Sun Dream Team World Cup tips – striker options for the quarter finals transfer window

The importance of knowing your priorities

I’ll repeat what I said here for the midfield options.  If you’ve read my article http://www.fantasyfootballgeek.co.uk/sun-dream-team-world-cup-transfers-quarter-final-transfer-window-strategy/  you’ll see that before you make your transfers you need to decide what your priorities are.  To have all 11 players playing to the final/3rd place playoff then you need to take a view on who will win the quarters as there are no further transfer windows in place.  There is 1 more transfer at a surprise time apparently but although I think that will come before the semi’s there’s no guarantee of that.  So if you’re behind and trying to win your mini league you may want to gamble and only pick players from the teams you think will win their quarter final ties.  If you are winning your league and don’t want to take that risk then you may want to hedge your bets and not gamble on picking the winners of each tie.  The James Rodriguez v Neymar selection is a classic example.  Do you sell Rodriguez gambling that Brazil will win and risk that if Brazil loses you have no Rodriguez and a Neymar who won’t play again in the competition?  Only you can decide how you want to play this but my article mentioned above does help your thought process.

Striker options table:

Here’s my table of the striker options.   I’ve tried to rank them in order by taking into account their WC form, their overall quality, the likelhood of them progressing to the semi’s and then the games thereafter.  However there’s enough data in the table for you to make your own decsion on who to transfer.  There’s a key at the bottom of the table plus some narrative behind each player.  There’s only 6 and I’ll explain why before the narrative on each player:

NameCountryClubWC GoalsAll Intnl Apps/GoalsWC Qualf App/GoalsClub 13/14 App/Goals/Assts
 Messi (£8.0m) Argentina Barcelona 4 84/37 14/10 46/41/15
 RVP (£6.0m) Holland Man Utd 3 82/41 9/11 28/18/4
 Neymar (£7.5m) Brazil Barcelona 4 47/30 N/A 41/15/15
 Benzema (£6.0m) France R Madrid 3 65/19 9/2 52/24/16
 Fred (£5.0m) Brazil Fluminese 1 32/16 N/A 16/6/1
 Higuain (£6.0m) Argentina Napoli 0 36/21 11/9 46/24/12

Key:

WC Goals:  World Cup goals scored in the Group stages

All Intl App/Goals:  The total number of International appearances and goals

WC Qualf App/Goals:  The appearances and goals in the World Cup 2014 qualifying games

Club 13/14  App/Goals/Assts:  The appearances, goals and assists for his club in the 2013/14  season including League, European and Cup games

Those not in the table

I’ve omitted a few people from the table for the following reasons:

Colombia – Guttierrez and Martinez.  I’m not sure whether one or both of these will start and if so who.  Add that to the risk of going out via Brazil means I’ve ommitted them

Belgium – Lukaku’s performance does add to the risk that Origi may not start, not that he did anything wrong.  Both playing well and the fact that they are unlikely to play 2 strikers means that I’ve ommitted them.  Oh and theyre also playing Argnetina

Costa Rica – I’ve ommitted Campbell as I can’t see Costa Rica progressing

Germany – Only striker is Klose who has no record of starting in this competition.

Messi

Has single handedly dragged his side through to the quarters.  I believe Argentina will progress given more space via a Belgium side that should attack.  Messi will dominate Star Man awards in games that Argentina compete.

RVP

Has an injury scare which needs monitoring as left training yesterday with his left thigh heavily taped up according to the Daily Mail.  The logical choice at the moment as you have to rate Holland as the best chance of going through. Good form so far.  Only negative is his quiet performance against Mexico where he was isolated without any service.  Mexico were the first side not to attack to any great degree and his performance suffered. That may also occur against Costa Rica.  However difficult to ignore given Holland have the best chance of progressing

Neymar

If Messi is the star for Argentina then that is amplified even more for Neymar who has been the only bright spark going forward for Brazil in my view.  Brazil have a tough game against Colombia but if they progress he is bound to star.  He has had some injury concerns so these need to be monitored but he’s stating that he’s fine

“I am able to play against Colombia. I have no pain. I feel very well in training and rest assured, I’m fine.”

Benzema

After the debacle that was him playing on the left against Nigeria I’m sure he will return to the centre.  Great form in the World Cup so far though.  Only question is whether France can progress against Germany.

Fred

Quite rightfully the butt of alot of criticism in this World Cup for lack of movement especially.  Personally I wouldn’t have him but if you’re looking to back Brazil to the hilt he’s an option. Better than Hulk who has potential to be replaced by Ramires

Higuain

Speaking of poor form, Higuain has hardly set the world alight in this World Cup.  However he does have quality, a good qualifying record and  a good season with Napoli behind him.  Surely he will also benefit if teams attack Argentina and give more space.

I hope this helps you with your decisions
