The Europa League

The Europa League is enticing fixture wise.  4 extra games against 2nd rate European compeition should be a points bonanza but unfortunately the worse the opposition the more rotation that takes place and getting the selection right is a bit of a lottery.  So in some ways the tougher the draw the more likely that something resembling a full team will turn out.  The idea is to try and find players who have no rotation partner.  However both Spurs and Liverpool have decent size squads and to me it seems more likely both will have Champions League ambitions.  My feeling at the moment it’s more likely they will look to pursue this through a top 4 finish rather than winning the Europa League.

Here’s the 4 games for each team:

Liverpool:  Bordeaux (a), Sion (Switzerland) (h), Rubin (Russia) (h), Rubin (a)

Tottenham:  Qarabağ (Azerbaijan) (h), Monaco (a), Anderlecht (a), Anderlecht (h)

So if you believe it’s better to have tough games then both teams have that.

For Tottenham, Monaco and Anderlecht were in Arsenals Champions League Group last year and put in strong performances.  This may force more limited rotation which is good news.  For Spurs the first game looks easy which could see mass rotation but taking any risk with that fixture with the others coming up is a big risk.  The good news as well is that the travelling in 3 of the 4 games is very limited which is a big boost to limit rotation

For Liverpool travelling to Russia isn’t easy bit they also have 3 difficult games and will mass rotate at their peril.

The Champions League

The Champions League is so importnat to the 4 teams that it generally means limited rotation and although the opposition is more difficult than say the Europa League that again limits rotation.  Here’s the fixtures

Man City:  Juventus (h), Mönchengladbach (a), Sevilla (h),  Sevilla (a)

Man Utd:   PSV (a),  Wolfsburg (h), CSKA Moscow (a), CSKA Moscow (h)

Arsenal:  Zagreb (a), Olympiacos (h), Bayern (h), Bayern (a)

Chelsea:  Tel-Aviv (h), Porto (a), Dynamo Kiev (a), Dynamo Kiev (h)

Interesting groups.  Man City probably have the hardest group but such is the strength of the squad that rotation of some players still looks likely.  The difficulty of games though may limit the key players rotation.

Arsenals Group is interesting with 2 relatively easy games against 2 very hard ones.  Rotation will surely happen in the first 2 but the full team will play against Bayern.  Again the squad is big enough to rotate.

Chelsea and Man Utd have the easiest of the 4 groups and also with the most travelling so this could mean the most rotation in these 2 teams

The Capital One Cup

The Capital One Cup is really about picking teams that want to win it and wont rotate.  The last round showed that Everton, Sunderland and Villa played strong teams.  I can see the sides that realistically wont make the top 4/6 but won’t have any relegation issues that will concetrate on this competition.  I can see Swansea, Palace, Stoke, Everton all concentrating on the Capital One Cup.  Interesting they all have good fixtures in the next round.
