Rob Reid (aka the FPL Vet) with his fantasy premier league gameweek 2 player picks

Hi and welcome to my Gameweek 2 Player Picks. For each gameweek, I’ll be picking out 3 players in distinct player selection categories.

One Banker – this will take form and the fixture ease schedule into account and is a player who I think is a must for the next few gameweeks and should provide a steady stream of points.

One Ace – a player who I think has a good chance of scoring big this week. I’ll take form, this weeks fixtures and the bookies odds into account here.

One Joker – a player who is a bit of punt but I think may surprise a few people. Might be a low ownership player, someone coming back from injury or just a bit of a gut feeling on my part – there will be no evidence base on this one! This player could be a good one week hit for draft or for a draft waiver as well.

I’ll keep a tally each week of how things are going – I’ll analyse the Banker over 4 GWs, the other 2 will just be on a weekly basis. Wish me luck and here goes!

Gameweek 1 Review

Banker – Fraser Forster (Southampton £5m ) – 1 clean sheet = 6 points.

A solid start for the big Saints stopper. I’ll keep track of him until GW4.

Ace – Sergio Aguero (Man City £11.5m) – 1 goal and 3 Bonus Points = 9 points.

A good start from the reliable Kun. Got in plenty of good positions and had more chances to score – write him off at your peril. Well done to those of you who went for him and Lukaku rather than favouring Kane.

Joker – Christian Atsu (Newcastle £5.0) – 2 points

Only 2 points from the Ghanaian as Newcastle struggled to break down a resolute Spurs defence. He got plenty of ball in advanced positions though and I still fancy him to do well against a poorer defence, from his heat map I suspect he’ll be more of an assist player though.

Gameweek 2 Picks

Banker – Romelu Lukaku (£11.6m swa)

There’s always a worry when a player moves clubs that they won’t carry the same form, or fit into a new system. These worries were firmly dispelled against West Ham when he emphatically buried his first chance of the game and then scored a confident header in the second half. He certainly looks primed to go on good run with a nice set of fixtures coming up. The first of these is away to Swansea who somehow managed to scramble a 0-0 with Southampton last weekend, despite the Saints having 29 shots. Don’t expect Man Utd to be as profligate this week if they’re served up the same number of opportunities, especially with a firing Rom leading the line. With his high ownership and rising price, FPL managers walk a dangerous road by not selecting him.

Ace – Sadio Mane (£9.5m CPL)

I would expect another high-scoring encounter at Anfield this weekend as Liverpool’s free-scoring attack encounter a Palace defence that conceded 3 at home to Huddersfield last week. Palace have been a bogey team for Liverpool in previous years, but I don’t expect the same this weekend. Salah and Firminho could be at the forefront of this, but I favour Mane to steal the biggest point haul in this fixture. To be fair though, any of these 3 attacking threats could have taken the Ace slot this week!

Joker – Aaron Mooy (£5.5m NEW)

Huddersfield certainly looked impressive in their first Premier League fixture, ruthlessly dispatching Crystal Palace. Steve Mounie’s 2 goals really stood out, but I’ve picked Mooy out for this week as the Terriers entertain Newcastle. He led the statistics for key passes at Selhurst Park and he would also make a good replacement for those looking to sell either the suspended Fabregas or the potentially injured Zaha. I also expect he’ll be more likely to be available on a Waiver for those playing Draft. This could be a tight game, but Newcastle have 2 defenders injured and defensive midfield Shelvey suspended which should allow Mooy plenty of creative opportunities.

Good luck this week everyone!
