Sun Dream Team World Cup transfers- quarter final transfer window strategy

Sun Dream Team

Here’s some thoughts on possible strategies for the next and last transfer window in the Sun Dream Team world cup format.  There is an additional 1 transfer that the Sun will give at some unamed time.  I suspect that the additional secret transfer will come before the semis but I’m not planning for it.

Sun Dream Team World Cup transfers- quarter final transfer window strategy

Below I’m going to show you one of my 2 teams and give you some ideas on possible transfer strategy for the transfer window prior to the quarter finals.  It’s the last transfer window although the Sun has promised 1 more transfer at some unknown time.  We are to be told by tweet or E mail apparently.  The Neymar injury is worth monitoring though as that may make it easier.  It seems he will be fit though from what I’ve heard.  Remember this is just get you thinking about your team rather than something to slavishly follow.  I’ll do an article on what transfers I make later in the week.

The problem

Unless you’ve already gambled on your semi finalists through the last transfer window, like me you’ll have players in your team who can’t go any further by virtue of the fact that they will be playing each other.  That means unless you plan ahead in some way you will end up with some players not taking part in the semi’s and in the final/3rd place playoff.  With double points in place thats a big issue to be navigated.  How you play it will depend on your priorties and where you are in your mini league if thats the priority.  For me I’m not fussed about the mini league overall ranking is my aim.  I want to avoid taking too much risk and seeing my ranking tumble rather than gamble everything to advance.  However if you’re behind in your mini league and your priority is to win it and you’re not fussed what your end position is then you may want to gamble everything to win that prize.  So using my team as a guide to illustrate the points here’s 3 options.  By the way the players inserted now aren’t necessarily my final picks.  I want to look at some stats first.

Unfortunately the Sun Don’t seem to have updated the ownership % which would have been an additional factor.

The games

So here are my thoughts on the likely winners of the games which will help shape our strategy

Holland v Costa Rica

This is the most nailed on fixture for me.  I think the Costa Rica dream will come to an end here.

Argentina v Belgium

With a little more room from a team that won’t park the bus I’m banking on Argentina winning here

Brazil v Colombia

Brazil haven’t played that well for me and don’t have Gustavo due to suspension.  Thats a big loss.  Colombia have played well.   However can Colombia rely on Rodriguez continually scoring for them and are the strikers good enough against the Brazil defence?  Alot of what I read and hear is confident about Brazil but I’m not so sure.

France v Germany

This is too close to call for me.

So we have 2 games that I’m confident about and 2 I’m not sure about.  You may have different views.

My team as is

Here’s how it looks against the quarters:

Holland (2 players) v Costa Rica (1 players)

Argentina (2 players)  v Belgium (0 players)

Brazil (2 players) v Colombia (2 players)

France (1 player) v Germany (1 player)

So everyone is playing.  Here’s some strategy options.  By the way, I know Rojo is suspended for the quarters but this is just an illustration of ideas rather than exact transfers.

1.  Gamble on picking 4 quarter final winners

Probably the most risky option but means you have the best team possible if you guess right.

If I was to pick 4 winners it would be Holland, Argentina, Brazil and Germany.

Here’s how a team could look after the following transfers:

Benzema to RVP, Rodriguez to Sneijder, Gamboa to De Vrij, and to make up the cash, Ospina to Navas of Costa Rica.  Sneijder is an injury risk and needs monitoring by the way.  It ended up with Holland players but there are other options.

Here’s how the team would look:

2.  Gamble on picking 2 winning teams

This is less risky in picking winners but has a major downside.   The 2 winning teams I pick are Holland and Argentina.  In order to have the maximum participation of players in your team for the future games you end up with picking  players in the Holland and Argentinian team that are not ideal.   However you only have 4 transfers so the concentration of transfers would  be on the midfielders and strikers as the big points scorers in my mind.  Argentina will have to play The Netherlands in the semi although there’s still the 3rd place playoff game to equalise the number of games.  This game may see player rotation but also should be more free scoring if there is less of a win at all costs attitude.

Here’s some transfers to acheive this

Muller to Di Maria, Rodriguez to Sneijder, Benzema to RVP, Neymar to Higuain.  See what I mean in sacrifice of quality for quantity!

3.  Accept that some players wont make it to the semis

This is where you don’t try and gamble on who will win but take a more pragmatic approach keeping the best players and accepting some won’t play in the semi’s and final

Here I would transfer out only Benzema to put in RVP as far as the attacking players are concerned.  Out of the attacking players you accept that one of Neymar or Rodriguez will definitely not go through.  However what you get though is that you dont  gamble that Brazil will go through and if they don’t end up with neither.  This ends up with me leaving the attacking teams pretty much as is and gambling in defence that Holland will at least keep a clean sheet against Costa Rica.  The 1 secret transfer if it comes before the semis could plug the 1 player attacking gap that this will definitely leave.

Here’s how the transfers would pan out and how the team would look:

Benzema to RVP, Gamboa to De Vrij, Luiz to Howedes and Ospina to Cillisen

I hope that gives you some ideas on how to proceed with your team.  I’ll now be reviewing the players again to help you choose.
