points divided by the price he had going into that gameweek. I don’t know if that would be possible, but that may contribute to a more accurate “value factor”

But thank you once again for coming up with this article. It is absolutely insightful.

    Great stuff,
thanks very much for the article, I’ve been waiting for that kind of articles since the FPL started.
It shows and confirmed that money doesn’t play and if you allocate your budget smart you can get excellent results without most expensive players.
Can’t wait to see more stats,if that’s possible for example,PPV and upcoming fixtures together.
    Thanks again.

Interesting. Thanks for taking the time to do it.

You have Knockaert in the wrong table. He’ll make a fine edition to the up to 6m mids!
