As the season rapidly approaches, FFG has asked for my thoughts on team selection, and strategy. As my strategy tends to be similar to FFG, I wont go overboard and repeat what’s gone before, but will give my thoughts on what I will be looking for.

Goalkeepers

Starting at the back with goalkeepers, I don’t see to much value in spending a fortune on a keeper. While keepers for top teams tend to get more clean sheets, they also tend to get less star man awards, and less 7+ ratings, as they have less to do during matches. Also, Mourinho, Pelligrini, Rodgers and Wenger all swapped their keepers about, in one way or another, so game time isn’t guaranteed. Lloris and Forster are both injured, and the DeGea transfer saga still rumbles on, so I think last years top 7 offer no value. Teams that I think will be in the bottom 5 or 6, I will also avoid, due to the amount of possible goals conceded. Therefore, what I will be looking for is a midtable keeper, who has no selection issues, will keep clean sheets, but who’s defence allows enough chances to help boost his number of saves, and so boost his ratings. The obvious selections to me are Butland, Krul, Myhill (until Foster returns) and Adrian.

Defence

My defence will probably consist of all the usual teams, such as Chelsea, Arsenal, and the like, as will most. However, with the addition of assists this year, there appears to be 2 ways of building the defence. Usually I would choose the most likely goal scorer, from the best possible defences, which tend to be centre backs. However, with assists now counting, attacking full backs come into their own, and attacking full backs, who score regularly, I expect to be highly prized. So people like Ivanovic, Coleman, Baines, and  Cresswell will probably be in most teams. However, that doesn’t mean centre backs should be forgotten. If you look at say, for instance, Clyne and Skrtel at Liverpool, if both play the same number of games, keeping the same number of clean sheets, and conceding the same number of goals, but Skrtel scores 5 goals, Clyne would need 13 assists to outscore Skrtel. Admittedly, Clyne may also score goals, but Skrtel may get assists at corners, so this needs to be taken into consideration, but I think shows that centre backs are still worth considering.

Midfield

The midfield, in most peoples teams, will almost certainly have Hazard, and anyone not selecting him, I think is taking a huge gamble. As with the defence, assists this year, make choosing the midfield a tricky affair. Usually, all I would look for in a midfielder is how many goals, and consistent ratings. However, with assists, I think things change slightly. People like Tadic at Southampton, who didn’t score to many goals, but assisted a lot of goals, become possible choices. Silva, Sterling, Ozil, Depay and Mane will all feature highly I think as well. If Walcott can nail down a starting spot all season, he could easily score well over 200 points this season as well.

Forwards

The forwards choice, to start with, provides some difficulties I think. As Aguero and Sanchez appear unlikely to start game week 1, and will then probably build up game time over the next few week, I’m ignoring them, until the first transfer window. Of the other top teams, this leaves Costa, Rooney and Benteke as obvious options. I’m not certain Kane can repeat last years feats, especially after playing for the under 21s during the summer. Giroud is a game time risk, Sturridge is out injured, Man City appear to be selling Jovetic and maybe Dzeko, all of which narrows down possible selection choices. Pelle seems to be a popular selection at the minute, but with Europa league football possibly to come, and Southampton appearing to have many forwards on their books, I think he is a game time risk as well. As I want my forwards to have as many matches, and therefore goal scoring chances as possible, I wont personally look at any forward who wont be playing in Europe, at least until after the champions league group stage has finished.
