Sun Dream Team World Cup transfers – Defenders and GKs for the quarter finals transfer window

The importance of knowing your priorities

I’ll repeat what I said here for the midfield and striker options.  It’s not quite so drastic for defenders and goalkeepers as they have scored less than midfielders and strikers. However, if you’ve read my article http://www.fantasyfootballgeek.co.uk/sun-dream-team-world-cup-transfers-quarter-final-transfer-window-strategy/  you’ll see that before you make your transfers you need to decide what your priorities are.  To have all 11 players playing to the final/3rd place playoff then you need to take a view on who will win the quarters as there are no further transfer windows in place.  There is 1 more transfer at a surprise time apparently but although I think that will come before the semi’s there’s no guarantee of that.  So if you’re behind and trying to win your mini league you may want to gamble and only pick players from the teams you think will win their quarter final ties.  If you are winning your league and don’t want to take that risk then you may want to hedge your bets and not gamble on picking the winners of each tie.  The James Rodriguez v Neymar selection is a classic example.  Do you sell Rodriguez gambling that Brazil will win and risk that if Brazil loses you have no Rodriguez and a Neymar who won’t play again in the competition?  Only you can decide how you want to play this but my article mentioned above does help your thought process.

Striker options table:

Here’s my table of the defender and GK options.    I’ve done it in descending order of the best teams to go for.  The main priority I’ve looked at is a clean sheet in the quarters and progress through to the semi finals.  I’ve also tried to pick the best value defenders with gametime security.  This is as I don’t see the sense in over paying for attacking defenders given the short number of games to go.  There’s a key at the bottom of the table plus some narrative behind each player.

KEY

Best defender: Given the low scoring by defenders to date, I’ve picked the cheapest defender with gametime security

GK:  I’ve given the price of the GK for comparison

WC GCs:  The amount of goals conceded in the WC to date

WC CSs:  The amount of clean sheets in the WC Group stage

Team WC Qualifying games: The amount of qualifying games played

Team GC/CS: The amount of goals conceded (GC) the team conceded in qualifying and the amount of clean sheets (CS) obtainedin

Holland

Unquestionably the team with the easiest passage to the semi’s and the best immediate prospect of  a clean sheet.  De Vrij at £2.5m is the next best option to Blind.

Brazil

The much vaunted defence hasn’t performed by any stretch and in Colombia they have a difficult opponent next.  The loss of Gustavo through suspension certainly won’t help.  However if they can tame Rodriguez and perform something like their reputation then a clean sheet and progression is possible.  The other issue is the price.  Luiz is the cheapest at £5.0m

Argentina

With Roco suspended for this game the next best option is F Fernandez.  Tricky game agaisnt an attacking team first but their defence has shown form earlier in the competition even if it isn’t ther strength by a long chalk.  I wouldn’t double up as it gets very expensive after Fernandez and the suspended Rojo

Germany

Algeria really made the German defence look shaky so France could really scare them.  Difficult to see a clean sheet here and progression is also not going to be easy.

France

Have defended pretty well during the competition even if the opposition is questionable to say the least.  Sakho injured isn’t helpful on the price front thats for sure.  There’s no one cheap after Debuchy and Sakho.

Belgium

Teams have kept Argentina relatively quiet by parking the bus but Belgium dont have the personnell or the mindset to go down this road.  Expect a far more open game which will defeinitely lead to goals against for Belgium.

Colombia

They have performed well defensively but not conceding against Brazil is going to be a tall order.  Next would be Germany or France as well

Costa Rica

Despite the excellent defensive record at Group stage surely Holland is where it all has to end

Thats the positional players done.  Next I’ll show the transfers for my team
