Sun Dream Team

It’s worth looking back at last season’s top 20 player point scorers in Sun Dream Team to get a view on what teams we should spend on money on and what positions are the most fruitful for points.  Here’s the article attempting to give you some assistance by looking back at last season

Sun Dream Team – analysing the top 20 point scoring players of 2013/14

Firstly here’s the top 20 point scorers in Sun Dream Team.  Unfortunately I couldn’t get 20 in and the headers without making it unreasonably small.  The position heading is obvious and then the last 2 are the only relevant ones in value and points.

So to help I’m going to analyse it in a number of different ways and then draw some conclusions.

By position

0/20 are GKS

5/20 are defenders

8/20 are midfielders

7/20 are strikers

The top 8 are all strikers and midfielders.  Obviously Suarez having transfered to Barca is not included so would have added 1 striker to this.

So it’s pretty obvious we should be concentrating our funds on strikers and midfielders.  However we have to remember that players get negative points for goals conceded after 1 goal so the defensive positions can’t be ighnored.  GKs are where to save money.

By European representation

16 out of 20 of the players were in the European competitions.  Only Lallana, Sturridge, Gerrard and Coleman were from outside the European teams group.  Interestingly none of above 4 players were in teams that did particularly well in the domestic cups to top up points.  The domestic cup final teams were Man City vs Sunderland in the Capital One and Arsenal v Hull in the FA Cup.  Neither Hull or Sunderland had a player in that top 20.

Differentiating between the Europa League and the Champions league is interesting.  Only Wilfreid Bony of Swansea was from the Europa League teams.  15/16 were from the Champions league.  None were from Spurs.  One the face of the Europa League you think fantastic, loads of additional games against poor opponents yet rotation plays such a significant part that no one apart from Bony (who Laudrup didn’t really start in the early part of the premier league) has showed up.

The lesson here is that the Champions league teams should dominate your squad as they play extra games and the quality of the competition means they will still play rather than rotate and rest.  The Europa league and the domestic cups are prone to rotation and the successful teams in these competitions aren’t represented above.

By Star Man awards

I looked at the top 15 players (those who had 5 Star Man awards or more) with the most Star Man awards.  11 of the 15 were in the top 20 scorers above making it a reasonable correlation for scoring overall.  Interestingly the 4 who weren’t in it were Barkley which is a good pointer now for them being in the Europa League.  The other 3 were Huddlestone and Long obviously benefitting from the Cup run but still couldn’t get in the top 20 scorers.  Lastly of the 4 Eriksen who had such great form late on.

By Club

Manchester City had 6 attacking players in the team. They and Liverpool both led the way in attacking teams scoring over 100 goals and 30 more goals than the 3rd placed team.  (thats 43% more than the 3rd top scoring teams).  Liverpool had 3 players in that top 20 if you count the absent Suarez despite not being in Europe and doing nothing in the domestic cups.  Worth thinking about the attacking teams.

The best defensive team by far was Chelsea.  Despite rotation 2 of the 5 players were in the top scoring defenders as were 2 of Arsenal despite not being the 2nd best defence overall although they didn’t have the 2nd best clean sheet record behind Chelsea.

By type of player

4 of the 5 defenders were CBs

Hard to correlate midfilders.  Some were box to box like Ramsey and YYT.  Some were p[layers on the flank who came in such as Hazard, Nasri and Silva.  Interestingly only Lallana was a number 10 type player

Strikers were hard to correlate as well.  Some were pure strikers like Sturridge and Dzeko.  Others were players more involved who could drop off like Aguero and Rooney.

By premier league top 10 goal scorers

Keeping an eye on the top goal scorers list in the premier league is another correlation.  8 of the 10 were in the 20.  Those that weren’t were Lukaku and Rodriguez who were outside of Europe.

Summary

  • Strikers and Midfielders dominate the top 20 so invest the bulk of your money there
  • The Champions league teams dominate the top 20.  The Europa league teams are poorly represented
  • Watch the Star Man awards and the top goal scorers during the year.  A reasonable correlation
  • Difficult to define a type of player favoured apart from CBs over FBs
