sun dream team 17/18 tips – a first draft team

There’s a few new rules to Sun Dream team this season so read my rules article to familiarise yourself if you aren’t aware.

The first draft team

Here’s the first draft.  Just to warn you it will change as it is a very early stage of the season

So apart from the GK who was a fill in at the end I’ve started by managing to get all the players from the top 7 teams who have European competition. So here’s a look at the various aspects of the team.

Liverpool and Everton coverage is important as they have European qualification games early on which will earn extra points.  There will be a fixture article coming up soon

Defence

It’s crucial to get players in from the top teams who’s place has been handed to them due to an injury to another player.

Ben Davies

Ben Davies starts as Danny Rose is injured with a MCL knee Ligament injury although apparently due back in gameweek 2.  I’ll believe that when I see it.  Although I’m a big admirer of Pochettino he’s shown himself to be someone who can’t be trusted to tell the truth about the injuries to his players.  Danny Rose also has a terrible injury record.

Holgate

Holgate played at the end of last season due to the Coleman injury.  Coleman has no return date.  Holgate is great value at £2m.  The additional purchase by Everton of Keane does give Everton the chance to play 3 at the back which could be an issue for Holgates place but pre-season will help in that respect.

Matip

I’ve gone for Matip as my Liverpool cover in defence.  He’s the same price as Clyne but absolutely kills him on PPG 3.2 vs 2.3.  He’s also first choice in my mind.  James Milner will be an interesting one classified as a defender if he can get a regular role in midfield.  That assumes Klopp ever gets around to buying an LB

Lindelof

I’ve gone for Lindelof for Man Utd defensive coverage at the moment.  I like Valencia but his points per game at 2.3 is an absolute disaster.  Lindelof needs to prove he is first choice among the 5 CBs (although Rojo has no return date from injury at the moment) but Man Utd do have a number of big games pre-season which should give us a hint at Mourinho’s first choice. Sun Dream Team love Blind if he can make the side

Midfield

Coutinho

Coutinho is my Liverpool midfielder.  Salah is a great price at £4m but he seems more rotation prone than Coutinho with a like for like in Mane in the team.  Coutinho is the heartbeat of the team with set pieces and will see alot of the ball.  whoscored who do the ratings absolutely love him as well.

Sane

I went for Sane for value and because after his first season he should be a big improver.  Everyone is a rotation risk in the City team but Sane held his place well towards the end of the season.  Sane’s points per game may look poor but it’s distorted by a number of early season sub appearances.  De Bruyne would be my natural pick but I’m not sure Sun Dream Team really helps players who assist alot but score little.  He was great last season when around the £4m as his price dropped but his PPG isn’t great for the price.  Keep an eye out for Bernardo Silva who comes with a big reputation at the same price as Sane.  By the way there are 2 Silvas in midfield so make sure you pick the one you want.

Ozil

Considering what a dreadful season he had Ozil’s figures weren’t too bad.  He was ahead of De Bruyne in PPG for example.  The 3-4-2-1 formation Wenger played towrads the end of the season suited him as it pushed him more centrally and took away his defensive duties.  I say took away but that implied he ever bothered doing them in the first place.  Don’t get me wrong I’d have Sanchez all day long instead but you can’t have everyone.  Hard to see Ozil playing in the Europa League though.

Strikers

Jesus

Don’t get me wrong I’m Aguero’s biggest fan but Jesus is just such good value he’s impossible to ignore at £2m cheaper than Aguero.  He also navigated his first season successfully  and must surely improve for the experience.  Position will be crucial.  I’m not so sure I’d be as keen if he’s shoved out on the right as he was in the last game of last season.

Lukaku

Surprisingly good value.  I thought he could easily be 7.  A transfer to Man Utd or Chelsea would be a huge bonus as it’s hard to see him playing in alot of the Europa League games.  Everton will want to win it but I just can’t see Koeman wanting to over play him with all the travelling etc if he stays.

Kane

Hard not to even at this price.  The risk is that he starts slowly which he has done before and Spurs struggle at Wembley.  That will lead to a value drop after 3 games.  So you may want to gamble that this happens and pick him up cheaper.  For me he could easily stay in the team for the whole season if he doesn’t get injured so price to me is pretty irrelevant.  It would have to take a Spurs Wembley disaster for it to be a problem

Who isn’t in the team

Sanchez

I don’t like the thought of not having Sanchez in the team.  The good thing is that it seems inconceivable he will play in the Europa League.  He does seem to have a veto over being left out or subbed but I just can’t see him being risked.  He’s classified as a striker and £7.5m for a guy who doesn’t lead the line and probably won’t take pens with Lacazette joining just seems too much.

No Chelsea player

Hazard was just too expensive at £7m but him not being in the team doesn’t sit well.  I thought about Pedro who’s keenly priced at £4m but striker places are too precious to waste on a midfielder who’s not Sanchez.  The defence is just mind boggling expensive.

No Man Utd attacking player

Apart from Pogba who knows who will play from game to game.  A striker joining could be an option though depending on price.  Lukaku would be perfect.  Pogba could be freed up to play further forward if a proper CDM joins but £6m is pretty rich unless a move forward starts bring goals and assists.  Otherwise it relies on him playing lots of games and whoscored continuing their love affair with him.

Eriksen

A real Sun favourite but with the risks around Spurs Kane is enough money invested for the moment

No Southampton player

They have great fixtures to start.  I wanted to put a defender in.  Probably Soares but stuck with the European teams.  I also really like Charlie Austin and at £2.5m with those early fixtures he’s a steal and by GW3 could really move up in price.  He just needs to get in the new managers team and show he’s not rusty after the major injury he faced.  Tadic is mind boggling cheap at £2.0m for a guy with his talent and fixtures.  If he could only put the huge amount of chances he gets in the net he would be a star.  I do a fixture ease article for FPL which is a useful guide for who has good premier league fixtures to start.

If you play fantasy premier league buy our 57 page EBook ” a guide to FPL in 17/18″. There’s loads of graphics and stats on 150+ players from last season.  There is a small Sun Dream Team 17/18 tips section in the book too.  It’s only £3
