Below I’ve put together a table of 10 Sun Dream Team World Cup 2014 elite midfield options. Also to come will be a list of cheapie midfielders and a few gamble midfielders. With the Sun format not allowing substitutions and no transfers during the Group stages and only 8 thereafter I’ve tried to concentrate on midfielders who have gametime security for their teams. I’ve also tried to look for players in teams who have a fighting chance of getting through to the knockouts and will attract Star Man awards as standout players for their countries.
Sun Dream Team World Cup 2014 – 10 elite midfield options
The table has a key below it to help you make a decision as to who is best for your team. I’ve also put a narrative below that on the player and tried to highlight any injury doubts as well as give you a general picture of the type of player they are. My recent general post on the 9 best teams for the Group stages also has good information on the best teams and players for the Group stages

All Intl App/Goals: The total number of International appearances and goals
WC Qualf App/Goals: The appearances and goals in the World Cup 2014 qualifying games

Muller
2010 World Cup Golden Boot. Excellent attacking midfielder with a great goal record. Finds space with ease in Germany’s fluid attacking system. In a Group which they should have little trouble qualifying from and scoring a number of goals. Excellent attacking talent in the Germany team though may make it difficult to get Star Man awards.
Group G fixtures: Portugal Ghana USA
Hazard
Had a fantastic season for Chelsea. International record isn’t quite as good and has had some differences in the past with the Belgium National team. Showed what he can do with an excellent goal against Sweden in the latest friendly. Undoubtedly the star of the Belgium team which should help with Star Man awards in what is a good Group. Plays rather wide on the left which puts him a little away from the action.
Group H fixtures: Algeria Russia South Korea
Ribery
Currently an injury doubt which needs monitoring but one of the exceptional players in the France team with his work rate and pace. Should put him in the frame for Star Man awards
Group E fixtures: Honduras Switzerland Ecudor
Robben
Excellent performance in the friendly against Wales playing in a very advanced position in the 3-5-2. Incredible season for Bayern and has a great international record. Pace causes havoc for opposition.
Group B fixtures: Spain Australia Chile
Oscar
The only realistic Brazilian midfield option. Occupies a central position and does have the ability to get beyond the forwards to score goals. However, perhaps doesn’t play as far forward as he does for Chelsea due to the 3 forwards in the Brazil team. Has had an incredible workload over the last 2 years but did get enforced rest in the latter part of this premier league season when Mourinho preferred other midfielders for Chelsea. Good Group fixtures
Group A fixtures: Croatia Mexico Cameroon
Di Maria
A wide attacking midfielder has had an excellent season with Madrid and like Oscar is probably the only realistic attacking midfield option for Argentina. Good Group fixtures.
Group F fixtures: Bosnia Iran Nigeria
Vidal
Chile will be fighting it out with the Netherlands for qualifying in Group B and don’t have an easy schedule. However they do have a chance of qualifying have finished their qualfying Group strongly. The Chile team has grown from the 2007 World Youth Cup and is a real team together. They are also very attacking and will progress or go out of the Group scoring goals. Vidal is the powerhouse box to box midfielder. Just a warning he is coming back from injury and played 23 minutes in the recent friendly. His fitness needs monitoring.
Group B fixtures: Australia Spain Holland
James Rodriguez
The creative force in the Colombian midfield. May miss his Monaco team mate Falcao though as the target for his assists. An exceptionally talented player who in a good Group should have good Star Man potential. Was excellent in qualifying.
Group C fixtures: Greece Ivory Coast Japan
De Bruyne
A cheaper midfielder than Hazard and one that should play more centrally. Given that position he will have a major creative influence for Begium. Had an excellent qualifying campaign that was integral to Begiums successful qualification. May struggle with Hazard for Star Man awards but does have good Group fixtures and is excellent value.
Group H fixtures: Algeria Russia South Korea
Shaqiri
Star man for Switzerland who should qualify with France from Group E. Excellent passer and dribbler. Also should come to the finals fresh having not been a regular starter for Bayern.
Group E fixtures: Ecuador France Honduras
